The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is led by local
volunteers in each community and we are looking for people
to join our Leadership Committee. If you would like to join the
fight against cancer, consider donating your time and skills to
this great cause.

Butt out when you buckle up
Beginning with their first trip home from the hospital, the law
requires that Alberta children be safely strapped into car seats
while on the road. Everybody’s safe and sound, right
Except there is nothing preventing anyone in the vehicle
from lighting up and exposing children to all the deadly
chemicals in second-hand smoke.
That’s why the Canadian Cancer Society is calling on the
Alberta government to pass provincial legislation making it
illegal for drivers to smoke in vehicles carrying children under
the age of 18. Second-hand smoke is particularly dangerous for
children because they absorb more of the harmful chemicals
found in tobacco smoke compared to adults due to their
developing lungs, higher breathing rate, and less-developed
immune systems.
World health authorities agree that children suffer a wide
range of health effects from such exposure, including
pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, and ear infections. A
recent study undertaken by the World Health Organization
concluded that second-hand smoke kills more than 600,000
people every year worldwide, and of those, 165,000 are
children under the age of five.
Alberta is lagging behind its neighbours across the country
with its lack of legislation on this issue. Ask your MLA to push
for legislation that bans smoking in vehicles carrying children.

Why do you Relay
A great way to promote Relay For Life in Red
Deer is to get your story published in your
community, school or club newspaper or
newsletter, or by submitting a posting to a
website or blog. Share with your community
why you Relay! Here is an example to help get
you started:
The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is a
12-hour, overnight, non-competitive, team-based
event in which participants take turns walking
around the track. The event opens with the
Survivors’ Victory Lap, an inspirational lap for
people who have survived cancer. At dusk,
luminaries are lit in honour of loved ones touched
by cancer and provide inspiration to participants
all night long. Relay raised $277,408 in our
community in 2010.
I Relay in memory of my grandmother who lost
her battle to breast cancer in 2007 and in honour
of my mom who is a breast cancer survivor and
has now been cancer-free for one year. I chose to
fight back in their names and in the hopes that we
will defeat this awful disease.
Funds raised through Relay For Life make a
difference, helping the Canadian Cancer Society
fund the most promising research projects,
information services and support programs in the
community, and advocacy for public policies that
prevent cancer and help those living with it.
Two in five Canadians will develop cancer at
some point in their lifetime, so I am positive many
of you have your own cancer stories. Come join
