2002 Sees a Specialist Childcare Worker Join the Community Settlement Team In 2002, the Irish Youth Foundation provided a two year grant to enable Focus Ireland to recruit a Childcare Worker to join the Community Settlement Team. The team had been seeking this service for a number of years to enable them to provide specialised help for children who were having difficultly adjusting following a period of homelessness. The services of the new team member are vitally important to these children. She has found that she needs to help with practical issues such as physical care, hygiene and nutrition, but equally importantly, she works to to address the deeper scars that can have resulted from the child’s experience of homelessness, such as loss of self esteem, behavioural difficulties and insecurity. Children are helped adjust to new schools and the potential hazards, such as bullying, this may involve, and where necessary she refers them to specialist areas such as bereavement counselling, post-traumatic stress counselling and family therapy. JERRY’S STORY Jerry, his little brother, and their mum and dad had been homeless for some time before obtaining a house in the Focus Ireland Alyward Green Housing Project, Finglas. When the family moved to a local authority house, it became apparent that Jerry was spending a lot of time out of school. His mother was pregnant and very unwell and his father works outside the home. The Childcare Settlement Worker addressed this with the family in an understanding, supportive way. A meeting was arranged with the school principal, school liaison officer, and class teacher. It transpired that Jerry was anxious about school, and his parents found it easier not to push him. The school had no idea of their past difficulties and instability. The outcome of bringing everyone together was that the school gained an understanding of the family situation and was able to suggest ways of dealing with some of the issues. The parents felt that the school was being supportive and agreed to work together with them. Jerry is doing much better at school. Names have been changed in this case study. 41
