Commission held a press conference the morning of May 28 th at the Salt<br />
Lake City & County Building to release a new report on women in Salt<br />
Lake City, “The Status of Women in Salt Lake City.”<br />
This report, several years in the making, includes data from<br />
surveys and dialogues conducted with over 600 women in the city,<br />
covering the issues of education, economics, social/political, and public<br />
health and safety. Each subcategory of the report gives the collected data,<br />
evidence for the issues cited, ideas for future research, and conclusions<br />
including possible actions to be taken to remedy the issues important to<br />
women.<br />

Dr. Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel of Advocacy<br />
to Speak at SBA Awards Luncheon<br />
Speaking at Utah SBA's annual Small Business<br />
Awards program on May 20, 2013 will be Dr.<br />
Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel of Advocacy of the<br />
U.S. Small Business Administration. Dr. Winslow<br />
Sargeant was appointed Chief Counsel for Advocacy<br />
by President Obama on August 19, 2010. As Chief<br />
counsel, Dr. Sargeant directs Advocacy's operations<br />
which include conducting research on the U.S. Small<br />
Business sector, advocating for small businesses<br />
within the federal governments agencies and<br />
rulemaking processes, reaching out to regional and<br />
state small business advocates and policymakers,<br />
and fostering public awareness of small business contributions and concerns.<br />

Jump Start Entrepreneur Training hosted<br />
by AARP, SBA and the Women's<br />
Business Center was held at the Salt Lake<br />
Chamber. The Organizations matched<br />
"encore entrepreneurs" with successful<br />
business owners and community leaders for advice and assistance.<br />
Matt Varilek Appointed Regional Administrator for SBA<br />
Region VIII<br />
On Tuesday, May 14, the U.S. Small Business<br />
Administration (SBA) announced the appointment<br />
of Matt Varilek as Regional Administrator for<br />
Region VIII, which encompasses Colorado,<br />
Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and<br />
Wyoming. Varilek has held a number of positions<br />
serving the people of South Dakota. He most<br />
recently served as the Economic Development<br />
Director in the Office of U.S. Senator Tim Johnson<br />
(SD). In that role, he was responsible for advising<br />
the Senator on Legislative issues related to small business and<br />
entrepreneurship, disaster response, budget and appropriations, and other<br />
economic issues.<br />
Verilek has spent his public career serving the people and small businesses of<br />
South Dakota, both as a candidate to public office, and as an advisor to<br />
Senators Johnson and Tom Daschle, respectively. In the private sector, he<br />
analyzed energy and environmental commodity market dynamics as Director<br />
of Policy and Research for Natsource LLC, a brokerage.<br />

Event Description:<br />
Business leaders interested in international business are invited to<br />
attend the conference at Salt Lake’s Hotel Monaco. Attendees will<br />
receive practical guidance from women who have personal experience<br />
conducting business in international markets. Their individual<br />
presentations and panel discussions will address concerns and<br />
challenges that arise when expanding businesses internationally and<br />
negotiating international contracts. Additionally, this “how-to”<br />
conference will also focus on cultural factors, security issues, leadership<br />
roles and company board development that may be unique to women<br />
working in international markets. Registration is required to attend the<br />

Venture Course in the Humanities: Apply for<br />

Did college pass you by Let us help you change that by applying for our<br />
Venture Course in the Humanities. The humanities are both practical and<br />
empowering in our free Venture course, taught by college faculty and<br />
accredited by Utah institutions.<br />
Venture is a free, two‐semester college humanities course for people of<br />
modest means who dare to dream, and provides adults facing economic<br />
barriers with a chance to start college. Venture includes sections in<br />
literature, American history, art history, philosophy, and writing/critical<br />
thinking. Successful students of Venture in Salt Lake City receive credit<br />
from Westminster College in Salt Lake City. In Ogden, Weber State<br />
University provides credit for Venture. In southern Utah, Venture students<br />
receive credit from Southern Utah University.<br />
We are now accepting applications for the Ogden, Salt Lake City, and<br />
Cedar City sites. To be eligible for Venture, applicants must be at least 18<br />
years old, able to read a newspaper in English, and living on a low<br />

co/venture partnership with Thrift Town Thrift Store to run all of<br />
it’s programs (we never charge the clients for anything we do).<br />
2. UAID has never applied for Government Funding, leaving<br />
that pot of money for the other awesome programs that provide<br />
critical need stuff, like housing, medical and caregiving.<br />
3. Other than a part time staff person paid out of the Thrift<br />
Town donation, all of our services are provided by volunteers.<br />

To continue do that, UAID needs all of your household<br />
goods, especially clothing for both our clients use and for resale in our<br />
partner thrift store-THRIFT TOWN (3300 S 1300 E).<br />
All donations, whether picked up by our trucks, dropped off at our office<br />
(1453 S. Major St. SLC {between State & Main} or dropped off at Thrift<br />
Town receive a tax deductible receipt.<br />
Please clean out your closets, have a clothing drive or be a drop off<br />
point for your neighborhood and a truck will come pick it up.<br />
We love to work with Eagle Scouts, churches, businesses,<br />
neighborhoods, families and individuals on clothing drives. We can bring<br />
our UAID truck to your parking lot on a weekend (like after a church<br />
service) so you can fill it up.<br />

First Peoples Fund Seeks VP of Ops & Programs in Rapid City<br />
First Peoples Fund (FPF) is seeking a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic and<br />
process-minded leader to help meet its growing needs. Under direction of and<br />
reporting to the president, the vice president of operations and programs will<br />
have both internal and external-facing responsibilities, ranging from delivery<br />
of services, organizational development, administration and human resources.<br />
The VP of Operations must be able to bring efficient and effective systems to<br />
increase the productivity and effectiveness of the organization, while also<br />
respecting and retaining the cultural values that are the heart of First Peoples<br />
Fund.<br />
This is a full-time, exempt position to be filled in FPF’s central office in Rapid<br />
City, South Dakota. In 2013, FPF will have a satellite office in Minnesota’s<br />
Twin Cities (Minneapolis/Saint Paul).<br />
Education & Experience: Master’s degree required or equivalent demonstrated<br />
in programmatic operations leadership, administrative capability in the forprofit<br />
and/or nonprofit arenas, preferably dealing with economic/community<br />
development in Native communities.<br />
