Letter from the President Nov/Dec 2007 Letter from the President John W. Schoenheit The Holiday Season is here again, and in this issue of The Sower we are focusing on holiday themes. The holidays can be a time of excitement and joy as we spend extra time with family and friends. However, it can also be a time of increased pressure and anxiety, because some families are more like enemies than friends, and spending time together is very challenging. Also, some people have no family, or none available, and for them the holidays can be a lonely time. There is also the extra time pressure we face as we decorate our houses, go to parties, shop for presents, and do extra baking and cooking. Many of us are already squeezed for time in our “normal” schedule, and now we have to figure out how to find even more time. Added to all that is the extra financial pressure that comes with the holiday season as we buy gifts and holiday outfits, and pay for extra travel. The holiday season is a time when we need to let the peace of God rule in our hearts. It is appropriate, then, that several of the articles and letters in this issue of The Sower focus on peace. There is also an article on Mary, the mother of Jesus, who would likely have had a mental breakdown by her late teens had she not had the peace of God living in her heart. While I am on the subject of Mary, let me say that this issue of The Sower contains the first article I have ever written about her, and I have been writing on biblical subjects for more than 30 years. Frankly, I was amazed at the wonderful things that are revealed in the Word of God about Mary, no doubt more than I have written. As I studied about her, first for my own benefit, then to write and teach about her, I became aware that my knowledge of Mary was more about what she was not than what she was. I knew she was not “a perpetual virgin,” not “assumed bodily” into heaven, and that she does not accept and answer prayers, but I had never taken the time to do more than some surface study of who she was. It was an honor and privilege to meet her in the pages of the Bible in a new and deeper way. On the subject of peace during the holidays, it is a good idea to plan ahead to handle the extra pressure, and make sure that your personal prayer and meditation time, your personal time with your family, and your personal time for reading the Bible are not squeezed out of your life. Too often it is those things that get eliminated when we need extra time, but in the end that never works out well. Without peace we damage our health, do not seem loving or Christ-like to those around us, and, instead of enjoying the wonderful holiday season, we look back at the blur it was with relief that it is over. This time of year let’s make up our minds and position our hearts to have a wonderful time—with God and His Son, with our friends and families, and with ourselves. Let us allow the peace of God to reign in our hearts, and then let us spread that peace, and the Gospel of Peace, to the world around us that so desperately needs it.
