Discrepancies exist in recommendations from
different organizations regarding when to screen,
whom to treat, and how to treat. Using case-based
discussion, this presentation will review the health
benefits of vitamin D, the recommended daily
allowance, dietary and nondietary sources, and
the AAP’s position on which children to screen for
vitamin D deficiency, what cutoffs to use for treatment,
and how best to treat vitamin D deficiency.
F1072 Can You Navigate the Maze of
Maternal Medications and Breastfeeding
Convention Center, 10
Data have shown that pediatricians often recommend
erroneously or inappropriately that a mother
stop breastfeeding when she is taking certain
medications. They report being not up-to-date on
information about certain medications and their
compatibility with breastfeeding. Many pediatricians
remain unaware that the National Library of
Medicine offers a free, up-to-date, online internet
medication search service called LactMed, which
can be used to query any medication’s compatibility
with breastfeeding. This session will discuss
the new AAP policy statement, identify classes of
medications that are currently controversial (SSRIs,
alcohol, tobacco, narcotics, methadone, and galactogogues),
and provide resources for pediatricians.
