Paulo’s Winter Show
by Regina Levy
In December, the Paulo 7th grade major drama class of 2012-2013 performed their
holiday show. The show was a mixture of things, all tying together at the end. It took
place on Christmas Eve when many people were traveling to families near and far to
celebrate the season. There was a droll comic named Elvis, various families, different
cultures and secrets. The supposedly Paulo International Airport was the setting of this
wonderful play. The narrator accidently announced “The Polar, no, no, the Paulo
International Airport is now closed due to bad weather.” Then, the information agent
accidently called the personnel, “elves!” Lastly, the ground crew also called the airport,
the Polar Airport instead of the Paulo Airport. The airport was very homey. It even had
a fireplace. Hmmm, what was going on
We learned about the families and the people who were stranded at the airport.
We learned how each of them celebrated the winter holidays. We learned about
Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and many other religions. Then, on Christmas Eve,
everyone in the terminal read “The Night Before Christmas.” Santa, I mean the information
agent, brought Rudolph into the terminal and then danced around the auditorium. Ah
ha! Now we knew what the show was about. Did you figure it out Do you know where
they were
The show was great and everyone had a good time watching it and getting into the
holiday spirit. The chorus sang and the band played, adding to the spirit of the season.
Paulo’s feeder schools came to watch the show and the drama class performed the show at
night for parents and guests. Bravo to Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Quintivalle for your
guidance as our drama teachers. Thanks to Mr. Choi and Mr. Peters for your choral and
music assistance.A special thanks to Mr. Genovese, Mr. Walsh and Mrs. Goldman for their
wizardry in sound, staging, and lighting.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
The book teaches you about friendship, courage, and loyalty while using details to make it awesome.
My favorite part of The Hobbit was when Bilbo plays riddles with Gollum. This book is one of the
BEST books in the entire universe.
Winter is a wonderful thing!
With so many holidays, there are a lot of presents to bring!
There are many snowflakes
And the trees are bare.
Winter is filled with fun and joy
And if youre good, you might get toys!

New Year’s Resolutions
By Madison Baialardo
Did you ever wonder what a New Year’s resolution is Well, a
New Year’s resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to
reform a habit, or to do a particular project. It can be a lifestyle
change. Read on to learn about the top 10 resolutions.
1. I will practice good hygiene. This includes brushing my
teeth after meals, washing my hands after going to the bathroom,
covering my nose and mouth when I sneeze and cough, and keeping my nails clipped and filed.
Proper hygiene is important for good health.
2. I will make it a point to eat healthier. I will eat at least one fruit and one vegetable every
day. I will also drink more water and milk while drinking less soda and juice. I will be taking
better care of my body by watching what I put into it.
3. I will be responsible when using the computer. I will not give out any personal
information like my full name, birthday, address, phone number, or name of the school I
currently attend. I will review Internet safety with my parents.
4. I will volunteer at my local church or in the neighborhood. I could give my old clothes
and toys to kids in need. I could help serve dinner at a soup kitchen. I could clean the
litter off the beaches or help out at an animal shelter.
5. I will keep my bedroom organized and my bed made. I will put my dirty clothes in the
laundry basket and hang my towel up in the bathroom. When I am done with one toy, I
will clean it up before taking out the next one.
6. I will work on being polite. I will not answer my parents back. I will try not to use
curse words. I will show respect to people older than me.
7. I will do my best in school. I will hand in my homework on time and not wait until the
night before to start my science fair project. If I need help with a subject, I will ask
for the help.
8. I will be kind to all kids. If I see someone who is sad, I will try to cheer them up. If
a new kid comes into our class, I will try to help them. I will not make fun of them.
9. I will make sure I exercise. I will try to join a sports team. I will try to get out more
and get fresh air.
10. I will try to limit the time I watch t.v. I will try to play video games that are not as
violent as some others.

Sports Corner
Anthony Gangemi
Sandy Alderson began the off season
wanting to re-sign National League Cy Young
Award winner R.A. Dickey. But as the pitcher’s
value in the trade market increased and as
other teams pursued Dickey with other high level prospects, the Mets’ general manager knew he
had to check out all possibilities.
In the seven-player deal, Dickey and catchers Josh Thole and Mike
Nickeas were sent to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets received Travis
d’Arnaud, who is considered to be the best prospect for catcher in the
league, and a promising right handed pitcher, Noah Syndergaard. They also
acquired veteran catcher John Buck along with Wuilmer Becerra, a low level
prospect who plays in the outfield. The trade became official on December
16 when Dickey agreed to a contract extension with the Jays. He will get $5
million in 2013 and $24 million for 2014-15, with a $12-million team option
for 2016 and a $1-million buyout. That makes it a guaranteed three-year, $30-million contract.
The 38-year-old now leaves the Mets as the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner who won
twenty games the previous season and now is the centerpiece of a blockbuster trade.
In his goodbyes, Dickey said to his fans “Now that it’s official, I want to say that I don’t
have the words to express how grateful I am to you for the steadfast support and
encouragement I received from all of you,” Dickey wrote on his Twitter feed Monday night,
“I’ve always felt that there was a connection beyond the uniform. Thank you for making me feel
wanted.”
Science Corner
David Ip
We just came back to school from winter break, and it’s a new year! But, as we play in our
homes with the heat turned on at full blast, did you notice during the break that the days
started to get longer During the beginning of the school year, the days started to get shorter
and shorter. So, why are the days now getting longer Well, the day with the shortest amount
of sunlight (in the northern hemisphere) is December 21 st or 22 nd . This is called the winter
solstice. The day of the winter solstice is when the sun is at it’s lowest height.
After that, daylight starts to get longer, and then we can do more nightly
activities! The days will get longer until June 21 st or June 22 nd . This will be the
longest day of sun for the year. The Sun will be at it’s highest point and is
called the summer solstice. However, it is the complete opposite in the
Southern Hemisphere. They have their summer solstice in December, and the
winter solstice in June! Imagine having the holidays in the blazing heat!

Pet Corner by Amanda Milo
January, the month of new beginnings, new adventures,
new memories and new pets! You may always think that a “new
pet” may be a puppy or a kitten, but what about a pig Yes,
people keep pigs as pets. They’re called potbelly mini pigs and
they may be one of the cutest pets around. If you decide on
getting one of these cute, pink pets, here is how to take care
of them.
Normally, potbelly pigs will eat anything you give to them. Just feeding them anything can
lead to obesity and other health problems. They can also become very persistent and can even
learn to open the fridge! What these piggies need is a diet high in fiber and low in calories. You
should feed them food designed for potbelly mini pigs or mini pigs. You can find that at a local
pet store. If they don’t have it, you may be able to order it from the store. Non-breeding pigs
should be fed about ½ a cup of food per 25 pounds of the pig’s weight. The amount should be
divided into two meals.
Just like you train a dog, you have to train a pig to go
outside. After every meal, take your pig outside to let it
relieve itself. Like a dog, make sure to use a lot of positive
reinforcement. They don’t always go outside for that
reason. Your pig will also need to go outside for exercise. It
is very similar to taking care of a dog.
Not only are these pink friends similar to taking care
of a dog, but they are also cute like dogs. You may not think
a pig is cute, but they sure are.
