Kyalami 11th July 2009 Page 2 Photo by Tanzi The sparse little, albeit enthusiastic, groups of spectators were lulled into a soft kind of expectatation of a mediocre race by a gathering of aging men in well dated machinery as the 20 or so Sports and GT Cars wound their tyrewarming weaving way around the famous and still surviving Kyalami racetrack at the July 8 th National Historic Day. In the distance and out of sight the rolling start changed the meandering gathering of the various marques into a powerful procession of mania into the first corner and like an unannounced and almighty brattle of thunder the cars re-emerged out of the old pit straight and into Sunset descending down on Clubhouse on their first lap at race speed surpriseshocking the spectators into rapt enthusiastic engagement with the stunning display of fantastic racing that played out before their very eyes. Spearheading the long train of delightfully turned out cars from various periods and differing marques was the powerful and extremely well sorted Cobra of Tony Martin. Spearheading the train of cars, but only by a micrometer measurement was Tony from the man who has not yet realised he has retired from professional racing; barreling into Sunset at a huge rate of knots were Tony and his tormenter, side by side, V8 versus V8, Ford versus the old enemy. The Tony Tormentor was so hell bend on passing the Cobra that he hung his big Chevvy half onto the grass on the outside of Sunset as he aimed for the same spot of the rapidly approaching Clubhouse corner as Tony. As if this was not spectacular enough, he then proceeded to slow down his massive Camaro by some impossible miracle as the car snaked from side to side and Continued on page 4
