Tuesday, May 8, 2012 – 5:30 p.m.
PRESENT:

I. CALL TO ORDER – PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
A regular meeting of the Board of Directors of Evergreen Public Schools was held on
Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the district’s Administrative Service Center, 13501 NE 28 th Street,
Vancouver, Washington. Joan Skelton, Board President, called the meeting to order at 5:30
p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
II.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A. Tuesday, April 24, 2012, Regular Board of Directors’ Meeting
B. Saturday, April 28, 2012, Special Board of Directors’ Meeting
Director Parsons moved, seconded by Vice President Yuzuriha, to approve the minutes as
presented. The motion carried unanimously.
III.
SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS
A. President Skelton asked students from Heritage High School’s Teacher Academy class,
who were present in the audience, to introduce themselves and indicate at which
schools they were doing their internships. The students, who are planning to become
teachers in the future, were accompanied by their teacher, Mary Thompson.
B. Tom Nadal, Executive Director, Elementary Education: 2012 Community Partner Award
from Educational Opportunities for Children and Families (EOCF)
Superintendent Deeder announced that Tom Nadal, Evergreen’s Executive Director of
Elementary Education, was recently honored as the 2012 Community Partner of the
Year by the Educational Opportunities for Children and Families (EOCF) for his work in
advancing Early Childhood Education. Mr. Deeder cited just one example of how Mr.
Nadal, working with Sue Steinbrenner, Evergreen’s Director of Facilities, has created
classroom space for Early Childhood Education programs.
Mr. Nadal stated that the partnership with EOCF goes both ways. He commended the
work of Ms. Steinbrenner and of Gaelynn Mills, Evergreen’s Coordinator of the Early
Childhood Center, for their work in sustaining that partnership. Board members
congratulated Mr. Nadal for being named 2012 Community Partner of the Year.

C. Zoe Bourgo, student at York Elementary School
Laura Truitt, fourth-grade teacher at York Elementary School, introduced Zoe Bourgo, a
10-year-old student in her classroom, who recently had her poem Candy Rovers
published in the on-line journal 4 and 20 Poetry. Ms. Truitt noted that the publisher had
no idea the poem was written by a child and, therefore, it had been accepted on its own
merits. Zoe Bourgo read the poem to the Board:
“Candy Rovers
They come back and forth with
candy swords and gumdrop guns.
These are the pirates I knew.”
Zoe shared how the poem evolved into its final version and described the edits she
made along the way. She and her teacher explained that the 4 and 20 Poetry Journal
accepts poems of no more than four lines with a maximum of 20 words. When asked
by a Board member how being published makes her feel, Zoe indicated that it’s been
exciting and fun.
D. National School Nurse Day (May 9)
Cindy Christensen, Director of Special Services, stated that School Nurses face more
significant health issues in schools than in the past. She noted, also, the important role
the nurses play in educating students to be healthy and, therefore, to stay in class. Ms.
Christensen introduced Renee Redman, Evergreen’s Nurse Coordinator. Ms. Redman
stated that the district employs 19 nurses, either full or part time, and it is their job to
meld nursing services within the educational program and to understand the link
between health and learning. Ms. Redman introduced Donna Burr and Heather Petrik
who were in attendance this evening representing all of the district’s nurses. Both
expressed their love for the jobs they have. Director Parsons read a proclamation
declaring Wednesday, May 9, 2012, as National School Nurse Day. Ms. Skelton
commented that the proclamation states clearly the vital role of the School Nurse. Mr.
Parsons, on behalf of the School Board, presented the signed proclamation to Ms.
Redman and asked her to share it with all of the School Nurses.
E. Teacher Appreciation Week (May 7-11)
Superintendent Deeder introduced three members of the Evergreen Education
Association (EEA) leadership present this evening: Gloria Smith, EEA President; Rob
Miller, EEA Vice President; and Bob Kenck, Middle School Representative to the EEA
Executive Board. President Skelton stated that Evergreen’s teachers are invaluable to
the district and its students. Ms. Smith commented that each person present this
evening likely can remember at least one teacher that had a significant impact on their
life. Ms. Skelton noted that teachers are called upon to do so much more than in the
past and that the words of the proclamation reflect that. She asked Director Bocanegra

to read the proclamation declaring the week of May 7 – 11, 2012, as Teacher
Appreciation Week. Board members reiterated their appreciation to all of Evergreen’s
teachers. Superintendent Deeder stated his appreciation for the ability of the district
and the EEA to resolve problems by always keeping in mind the best interests of the
students. Ms. Bocanegra, on behalf of the Board, presented the proclamation to Gloria
Smith.

V. PROPOSAL FOR ACTION
A. Resolution 5378 – Approval of Revision to Board of Directors’ Regular Meeting Calendar
for 2012
Ms. Skelton noted that two members of the Board of Directors will not be in the district
on Tuesday, June 19, which is a regular Board meeting day. Rather than risk a
situation where an additional Board member would be absent and a quorum would not
be met, she stated that the meeting date will be changed, via the Board’s approval of
Resolution 5378, to Tuesday, June 5, 2012. No further comments were received from
Board members or by members of the audience regarding this proposed date change.
Ms. Bradford moved, seconded by Mr. Yuzuriha, to approve Resolution 5378. The
motion carried unanimously. Ms. Skelton confirmed that notice of this change will be
publicized on the district’s website and communicated to the press.
VI.
SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
Superintendent Deeder reported as follows:
The Superintendent’s Award Ceremony for the District Art Show will be held at 7:00
p.m. Monday, May 21, at the Cascade Park Library.
The next Principal-for-a-Day event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23, from 9:00 a.m.
to 1:00 p.m. The principals for a day include:
Jack Burkman – Vancouver City Council
Jim Mains – Vancouver Farmers Market
Diane McWithey – Executive Director of SHARE
John McDonagh – Vancouver Business Journal
Chad Sessions – Real Life Real Estate
Each of these individuals will be assigned to one of the following schools: Union High
School, Shahala Middle School, Harmony Elementary School, Illahee Elementary School,
or Columbia Valley Elementary School. A debrief session and luncheon will take place at
Union High School at 11:30 a.m.
The Evening of Excellence, an event to recognize student academic achievements, will
be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Evergreen High School. Scott Keeney,
nLIGHT President and CEO, will be the keynote speaker.
The Children’s Culture Parade will be held on Friday, June 1, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at
the Vancouver Historic Reserve (parking at Pearson Air Museum).

X. RECESS
The regular meeting was recessed at 6:00 p.m. for the signing of documents. Ms. Skelton
stated that the Board would meet in a workshop session in the Green Complex Conference
Room beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. She reviewed the topics to be discussed at the
workshop and commented that members of the audience are always welcome to attend.
She noted that the workshop would be followed by a closed executive session regarding
personnel.

BOARD WORKSHOP
The Board met in its workshop from 6:27 until 7:38 p.m.
A. Special Services Update
Cynthia Christensen, Director of Special Services, presented an update and answered
questions from the School Board regarding Special Services and the Special Services
Department.
B. Budget Update
Superintendent Deeder and Mike Merlino, Chief Operating Officer, presented information
related to the district’s budget.
C. Superintendent’s Update
No update was presented by the Superintendent.
