We are delighted that you have decided to undertake your undergraduate studi<strong>es</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong><br />

Salaam or are considering to do so. This <strong>Prospectus</strong> d<strong>es</strong>crib<strong>es</strong> the range <strong>of</strong> our cours<strong>es</strong> and will give you a<br />

flavour <strong>of</strong> life in our various campus<strong>es</strong>.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam is a unique community <strong>of</strong> students and staff dedicated to<br />

bringing out the b<strong>es</strong>t in all its members. Our aim is to provide the b<strong>es</strong>t possible environment for teaching,<br />

learning and r<strong>es</strong>earch, and our track record <strong>of</strong> succ<strong>es</strong>s is well known in East Africa, Africa and the r<strong>es</strong>t <strong>of</strong><br />

the world. We will continue to ensure that your years at this <strong>University</strong> will be filled with excitement and<br />

experienc<strong>es</strong> that you can treasure for a lifetime. We also recognize that the quality <strong>of</strong> student experienc<strong>es</strong><br />

deriv<strong>es</strong> from more than academic study. That is why the <strong>University</strong> encourag<strong>es</strong> students to join and actively<br />

participate in activiti<strong>es</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Students’ Union and use the various sports and recreational faciliti<strong>es</strong> available,<br />

e.g. swimming pool, cricket, athletics and soccer fields. The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam is also at the<br />

interface <strong>of</strong> national and international higher education innovations and initiativ<strong>es</strong>.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> has taken all reasonable steps to make sure that the information in this<br />

<strong>Prospectus</strong> about course content, structure, teaching faciliti<strong>es</strong> and staffing are accurate and up-to-date.<br />

Students are however warned that the demand for certain cours<strong>es</strong> and the availability <strong>of</strong> staff and r<strong>es</strong>ourc<strong>es</strong><br />

means that the <strong>University</strong> cannot guarantee that all cours<strong>es</strong> featured in this <strong>Prospectus</strong> will nec<strong>es</strong>sarily be<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered. Some cours<strong>es</strong> may have to be withdrawn, or combined with others, or their content changed as<br />

A: STUDENT ADMINISTRATION<br />

GENERAL INFORMATION<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> Student Administration, headed by the Dean <strong>of</strong> Students, deals primarily with the personal<br />

and social welfare aspects <strong>of</strong> the student’s life. The following faciliti<strong>es</strong> are provided by the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Dean <strong>of</strong><br />

Students: r<strong>es</strong>idence, gam<strong>es</strong> and sport, worship, student counselling in various problems and career guidance. The<br />

Dean <strong>of</strong> Students also assists the Deputy VC - (Administration) in student disciplinary matters.<br />

The <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam <strong>University</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Education (DUCE) and Mkwawa <strong>University</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Education<br />

(MUCE) have their own departments <strong>of</strong> Student Administration each headed by a r<strong>es</strong>pective Dean <strong>of</strong> Students<br />

R<strong>es</strong>idence<br />

A limited number <strong>of</strong> rooms in the halls <strong>of</strong> r<strong>es</strong>idence are available on application before the beginning <strong>of</strong> the<br />

academic year. Accommodation in the Halls is therefore not guaranteed for every student. Students are urged<br />

to find their own accommodation outside the Halls. At pr<strong>es</strong>ent there are eight Halls <strong>of</strong> R<strong>es</strong>idence: seven on the<br />

main campus and one each on the <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam <strong>University</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Education and Mkwawa <strong>University</strong><br />

College <strong>of</strong> Education campus<strong>es</strong>. There also r<strong>es</strong>idential plac<strong>es</strong> for Mlimani Main Campus and DUCE students<br />

at Kijitonyama and Ubungo Hostels whreas the Mabibo Hostel is used by students from the Mlimani Main<br />

Campus, DUCE and some other public universiti<strong>es</strong> and institutions <strong>of</strong> higher learning.<br />

Payment <strong>of</strong> rent is made to the <strong>University</strong> Students Accommodation Bureau (USAB) <strong>of</strong>fic<strong>es</strong> located near<br />

Hall V premis<strong>es</strong> and through the NBC Ltd. on campus. No student will be given a room in the Halls <strong>of</strong><br />

R<strong>es</strong>idence until s/he has paid the pr<strong>es</strong>cribed rent. Priority for on - campus accommodation will be given to<br />

students with disabiliti<strong>es</strong>, foreign students, and female students from up country.<br />

Student Activiti<strong>es</strong><br />

Most <strong>of</strong> the student activiti<strong>es</strong> are organized by DARUSO, the student union. The student organization is<br />

concerned with the students’ academic, political, social and recreational activiti<strong>es</strong>. Students are encouraged to<br />

form academic/pr<strong>of</strong><strong>es</strong>sional organizations.<br />

They are also encouraged to form and join social organizations that have been registered. New social and<br />

academic organizations are registered with the Dean <strong>of</strong> Students <strong>of</strong>fice. Some outstanding student organizations<br />

at pr<strong>es</strong>ent include <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam <strong>University</strong> Economic Association, <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam <strong>University</strong> Marketing<br />

