<strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong> a Signature Event for the PEI <strong>2014</strong> Celebrations<br />
Halifax, NS - The <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association (ECMA) is pleased <strong>to</strong> announce that<br />
Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn, Prince Edward Island has been awarded the opportunity <strong>to</strong> host <strong><strong>East</strong>link</strong> <strong>East</strong><br />
<strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong> <strong>2014</strong>, <strong>April</strong> 2-6.<br />
<strong><strong>East</strong>link</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong> returns <strong>to</strong> Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn earlier than anticipated <strong>to</strong> celebrate<br />
the 150 th anniversary of the 1864 Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn Conference in <strong>2014</strong>. Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn most<br />
recently hosted <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong> in 2011 <strong>to</strong> universal acclaim.<br />
The ECMA’s annual music week usually follows a regular regional rotation in Atlantic Canada.<br />
From time <strong>to</strong> time the schedule may be interrupted and the prospect of sharing in the PEI <strong>2014</strong><br />
celebrations made this a desirable opportunity.<br />
“The <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association is delighted <strong>to</strong> return <strong>to</strong> Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn for <strong>2014</strong>,” said Scott<br />
Burke, ECMA Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r. “We have recognized the importance of the <strong>2014</strong> celebrations,<br />
not only <strong>to</strong> our region but also <strong>to</strong> our nation, and are thrilled <strong>to</strong> bring <strong><strong>East</strong>link</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong><br />
<strong>Week</strong> <strong>to</strong> join the fun.”<br />
“The ECMAs and PEI <strong>2014</strong> are a perfect fit,” said PEI Tourism & Culture Minister Robert<br />
Henderson. “In <strong>2014</strong> we will be showcasing our Island talent and culture as we celebrate PEI’s<br />
role in the building of Canada and we are inviting all Canadians <strong>to</strong> joins us.”<br />
“The City of Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn is ecstatic <strong>to</strong> be hosting the <strong><strong>East</strong>link</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong> in<br />
<strong>2014</strong>,” said Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn Mayor Clifford Lee. “<strong>Music</strong> and culture play an important role within<br />
our community and the City will come alive with all of the featured venues and events. <strong>2014</strong> is<br />
going <strong>to</strong> be an exciting year for the City of Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn. We’re proud <strong>to</strong> be celebrating 150<br />
years as the Birthplace of Confederation, and we’re pleased that this cultural event will be<br />
included in our <strong>2014</strong> celebration calendar.”<br />
<strong><strong>East</strong>link</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong> <strong>2014</strong> in Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn follows the 25 th Anniversary of <strong>Music</strong><br />
<strong>Week</strong>, celebrated in Halifax March 6-10. With 350 musicians performing at 48 events over five
days, <strong><strong>East</strong>link</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong> 2013 was a rousing tribute <strong>to</strong> 25 years celebrating the<br />
best and brightest talent of Atlantic Canada.<br />
The <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association (ECMA) is a regional collaboration of people in the music<br />
industry of Atlantic Canada that fosters, develops and celebrates <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> and its artists<br />
locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The ECMA annually produces one of the <strong>to</strong>p<br />
music industry events in Canada, <strong>East</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Week</strong>, which includes awards, a festival,<br />
industry conference and the International Export Buyers Program. ECMA and its programs are<br />
generously funded by the Government of Canada through the International Business<br />
Development Agreement (represented by Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Foreign<br />
Affairs and International Trade Canada, and Industry Canada), the Department of Canadian<br />
Heritage (Canada <strong>Music</strong> Fund), the four provincial governments in Atlantic Canada, the<br />
Consulate General of Canada Sydney Australia and the Department of Foreign Affairs and<br />
International Trade, MUSICACTION, FACTOR and Canada’s private radio broadcasters. ECMA<br />
recognizes the support from the Nova Scotia Departments of Tourism, Communities, Culture,<br />
and Heritage and Labour and Advanced Education, and the Halifax Regional Municipality.<br />
In <strong>2014</strong>, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the 1864<br />
Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn Conference, which paved the way <strong>to</strong> Confederation. PEI <strong>2014</strong> Inc. is facilitating<br />
the planning, promotion and implementation of the Sesquicentennial. PEI <strong>2014</strong> events and<br />
activities will honour the past, celebrate the present, and plan a bold <strong>to</strong>morrow.<br />
The City of Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn is a flourishing community of more than 34,000 people located on<br />
the south shore of Prince Edward Island. Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn is the capital city of PEI, and is called<br />
the “Birthplace of Confederation” after the his<strong>to</strong>ric 1864 Charlotte<strong>to</strong>wn Conference, which led<br />
<strong>to</strong> Confederation.<br />
