People employed as support workers in an intellectual disability setting can have their skills<br />

and knowledge recognised by this Level 3 <strong>qualification</strong>, which can be tailored to the<br />

requirements of the workplace.<br />

Programme overview<br />

This <strong>qualification</strong> is designed for support workers in an intellectual disability<br />

setting. It provides the basic skills and knowledge required to provide<br />

quality care and support within their role. Core Competencies (Level 3) is a<br />

prerequisite for this <strong>qualification</strong>.<br />

Learning and assessment for this <strong>qualification</strong> occurs in the workplace.<br />

The <strong>qualification</strong> covers the following topics:<br />

the role of the support worker.<br />

causes of intellectual disability.<br />

changes to a person’s condition<br />

personal and community values.<br />

The intellectual disability <strong>qualification</strong> also allows workplaces or trainees to<br />

Pre-requisites<br />

People wanting to enrol in this <strong>qualification</strong>, must have completed the Core<br />

Competencies (Level 3) <strong>qualification</strong>.<br />

Enrolment requirements<br />

To enrol in Intellectual Disability (Level 3), the trainee must meet the<br />

following requirements:<br />

be employed as a support worker in a health, disability or aged<br />

support organisation.<br />

have completed the Core Competencies (Level 3) <strong>qualification</strong>.<br />

have one of the following residency statuses:<br />

o New Zealand citizen (including Cook Islands, Niue and<br />

Tokelau citizens)<br />

o New Zealand permanent resident<br />

o New Zealand work permit/work visa<br />

o Australian citizen<br />

o hold refugee status in New Zealand.<br />

Special notes<br />

Due to the health and safety requirements of working in community<br />

support roles, people undertaking this <strong>qualification</strong> are expected to have a<br />

current first aid certificate.<br />