Association, Accounting Association <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam, Geological Association <strong>of</strong> Students,<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam Law Society, <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam <strong>University</strong> Finance Association, International Relations<br />

Association,<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam Education Students Association, International Students Association,<br />

Uganda Students Association in Tanzania, <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam <strong>University</strong> Political Science Students Association<br />

(DUPSA), etc.<br />

Gam<strong>es</strong> and Sports<br />

The <strong>University</strong> main campus has some <strong>of</strong> the b<strong>es</strong>t sporting faciliti<strong>es</strong> in the country including an international<br />

size track field, a swimming pool, tennis courts, soccer pitch<strong>es</strong>, netball and basketball courts, hockey and<br />

cricket fields. However, most <strong>of</strong> th<strong>es</strong>e faciliti<strong>es</strong> require intensive rehabilitation. A gymnasium where badminton,<br />

squash and weight lifting can be held is in place. Students can therefore participate in athletics, swimming,<br />

lawn tennis, table tennis, soccer (football), basketball, netball, hockey, badminton, cricket, handball and boxing.<br />

<strong>University</strong> students, through their Student Sports Council, Tanzania <strong>University</strong> Sports Association (TUSA),<br />

can take part in sports and game competitions organized by various sports bodi<strong>es</strong>, such as the East, Central<br />

Catering<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers cafeteria servic<strong>es</strong> for all meals to students at subsidised rat<strong>es</strong>. The meals are paid for at<br />

the cafeteria counters. There are two cafeterias on the main campus which have the capacity to serve the<br />

pr<strong>es</strong>ent student population.<br />

B: MEDICAL SERVICES<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam owns and operat<strong>es</strong> a Health Centre which provid<strong>es</strong> medical and health care<br />

servic<strong>es</strong> mainly to <strong>University</strong> students, <strong>University</strong> staff members, staff famili<strong>es</strong> and to the general public. The<br />

Centre is located within the <strong>University</strong>’s maincampus. There is, however, a clinic at the Mabibo students’<br />

hostels and a dispensing room at the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Aquatic Scienc<strong>es</strong> and Technology - Kunduchi. The main<br />

campus clinic is on the right hand side as one walks along Sinza Road from the <strong>University</strong> Post Office. It is the<br />

near<strong>es</strong>t building to the swimming pool and play grounds <strong>es</strong>pecially handball and lawn tennis courts.<br />

Organization<br />

The Centre is headed by a Medical Officer In-Charge who is assisted by a health administrator, matron and<br />

heads <strong>of</strong> preventive, clinical and finance and administration sections.<br />

Service Provision<br />

The Centre operat<strong>es</strong> on a twenty-four hour basis. Outpatient servic<strong>es</strong> are <strong>of</strong>fered from 8.00 a.m to 8.00 p.m<br />

on weekdays and Saturdays. Outside th<strong>es</strong>e hours, and on Sunday and Public Holidays, only emergency cas<strong>es</strong><br />

are handled.<br />

There are two ward wings, for male and female patients, with a 24 bed capacity. Both medical and preventive<br />

health servic<strong>es</strong> are <strong>of</strong>fered at the <strong>University</strong>’s costs to undergraduate government sponsored students, while<br />

all private students are required to pay a medical capitation fee.<br />

Procedure<br />

All fr<strong>es</strong>h students are required to produce pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> their physical and mental fitn<strong>es</strong>s to undergo <strong>University</strong><br />

studi<strong>es</strong>. Students who report at the Center for treatment are required to produce identity cards. All cas<strong>es</strong><br />

which can not be managed at the Center, are normally referred to Mwananyamala Municipal Hospital or<br />

Muhimbili National Hospital.<br />

Treatment outside the Health Center must have prior permission <strong>of</strong> the Medical Officer In-Charge <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>University</strong> Health Center otherwise the <strong>University</strong> will not be r<strong>es</strong>ponsible in any way. Where a student<br />

falls sick/ill in the Hall <strong>of</strong> R<strong>es</strong>idence/Hostel and is not able to walk to the Health Center/Clinic, the right<br />

thing to do is to contact a Hall Manager/Warden for further action.<br />

Students who fall sick shortly before, or during examinations, are advised to immediately report to relevant<br />

authoriti<strong>es</strong> in their r<strong>es</strong>pective departments and then to the Health Center for treatment and further directiv<strong>es</strong>.<br />

Apart from the general outpatient clinic, there is also a student’s clinic. The clinic, in addition to the<br />

provision <strong>of</strong> clinical servic<strong>es</strong>, it also informs, educat<strong>es</strong>, communicat<strong>es</strong> and counsels students on reproductive<br />

health. This also includ<strong>es</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> family planning servic<strong>es</strong> and treatment <strong>of</strong> sexually transmitted infections<br />

(STIs). The clinic also <strong>of</strong>fers specialized back-up servic<strong>es</strong> to the <strong>University</strong> Youth Reproductive Health<br />

Programme. The Health Center also <strong>of</strong>fers eye and optical servic<strong>es</strong>.<br />

Malaria is an endemic disease in <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam. This <strong>University</strong> is not an exception. Malaria is, however,<br />

preventable and the following are some <strong>of</strong> the preventive measur<strong>es</strong>: to cover exposed skin <strong>es</strong>pecially in the evening,<br />

sleeping under a mosquito net (preferably a treated one) and early and complete treatment can make you safe<br />

from malaria.

