Altherm ® Materials for the Primary Aluminum Industry
Von Roll has developed new specific Altherm ® references for electrical and
thermal insulation of different potentials around beams, busbars, crust breakers,
superstructure, cell cathodes, by-pass systems, claustra walls and
structural poasts.
The increase in amperage up to high levels of 600 KAMPS generates higher
temperatures on equipment and masonry construction and therefore new
safety measures are necessary.
Due to its proximity to aluminum primary industry technology providers, EPCs
and users for over 30 years in the field, Von Roll offers the right product range
to meet all standard and custom technical protection requirements.
Properties of Altherm ® materials
» High temperature resistance
» Excellent electrical properties, high dielectric strength, breakdown voltage,
especially for high amperage and ambient voltage
» High mechanical properties especially flexural strength, compressive
strength and shear strength
» High chemical attack resistance to gases and particles, AlF 3

Altherm ® products are based on different types of reinforcement and specific
high-temperature and dielectric strength resin systems. More than 15 references
are available, and each meets a specific application.
Forms of delivery
Altherm ® materials are supplied as prepregs or rigid materials, sheets, tubes or
machined parts.
» Altherm ® prepregs: Altherm ® 660, Altherm ® 650
Structure based on glass roving or mica reinforcement with special coating
to withstand very high temperatures
» Altherm ® sheets / tubes: Altherm ® 500, Altherm ® 520, Altherm ® 530
Composite material composed of glass cloth, glass roving or mica reinforcement
with especially formulated resin systems based on high electrical
properties and thermal resistance.
» Altherm ® machined parts.
All Altherm ® references are machined in Von Roll workshops according to
the customer’s design, and offer optimized properties:
· specific tolerances
· professional machining and large-volume capacity
· high quality control level
Innovation and testing
At Von Roll laboratories materials can be tested according to IEC, UL and
other specifications: thermal, electrical and mechanical aging tests, Tan δ
measurements at different temperatures, partial discharge measurements with
different voltage ranges, specific material testing for semi-finished and final
parts
