A challenge Bosun Virgilio Jr. A. Laurea Since the editor of our company newsletter “THE BRIDGE” encouraged all RHL crew to participate, I have decided to write and share my article entitled “A Challenge“. I will always remember what my late father told us when we were young: “We don’t have wealth and property to lean on, I can only give you a good education”. Both my parents were teachers by profession, both of them principals, yet their earnings were not enough to feed and support our family. But God gave us the opportunity to finish our studies through hard work and dedication. I am the oldest of five children and presently on board M/V Barmbek, an Ice Class vessel, as Bosun. I have two brothers: Norman, a Radio Operator by profession, but now a Chief Cook on container and tank ships, and Ferdinand, also a Bosun on a container vessel. I have two lovely sisters named Sharon, a computer engineer, presently working in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), and Mary Michelle, a teacher, presently working in a government school and in line to be a principal soon. I got married in 2001, to Hyacinth Zulla Afuente, a teacher, specialised in a special arts’ programme. My loving and caring wife and I are blessed with two kids, Rhett, a grade five student in a special science class, and Kirsten Audrey, a lovely and jolly 3-year-old girl. After I graduated from college, I had to find a job in order to help my parents support my younger brothers and sisters. I worked as a Sales Clerk in an appliance store (SM Mall), and for Dumlao Oro Solida Engravers and Jewellers, where I became the sales and marketing manager. Yet after a few years, I decided to pursue a career in seafaring, and got a chance to work on a passenger ship, as Cadet/Ordinary Seaman (Local Trade). Later, I could work on a Log/Bulk/ General Cargo and Container Vessel. First, it was hard for me to adapt to the new challenge, since I had been used to working in an office, doing paperwork and conducting sales talks with our customers. But life must go on, and I had to face the reality THE BRIDGE I No. 16 staff on board that a seafarer’s job is not easy. As a Bosun, I must be tough; I am my deck crew’s superior. I realise that my performance does not depend on my superiors, but on myself. I lead my deck crew by initiative and personal example in seamanship knowledge, as well as a seaman’s spirit. I plan my crew’s activities, and help carry them out to the best of my ability. I do my best to make proper use of the workforce, equipment, property and stores at my disposal. As a Bosun, I train my deck crew to improve their knowledge and skills by allowing them to show their abilities, in order for them to qualify for the next higher rank of competency and the re-lated requirements. I try to act as an example by wearing proper protective clothing and promoting safe habits as well as professional and personal cleanliness, and I urge them to do the same. I encourage my crew to participate in all safety meetings and drills and to follow the company rules and regulations. It is my mission to lead my subordinates, to motivate and take care of them and to be an example in the areas of discipline, honour, hard work, sobriety, cooperation and respect towards officers and co-workers. I try to do my best to uphold the dignity and image of my fellow seamen, my company and my country. Thank you very much for allowing me to be a part of your prestigious newsletter “The Bridge“. cruise column Guest on M/V RHL Agilitas Elitza Dobreva and Plamen Petrov Dear Editors, On 15 th May 2012, in the port of Le Havre (France), we had a visitor on board – my girlfriend and fiancée Miss Elitza Nikolaeva Dobreva. After her visit, she and I would like to say some words of thanks for the opportunity to see each other which we were given. She says: “I was delighted to be able to visit RHL Agilitas. I noticed that the ship was very well maintained and clean. The bridge was a really interesting place for me because I have never been onboard such a large ship For a very long time I had been dreaming to see what exactly my husband does there, beyond the horizon, far from my sight. And when I heard that I could join him, I of course agreed immediately. After a few short preparations and some formalities, I boarded the air plane to Hong Kong. This name I had heard many, many times from my husband, and the city itself seemed to be familiar to me – like it was just next to the Ukraine! But in fact I had to fly many hours to reach it. I was feeling excited. And my excitement did not leave me until I came back to the Ukraine after one month’s journey; a round-the-world trip with my beloved one! Hong Kong appeared to be very crowded. I spent two days there waiting for the ship, and I liked it. Even though it was hot, humid and rainy all the time – I still liked it! I saw the city from the top of skyscrapers in the night, and I will never forget it. It was just beautiful. before. The second officer's cabin was comfortable and nice. It seemed really big! The staff was very pleasant and welcoming. I am very happy that I saw my boyfriend, and After two days in Hong Kong, I finally joined the vessel. The agent took me there, and when I got out of the car next to the ship, I could not believe my eyes – RHL Conscientia was so huge! At the gangway, I finally met my husband, the vessel’s Chief Officer. So many impressions at the same time. So many good feelings. How can I describe everything?! The ship was very busy at that time, taking supplies, stores and bunkers (as I understand now), so my husband spent only a few minutes with me before he was gone again for work, leaving me in his cabin, alone THE BRIDGE I No. 16 I am really grateful to all those who authorized my visit on board!” I say: “I would like to thank RHL for this great opportunity to see my girlfriend on board. Being away from the people you love is always though, and not everyone can do it. Luckily, she is right beside me in all my challenges, and never misses the chance to support me when most needed. As soon as I told her that there was a possibility of seeing each other, she took it without doubt or regrets. Thanks to you, we both were able to breath some “fresh air” in the middle of my contract. I hope in future more crew members will be as lucky as I was! After some time on board I met all the crew members, the officers and the Captain. They were very friendly to me, which helped me get used to my new environment. After leaving Hong Kong, the vessel sailed to Busan, Korea, where the ship was finally loaded for its transpacific passage. The Pacific Ocean. What did I know about it? Almost nothing ... Now I know that it is an endless mass of blue water, inhabited with flying fish, dolphins and whales. These are the creatures we met underway from Busan to Manzanillo, Mexico. We sailed for two weeks through the ocean. During that time, I learned all about life on board the ship. My husband and the other officers were busy at work. Everybody was doing their jobs on Deck, in the Engine room and on the Bridge. And in the evening, the officers gathered in the Officers’ Recreation Room to play cards or watch a movie together, or just to have a little talk.
