Minimising impacts
One of HSBC’s commitments towards
sustainability is to disseminate a respectful
culture towards the environment among
all stakeholders.
HSBC Brazil seeks to reduce
environmental impacts based
upon three performance axles:
sustainability-focused business
operations, engagement of all
stakeholders, and reduction of the
environmental footprint. The latter
axle addresses the management
of direct impacts produced by
operations and the permanent
improvement of ecoefficiency
patterns. HSBC Group worldwide
operates in a four-year term
perspective concerning water and
energy consumption, emission
of greenhouse effect gases, and
selective waste discharge. The
last cycle was terminated in 2011.
Between 2012 and 2020, a new
plan of action, comprised of ten
initiatives, will be developed,
as follows:

- Innauguration of Renascença
branch: the building embodied
sustainability and water reduction
initiatives; wind power
is locally generated;
- Restoration of the Training
Centre: sustainable aspects,
such as water and energy
consumption reduction, 100%
biological treament of byproducts
generated by the
sewage system in the dorms,
and a space dedicated to the
interaction between employees
and sustainability-related
issues were addressed;
- Thin Client Project: helped
preventing 50% of report printing
at the branches. The project now
expects a yearly reduction of
30 million printing processes,
representing approximately
R$ 1.8 million.
Implement a Sustainability
Plan that can support HSBC’s
suppliers towards planning the
environmental management of
their companies.
- The pilot project has been
successfully carried out,
counting on the participation
of 45 suppliers.
Broaden the number of
branches assisted by the
Selective Collection Programme.
- A series of branches received
selective waste bins and
have been instructed on their
adequate use. Currently, the
Programme encompasses the
main administrative centres and
nearly 400 branches (45% of the
bank’s network).

Sustainability Plan and extend

Deploy the Champions Programme
Brazil, aimed to develop leadership
in sustainability and focusing on
enhancing employee engagement,

action for the next five years.
