Purpose<br />
People credited with this <strong>unit</strong> <strong>standard</strong> are able to support a<br />
person to move safely using LITE principles and evaluate the<br />
moving task; support a person to use assistive equipment; and<br />
store, and care for, moving and assistive equipment, in an aged<br />
care, health, or disability context.<br />

Explanatory notes<br />
1 In the context of this <strong>unit</strong> <strong>standard</strong>, support should aim to maintain, improve, or<br />
restore a person’s independence and/or interdependence; utilise the person’s<br />
existing strengths; and – where possible – utilise the resources of the local<br />
comm<strong>unit</strong>y.<br />

5 Definitions<br />
LITE refers to 'load, individual, task, environment' and is fully explained in The New<br />
Zealand Patient Handling Guidelines.<br />
Organisation’s policies and procedures are the policies and procedures of the<br />
employing organisation of the candidate and include ethical codes, <strong>standard</strong>s, and<br />
other organisational requirements.<br />
Person refers to a user of services in a health or disability setting in either a<br />
residential care facility or in a private home – the person’s own or a friend’s, group’s,<br />
or family member’s.<br />
Service plan is a generic term that covers the individual or group plans (which may<br />
also be referred to by other names) that are developed by service providers for<br />
people receiving support (and may include their family/whānau as appropriate).<br />
Outcomes and evidence requirements<br />
Outcome 1<br />
Support a person to move safely using LITE principles and evaluate the moving task in an<br />
aged care, health, or disability context.<br />
Range<br />
types of moving equipment may include but are not limited to – slide sheet,<br />
hoist, handling belt, transfer board, sling, walking frame, wheelchair;<br />
evidence is required for moving five different people using five different types of<br />
moving equipment.<br />
Evidence requirements<br />
1.1 The immediate environment for moving a person is prepared in accordance with<br />
LITE principles.<br />
1.2 Preparation for the moving task is in accordance with the person’s service plan.<br />
1.3 The moving task is explained to the person in accordance with LITE principles.<br />
1.4 Privacy, dignity, and respect for the person are maintained throughout the<br />
moving process.<br />

1.5 The person is supported to move in accordance with LITE principles.<br />
1.6 The moving task is evaluated in terms of the New Zealand Patient Handling<br />
Guidelines.<br />
1.7 Any issues identified in the evaluation are reported in accordance with the<br />
organisation's policies and procedures.<br />
Outcome 2<br />
Support a person to use assistive equipment in an aged care, health, or disability context.<br />
Range<br />
assistive equipment includes but is not limited to – shower and/or bath<br />
equipment, toileting aids;<br />
evidence is required for the use of three types of assistive equipment.<br />
Evidence requirements<br />
2.1 Assistive equipment is set up in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions<br />
and the organisation's policies and procedures.<br />
2.2 Assistive equipment is used with a person in accordance with the<br />
manufacturer's instructions, the organisation’s policies and procedures, and<br />
scope of own role.<br />
Outcome 3<br />
Store, and care for, moving and assistive equipment in an aged care, health, or disability<br />
context.<br />
Range types of moving and assistive equipment may include but are not limited to –<br />
slide sheet, hoist, handling belt, transfer board, sling, walking frame, wheelchair;<br />
shower and/or bath equipment, toileting aids;<br />
evidence is required for five different types of moving and assistive equipment.<br />
Evidence requirements<br />
3.1 Moving and assistive equipment is stored and cared for in accordance with the<br />
manufacturer’s instructions and the organisation's policies and procedures.<br />
3.2 Faults relating to moving and assistive equipment are reported in accordance<br />
with the organisation's policies and procedures.<br />

Please note<br />
Providers must be granted consent to assess against <strong>standard</strong>s (accredited) by <strong>NZQA</strong>, or<br />
an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can<br />
report credits from assessment against <strong>unit</strong> <strong>standard</strong>s or deliver courses of study leading<br />
to that assessment.<br />
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against <strong>standard</strong>s by<br />
<strong>NZQA</strong> before they can register credits from assessment against <strong>unit</strong> <strong>standard</strong>s.<br />
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and<br />
which are assessing against <strong>unit</strong> <strong>standard</strong>s must engage with the moderation system that<br />
applies to those <strong>standard</strong>s.<br />

<strong>standard</strong> are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The<br />
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations<br />
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for<br />
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.<br />
