Gedling Borough Towns and Villages
Arnold
Arnold is the administrative and
retail centre of the borough.
The earliest written record of
the town can be found in the
Domesday Survey of 1086
where Arnold was referred
to as ‘Ernehale’ – a place
frequented by eagles. The
eagle has remained a symbol
for the town and you will still
find many unexpected
references to this past, in,
for example, architectural
features and local publications.
A church has stood on the
site of St Mary’s for over 1,000
years. The current building dates
back to the 14th century,
reminding visitors of the town’s
long history.
The busy High Street and Front
Street offer a wide range
of shopping facilities to
complement Arnold’s thriving
market, which trades on
Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays
and a flea market on
Wednesday evenings. The
town centre is well serviced by
public transport from other parts
of the borough and beyond.
There are two leisure centres in
Arnold. Redhill Leisure Centre
has a fitness suite, an allweather
pitch and a sports hall.
Arnold Leisure Centre, which
is located in the town centre,
has a swimming pool and is
connected to the town’s library.
The town is also home to the
popular Bonington Theatre. The
