Athletics in family Brother Anders (b '82): LJ: 6.45/6.68i '99
Note: Began as a high jumper (national youth team), due to injury switched to 200m at age 19, then to long jump at age 21,
added 400m at age 23. First ever combined event a 5.018 indoor heptathlon at age 24, first ever decathlon at age 25 scoring
7.253! At '06 Swedish Championships tried 400m Hurdles for the first time. Fell twice and leisurely walked across the finish
line in 94.27. However, that strangely enough turned out to be the 8th fastest legal time in the heats so advanced him to the
final! In the final stayed on his feet and got the silver medal with 52.93! That drop of 42.34 seconds (44.9%) must constitute
a WR in PB improvement!
Has full time employment as a management consultant at McKinsey&Company.
Lars Andersson (orienteering coach) and together they realised that her best option was to focus on running not
orienteering.
Became a Swedish citizen on 11 May '09.
During the coldest winter months in Sweden resides in Eldoret (Kenya).
Quickly back into competitive running after daughter Beyoncé was born on 25 Jan '09: On 25 Apr (i.e. just three months
later) finished 4th in the Swedish 4 km XC championships, on 16 May ran a 1:14 halfmarathon and on 30 May won the
Stockholm Marathon in 2:33!
On 22 Jan '10 became the first Swedish woman to run a sub-2:30 marathon.
Note: In her teens was the No 2 in Sweden in Heptathlon in her age group behind Carolina Klüft. Knee injury in '01 made
high jump (and thereby Heptathlon) impossible to pursue, instead took up pole vaulting.
Finally in '07 - after a break of five years - could return to her first love, the combined events.
Secured the '09 WCh ticket by lowering her 800m PB by over three seconds in a solo run (won by seven seconds!) at the
European Cup. Mother Lena in '79 at age 16 set a Swedish senior record in the LJ with 6.33.
Note: With background in cross-country running, american football and judo decided at age 16 to become a runner and
“immediately” ran credible times of 4:10/9:18 for 1500m/3000m. However, had mind set on shorter distances with the long
time focus on 800m to which end competed mainly at 400m until '06.
Big national breakthrough summer of '04 by at age 18 running three truly remarkable negatively-split 800m races: Winning
the national race at DN Galan in 1:48.15 (54.7/53.5!), placing 2nd at the Swedish Championships in 1:47.07 (c54.5/52.6!)
and winning the match vs Finland in 1:50.66 (59.3/51.4). In latter race had 23.7 between 500m and 700m!
Stunned onlookers - and left the opposition standing - by employing the same kind of "lightning strikes" tactics at the '05
European Junior Championships. Despite being last with 300m to go in the slow paced final - and despite not hitting the
front until coming off the last bend - won by 1.21 seconds!
Nine fastest races: 1:46.36 – 1:46.43 – 1:46.43 – 1:46.46 – 1:46.57 – 1:46.60 - 1:46.70 – 1:46.77 – 1:46.95.
Note: When in '02 retaining World Junior title improved a WJR that had stood since the year of her birth.
In first 17 major international championships/games struck gold 15 times and bronze twice.
At 22 the youngest ever to get the “grand-slam” of championships: OG, WCh, WICh, ECh, EICh.
In Athens '04 her 517 points advantage on 2nd place was larger than the gap between 2nd and 25th!
EAA female “European Athlete of the year" in '03 and '06.
In '07 the only athlete to defeat World Champion Tatyana Lebedeva in the LJ (at Lausanne Super Grand Prix).
In first “competitive” TJ as a senior in the match vFIN '04 did 13.87 with right foot take-off and 13.73 with left foot takeoff!
On 19 March '08 announced – giving "need for a new challenge" as reason – decision to quit the Heptathlon (after six years
as undisputed No 1!) to instead concentrate on the LJ and TJ.
Thus stopped winning streak in heptathlon at 19 (with average winning margin of 333 points)!
Had a tibia stress fracture in late '08 and in June '09 suffered severe hamstring pull that demanded operation. Returned to
competition on 19 May '10 then had a calf muscle injury on 12 June and made new comeback on 11 July.
SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. European Championships in Athletics – Barcelona 2010.
Presenting Swedish Athletics
The mission of the Swedish Athletic Association, commonly called Swedish Athletics, is
to promote, develop and administer athletics. The role of the Association is to represent
athletics in Sweden while, at the same time, be responsible for international and
national competitions, along with the participation of the National Team in World and
European Championships and international competitions for youths, juniors and
seniors, among others.
Formed in 1895, the Swedish Athletic Association is one of the biggest sports associations
in Sweden. Today, it has approx. 350,000 members, organized in around 1,000
clubs divided into 23 districts. In addition to this, there are a half a million people, the
majority of whom are not connected to an association, participating every year in competitions
on main roads and cross-country. In addition to this, there are more than a
million run who for exercise without taking part in any competition at all.
The basis of all these activities is run by non-profit managers in clubs. Athletics is a
sport that requires a lot of managers, trainers and instructors. Training courses for
these people are arranged by nine Development Centres. On the central level, there are
the Athletics Association Council and the Association Secretariat that carry out what
has been decided on at the annual Association Meeting.
Vision
• That athletics will be one of the country’s most attractive sports, having strong support
from a broad range of the population. Our sport is to be a forerunner, when it
comes to offering all the participants in our activities an enjoyable, stimulating personal
development, physically, psychologically, socially and culturally.
