M We had a most successful and enjoyable coffee morning at Holdfast Cottage and raised the magnificent sum of £821 for St. Paul’s Church. Lots of people came in spite of the chilly weather. The cake, white elephant, plant and jewellery stalls and the raffles all did well and the children enjoyed their special activities. We are most grateful to all those who helped in so many ways and give our special thanks to our hosts, Sue and Mike Wooldridge. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORTS & NEWS BRIGSTEER WI Members were given a presentation on the excellent work of the Great North Air Ambulance service. It is particularly important in rural areas as they take doctors directly where needed, many of whom are military personnel on leave. The charity is totally self funded and now owns three helicopters covering an area from just north of Preston to the Scottish border and across to the North East. We are busy planning for the Open Garden Weekend on 26th and 27th May, where lots of cakes and help are needed. Our June meeting will be a trip to Leighton Hall, for a guided tour of the house, gardens and birds of prey on 26th June. We are also hoping to organise another theatre trip later in the summer. CARTMEL FELL W.I. At the May meeting, members discussed the resolution to be put to the national AGM at Cardiff that everything should be done to prevent the decline of our high streets and town centres. On June 12th, at 7.30pm, (note date, please) in Cartmel Fell Parish Hall, Keith Pitman will be speaking on the work of Kendal Mountain Search and Rescue. All are welcome at meetings. CROSTHWAITE Sarah Rashleigh thanked members for their support on Damson Day by providing cakes and staffing the Stall. She welcomed the speaker Abigail Saxon, who had worked for the B.B.C. and gave a very interesting talk on her experiences as a producer, including an interview with Mrs Thatcher. UNDERBARROW WI Barbara Lee presided over the discussions on the WI resolutions regarding the decline of the High Street and the new WI Constitution The venue for the annual outing on 10 th July will be the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes. Hilary Crowe’s next walk will be on 24th June. The speaker for the evening, Karen Evans, outlined the history of the Citizens Advice Bureau from its earliest days during the London Blitz. Today, the service is still being provided throughout the country by volunteers ,with funding provided by each Local Authority. The CAB is to launch a new telephone helpline aimed at those in rural communities who are not currently able to access the services. The next WI meeting will take place on 12 th June at 7.30 pm when a raffle will be held in aid of Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) and the speaker will be Mr James Walling who will talk about his life as a bus driver. WITHERLACK W.I. The Resolutions Meeting was chaired by President Ann Walshaw. The changes to the Constitution and the Resolution on high streets were accepted by members. The Group Meeting at Crook and the “Ladies in Beef Day” at Ulverston were both greatly enjoyed. Tilly van Rees gave a report on the Half Yearly Council Meeting - with jokes. This summer a guided walk round Troutbeck with Andy Lowe on July 2nd and a visit to Holehird Gardens and Rydal Hall on August 15th are planned. To round off the evening members told where they were on their 21st birthday and what they were doing. It was quite surprising to find how many 15 were already married by then.
