2. All performers must be students at the member school. A middle school/junior high may have 6th grade<br />
students, but they must be the minority.<br />
B. REGISTRATION<br />
1. The Jazz Ensemble festival is unclassified.<br />
2. A request to play before the scheduled time may be honored or refused by the director. No group will be<br />
required to play before its scheduled time.<br />
C. MUSIC<br />
1. Music: Free choice, but in contrasting styles. It is suggested that one piece be chosen from the Basic Music<br />
List.<br />
2. Scores for all numbers are optional. Compliance with the provisions of the current copyright laws is the<br />
responsibility of each participating school and its directors.<br />
D. PERFORMANCE RULES<br />
1. Each group will have 30 minutes of allotted time. This will include set up, entrance, performance, and exit.<br />
2. The judges will be instructed that no group is to be penalized for being stopped at the time limit provided the<br />
following conditions are met:<br />
a. All bands must play a minimum of three selections.<br />
b. The group must perform a sufficient amount of the selected numbers to allow for proper adjudication.<br />
3. The judges will be instructed not to penalize for lack of instrumentation, but to adjudicate the musical results of the<br />
group.<br />
4. A Jazz Ensemble may enter for "Comments Only". Such entrants will receive written comments from the<br />
adjudicators, but will not receive letter grades or a final rating.<br />
5. A request to play before the scheduled time may be honored or refused by the director. No group will be<br />

6. Each group will bring all instruments that it expects to use.<br />
7. Electronic instruments and amplifiers will be allowed.<br />
NOTE: The Sight Reading component of the State Jazz Ensemble Festival was eliminated and replaced with a clinic<br />
session by the membership at the 2010 Spring Meeting.<br />
E. WORKER POLICY<br />
In order to present a professional appearance, persons working in an official capacity representing<br />
MSBOA at public events (i.e. solo and ensemble festivals, band & orchestra festivals, honors bands, or<br />
other events that include members of the general public) should be considered “business-attire” events.<br />
Events which are MSBOA member specific may find more casual attire appropriate, however General<br />
Membership meetings should also be considered “business-attire” events. “Business-attire” is to be<br />
considered that which would be appropriate within the management level of the corporate workplace.<br />
