of the park, was a long-term
project for the Beauclerk family
and was finally completed in
1865. The building is now the
Bestwood Lodge Hotel.

Burton Joyce
Burton Joyce is a pleasant
residential parish popular with
commuters to Nottingham. The
church of St. Helen was built
in the 13th century and is the
resting place of the medieval
knight and former Sheriff of
Nottingham, Robert de Jortz.
It is from the de Jortz family
that the name Joyce is derived.
The village also offers good
leisure facilities, developed by
the Parish Council.

Calverton Village
Calverton
The former coal-mining parish
of Calverton was once an
important centre for the hosiery
industry. Calverton was home to
the Reverend William Lee, who
in 1598 invented the stocking
frame that revolutionised
manufacturing in the area.
Today the Calverton Folk
Museum on Main Street is
dedicated to the memory of
the invention and to the history
of the village. The museum is
run by volunteers and is open
on request.
North of the village stands a
memorial to three Polish airmen,
who were killed on their return
from an operational bombing raid
