1- <strong>Research</strong> Proposal 2- It is fact that all fossil sources of energy are depletable. Crude oil and oil products have been the most widely used energy sources for a long period. Hence it is of concern to look for substitute sources of energy for petroleum products. In many parts of the world, vegetable oils have been considered as viable substitutes for petroleum products, more specifically diesel fuels. As an example ,diesel fuel consumption in Egypt far exceeds its local production ,hence it is worthwhile to consider the feasibility of developing plant oil substitutes for petroleum products, specially diesel fuel. The main objective of this project is to produce biodiesel from jatropha oil on a semi pilot scale and studying all parameters affecting this process . A techno-economic study will be performed to evaluate the process profitability. 3- Project Duration One year after completion of purchasing the production unit and all chemicals and facilities . The production on commercial scale will start after the project ends. 4- Plan of project 1- Testing and characterization of non-edible oil. 2- Study of the main factors affecting biodiesel transesterification process such as :- a-Molar ratio of glycerides to alcohol . c-Reaction temperature and time . d- contents of free fatty acids and water 3- Determination of the best operation conditions . 4- Steps for biodiesel production at the best operation conditions :- -Heating and filtering the non-edible oil - Mixing catalyst and methanol. Based on an invitation from the Central <strong>Petroleum</strong> Laboratories (CPL) in Sudan , a delegate of Dr. Ahmed Al-Sabagh (Director of EPRI) , Dr. Salah Khalil (Director of Chemicals Center) and Dr. Saad Al-Desouky (Director of PVT Center) visited Sudan to investigate the possibility of cooperation between the "African Technology City" in Sudan and EPRI in Egypt in the field of biodiesel production from Sudanese Jatrova oil. Hopefully, this cooperation will commence in the current year 2013. EPRI Annual Report 2012 13
Crude oils contain substantial amounts of wax materials. Wax constituents tend to separate from the crude oil and start to crystallize causing several problems during production, storage and transportation. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Sabagh , the research team of the Chemicals Services and Development Center (CSDC) succeeded to develop a new version of pour point depressant named "PPD - EPRI 25 J" to overcome these problems. The new product has the privilege of being in the liquid form at moderate ambient temperature, and at the same time having high efficiency. This great success has been achieved as a result of hard work and continuous research of the PPD research group headed by Dr. Abdullatif Abdullrahman and consisting of Dr. Mohamed Elshafee , Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud , Chemist Sameh Abdullah , Eng. Mahmoud Rushdy and Tech. Abdulhannan as group members. This work has been significantly supported by Prof. Dr. Salah Khalil the director of CSDC. EPRI Annual Report 2012 14