HIV/AIDS is a threat to the liv<strong>es</strong> and welfare <strong>of</strong> Tanzanians. However, practising safe sex can prevent HIV<br />

transmission.<br />

Other conditions commonly noted among students are worm inf<strong>es</strong>tations, upper r<strong>es</strong>piratory tract infections,<br />

skin diseas<strong>es</strong> and diarrhoea diseas<strong>es</strong>.<br />

Personal hygiene and environment sanitation are among the key preventive strategi<strong>es</strong>. Also for a health<br />

body and mind, a balanced diet and physical exercis<strong>es</strong> are recommended. Further information on health<br />

matters can be obtained from the <strong>University</strong> Health Education Programme Offic<strong>es</strong> which are situated opposite<br />

the Microbiology Department and next to the Demography Training Unit. It go<strong>es</strong> without saying that ill<br />

health can impair on<strong>es</strong> academic performance. It tak<strong>es</strong> a health body and mind to excel in academics and<br />

achieve academic excellence.<br />

It is very important to note that servic<strong>es</strong> are provided to students during term time only. Treatment<br />

during vacations is the student’s own r<strong>es</strong>ponsibility. The <strong>University</strong> is not r<strong>es</strong>ponsible for refund <strong>of</strong> any<br />

medical costs incurred outside the Health Center. Refund is made only when the Medical Officer In-Charge<br />

has authorized treatment in other hospitals.<br />

C: THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> Salaam Library is an academic unit which is an integral part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> in<br />

pursuit <strong>of</strong> its mission, that is: teaching, r<strong>es</strong>earch and consultancy. The primary role <strong>of</strong> the Library is to<br />

provide information servic<strong>es</strong> to support teaching, learning and r<strong>es</strong>earch functions <strong>of</strong> the academic and<br />

r<strong>es</strong>earch community. The Library has three departments namely: Reader Servic<strong>es</strong>, Technical Servic<strong>es</strong> and<br />

R<strong>es</strong>earch and Special Collection. Each department is headed by an academic member <strong>of</strong> staff who is<br />

answerable to the Director <strong>of</strong> the Library. The Senior staff <strong>of</strong> the Library are involved in teaching, r<strong>es</strong>earch<br />

and provision <strong>of</strong> consultancy servic<strong>es</strong>.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Library is a national depository library and collects materials published in Tanzania and<br />

on Tanzania which are housed in the East Africana Section. Th<strong>es</strong>e include books, journals, r<strong>es</strong>earch reports,<br />

government and university publications. It also includ<strong>es</strong> materials on the former East African Community,<br />

the Liberation movement and SADC publications.<br />

The Collections<br />

The library has seven major sections: Arts and Social Scienc<strong>es</strong>, Law, Science and Engineering, Reference,<br />

East Africana and ICT. Th<strong>es</strong>e collections consist <strong>of</strong> books, journal and other materials in their r<strong>es</strong>pective<br />

subject areas, both in print and electronic. They are self-sustaining service units which provide specialized<br />

servic<strong>es</strong> to users undertaking r<strong>es</strong>earch and cours<strong>es</strong> in various subject areas. In addition, the Library has<br />

Information Studi<strong>es</strong> Programme, which is a training wing that conducts Masters and Ph D programm<strong>es</strong> in<br />

Library and Information Studi<strong>es</strong>.<br />

The library maintains a collection <strong>of</strong> about 600,000 volum<strong>es</strong> and 2,800 periodical titl<strong>es</strong> <strong>of</strong> which 146<br />

are current printed journals. It has a rich collection <strong>of</strong> manuscripts including the Cory papers, Arabic and<br />

Swahili manuscripts, micro-materials, maps and CD-ROMs. The Library also has acc<strong>es</strong>s to 18 full-text<br />

electronic journal databas<strong>es</strong>. It is also a member <strong>of</strong> the Database <strong>of</strong> African Th<strong>es</strong><strong>es</strong> and Dissertation<br />

network (DATAD).<br />

Information Servic<strong>es</strong><br />

The Library provid<strong>es</strong> both print and electronic information servic<strong>es</strong> to its users. The servic<strong>es</strong> provided<br />

include: Lending Servic<strong>es</strong>, Document Delivery, E-mail and Internet, Selective Dissemination <strong>of</strong> Information<br />

(SDI), Current Awaren<strong>es</strong>s Servic<strong>es</strong>, photocopying and photographic servic<strong>es</strong>. Being a national depository<br />

library and the larg<strong>es</strong>t collection <strong>of</strong> r<strong>es</strong>earch materials, its servic<strong>es</strong> are also extended to r<strong>es</strong>earchers and<br />

scholars both within and outside the country.
