FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT RELAY FOR LIFE
ONE OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS IS HAVING TROUBLE RAISING THE $200 MINIMUM.
WHAT DO WE DO
If a team member is having trouble raising funds, help them out! Get together, have a bake sale
or other fundraising event, make it a team effort. Remember, the money you raise helps fund
cancer research and allows the Society to offer valuable programs and services for patients.
SOME TEAM MEMBERS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT WALKING THROUGHOUT THE
NIGHT. ANY SUGGESTIONS
Encourage everyone to participate. Enter into the fun of walking in pairs and having a good visit
while you walk. It’s a safe and social environment – no one will want to miss the magic of walking
around a candle-lit track with other team members. You can always stop for a drink or a
breather, or even catch a few winks when someone else is doing laps.
DO WE HAVE TO CAMP OUT
Camping out is strongly encouraged for all team members. You feel part of the whole effort when
you have a site in the tent city, and you feel the powerful emotions of support and
encouragement when you see how much your presence means to a cancer survivor.
I CAN NO LONGER ATTEND MY RELAY FOR LIFE. CAN MY REGISTRATION FEE BE
REFUNDED OR TRANSFERRED TO SOMEONE ELSE IN MY PLACE
Sorry, we do not refund registration fees, and we are not able transfer fees paid to register
yourself to another person. We can, however, convert your registration fee to a donation. Please
call your local Canadian Cancer Society office to make a request.
I CANNOT ATTEND THE EVENT NIGHT. DO I NEED TO REMOVE MYSELF FROM MY
TEAM
We prefer to see all registered participants walking the track in support of Relay. However if you
cannot attend the event, you are more than welcome to register and help your team fundraise.
Please remember to turn all funds you’ve raised into your team captain prior to the event night.
WHY SHOULD MY TEAM HAVE 12~15 MEMBERS
Having more people on your team makes it easier for your team to represent itself at the Relay
For Life, as at least one person from your team should be on the track at all times. Smaller teams
are still welcome to join as we don’t want to exclude anyone from our Relay For Life.

IF MY TEAM HAS MORE THAN 15 MEMBERS, WHY MIGHT WE BE ASKED TO SPLIT
INTO 2 TEAMS
We want to offer your team the benefit of having multiple teams, which includes:
1. Being guaranteed that each team will be assigned its own campsite giving all participants
more room at Relay. If requested, we will make every effort to assign campsites adjacent
to each other.
2. Increased motivation to fundraise, if encouraged to raise more than your sister team.
3. Ability for each team to join our FUNdraising Club.
CAN SOMEONE NOT REGISTERED COME WATCH
You can drop by anytime to make a donation or just to watch and enjoy the spirit of the event.
WHEN WILL THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY SEND OUT TAX RECEIPTS FOR
RELAY DONATIONS
Donors who've pledged online will receive electronic tax receipts by e-mail within minutes of
making their donation. Offline donation tax receipts are sent out as soon as possible after the
event, with the intent of having all receipts out by the end of the calendar year.
CAN I GET A TAX RECEIPT FOR MY LUMINARY PURCHASE
No. When you buy a luminary, you are purchasing a product and are therefore not eligible for a
tax receipt under Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.
DO I HAVE TO COLLECT THE DONATIONS FROM THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE AGREED
TO PLEDGE ME
Yes. You should ask your pledgers to give you their generous donation at the same time they
pledge you — except for online pledges — which are paid by credit card immediately during the
online pledging process.
