Properties
DERAKANE 510N epoxy vinyl ester resin is a brominated novolac epoxy-based
vinyl ester, designed to combine outstanding corrosion and high temperature
resistance with excellent fire retardance (1) . This resin combines the novolac
backbone typical of a DERAKANE 470 series resins – to provide excellent
corrosion protection and high temperature performance – with a brominated
epoxy resin backbone to provide both toughness and reduced flammability. It is
used extensively in FRP ductwork, stacks, stack liner applications, handling
mixtures of air and hot gases or potentially flammable and corrosive liquids.
(1) The fire retardancy and flame spread data were obtained from controlled and/or smallscale
bench tests and the results apply specifically to the specimens tested, in the
manner tested. They are not necessarily predictive of product performance in a real fire
situation. DERAKANE resins are organic materials and the fabricated products
constructed from them will burn under the right conditions of heat and oxygen supply.
This numerical flame spread rating is not intended to reflect hazards presented by this or
any other material under actual fire conditions.
(3) Unopened drum with no additives, promoters, accelerators, etc. added. Shelf life
specified from date of manufacture.
Applications and
Fabrication
Techniques
Benefits
• The preferred choice where fire retardance combined with heat resistance and / or
corrosion resistance is required.
• Used extensively in FRP ductwork, stacks and stack liner applications, equipment
specified to handle mixtures of air and hot gases or potentially flammable and
corrosive liquids, and floorings compounds where a high degree of heat and / or
fire resistance is needed.
• Recommended for most FRP fabrication processes: filament winding, hand layup,
spray-up, pultrusion and resin transfer molding techniques.
• Laminates can meet ASTM E84 Flame Spread Rating Class 2 without additives.
The addition of 3% Antimony Oxide (Sb 2 O 3 ) to the resin allows the manufacture of
laminates that can meet ASTM E84 Flame Spread Rating Class 1.
• DERAKANE 510N is the most resistant resin in the DERAKANE resin portfolio
against wet or dry chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide, bleach, and hot, wet flue gas
environments. And generally it exhibits a corrosion resistance similar or close to
the corrosion resistance of DERAKANE 470 Resins.
• Retains strength and toughness at elevated temperatures which enables users to
operate the equipment in a variety of applications.