• That athletics will stand for a positive lifestyle, where both top-level and broad activities
provide the power of attraction and inspiration for young and old, women and
men alike, irrespective of their ethnic or social background.
Concept for activities
• That athletics will provide people with the opportunity of being able to participate as
athletes, managers, officials, trainers or simply as parents of athletes for all those that
want. This is to take place through comprehensive national Association activities,
developed and adapted to the demands of the times for meaningful leisure time activities
and carried out in inspiring, practical environments.
recruited by a local club to be the fourth member of their 4x100m team. With very little practice and just two previous
races the team got the silver medals and surpassed the previous U17 national record.
While the original three members of that team quit the sport within a few years the last minute record stayed on and now at
age 29 has suddenly lowered 400m PB by a second.
Note: First coach Viljo Nousiainen had developed clubmate Patrik Sjöberg into the world’s premier high jumper in mid
1980’s. When Viljo suddenly passed away in spring of '99 Yannick Tregaro (himself guided by Viljo to 2.17 and a World
Junior Ch final at age 18 in '96) stepped in as coach despite being Christian’s senior by just two years.
“Birth” as true worldclass triple jumper on 14 June '01: On a rain-soaked Helsinki Olympic Stadium got first 17m-mark as
well as first victory over legend Jonathan Edwards.
Since first exceeding 17m has surpassed that limit in 99 out of 104 meets (including a streak of 58 meets). Adding five qualification
rounds he has 105 competitions at 17+!
Achieved the "Grand Slam" of championships (OG, WCh, WICh, ECh, EICh) in '02-'04.
In '04 claimed 50% of the Golden League jackpot after winning the TJ at all six meets.
Kept out of competition from 18 Sep '04 until 12 June '06 by ankle injury which needed four operations. Despite that long
layoff had 17.09 in first attempt in comeback meet and in less than a month had reached 17.62.
In all his eight international championship qualifying rounds from '01 WCh onwards achieved the pre-set standard for the
final on his very first attempt.
Persistent hamstring problems ruined most of the last three years. Since 13 July '07 only one outdoor meet in '08, three in
'09 and three indoors in '10.
Resides in Monaco since autumn of '02. Undisputed No 1 in the EAA voting for male “European Athlete of 2003”.
and further to 80.71 in the final.
In the '09 edition of the prestigeous match vs Finland was leading going into the final round and only one of the three
Finnish throwers managed to – barely – pass and grab the win.
Due to persistent back problems forced to compete sparingly in the last five years. E.g. opened this season as late as 15 July.
Note: Winter of '04 ran the 200m in six meets, improved the NIR on four occasions and won all races but the last, the
WICh final which he lost by 0.06.
In March '06 ran an unofficial European Indoor record for 300m in Liévin lowering Erwin Skamrahl's 20 years old mark of
32.72 by 0.11.
First international success as a 400m-runner (silver at '01 European Juniors) but then chose 200m as main event to improve
his speed. However, long term focus remained at 400m and after '06 ECh 200m silver switched priorities and re-focused on
the 1-lap event.
In summer of '07 lowered PB by over one second and in Osaka WCh ran sub-45 in all three rounds.
Had four individual silvers, one bronze and two 4th places from international championships before striking gold at '09
European Indoors.
From '01 WCh to '09 WCh competed in every championship (Olympic, World and European) outdoors and indoors, i.e. did
17 straight championship starts before passing the '10 indoor season.
STEFAN OLSSON,
Team Manager

SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. European Championships in Athletics – Barcelona 2010.
Invitation to Stockholm and Sweden
in 2011
Sweden and Stockholm are looking forward to welcoming
other European athletes to the Stockholm Stadium in
June 2011 to the European Team Championships Super
League.
Each summer, DN Galan fills the Stockholm Stadium
with spectators, who are usually treated to athletics that
are a little out of the ordinary. Next year, competitors in the European Team
Championships and the public will experience this special arena, which is filled with
history.
“It’s very important for Sweden to have the opportunity of organising international
competitions and championships. They present major goals for our athletes to achieve
and give spectators the possibility of watching top class athletics at close quarters,”
says Stefan Olsson, the Swedish National Team Manager.
This year, Sweden competed in the second division – First League. It came second there,
qualifying itself for the highest division – Super League, which is being organised in
Stockholm in 2011.
Stefan continues, “We’re resolved to show that we belong in the highest division. The
European Team Championships and the World Athletics Championships in South
Korea will be the most important national team events next summer. Since the
European Team Championships affect so many more than the World Championships,
we’re putting a lot of effort into competing in the best possible way on home ground at
the Stockholm Stadium.”
Through the years, many world records have been made at the Stadium. The tradition
of the arena harks back to 1912, when Sweden acted as host to the Summer Olympics
that year. When the Stockholm Stadium was built for 1912, its purpose was to act as
an arena for the core events in the Olympic Games, viz. athletics. Ever since then, the
Stadium has been the natural competition arena for athletics in the capital city of
Sweden. Every year, for almost a whole century, it has been the home not only of
Swedish but also of the world’s foremost athletes.
These days, the Stockholm Stadium is host to two athletics events that are well known
and appealing on a global level. They are DN Galan and the Stockholm Marathon.
Now all the competitors and spectators at the European Team Championships Super
League are going to enjoy yet another world class athletics event in this special arena.
Finnkampen, is a prestigious international match between Finland and Sweden, which
takes place every year. It is organised in Sweden every second year. In the last few years,
it has been held at the Ullevi Arena in Göteborg. However, Finnkampen is going to be
back at the Stockholm Stadium in 2013.
