HISTORY
of the TRI-CITIES
The Tri-Cities is comprised of the cities of Kennewick,
Pasco, and Richland. Pasco was the first of the three to
be incorporated as a city in 1891, Kennewick in 1904,
and Richland followed in 1910.
Farming was the basis of almost everything in the area.
The railroad was the primary mode of transportation
of goods, and Pasco was a stop along the route. Prior
to the construction of Hanford, Pasco’s railway station
was cause for the largest population. Virgil G. Bogue
had been working in Peru cutting a railroad line through
the Andes Mountains through Cerro de Pasco.
The start contrast between the cool mountains of the
Andes and the hot desert prompted Bogue to name
the town Pasco. The name Kennewick is believed to be
a native word meaning “grassy place.” It has also been
called “winter paradise” because of the mile winters in
the area.
The most notable time period in history which gave
rise to the rapid expansion of the Tri-Cities came in the
1940s during World War II with the construction of the
U.S. Department of Defense’s “Manhattan Project.”
Overnight, the population of the Tri-Cities Began to
boom, especially that of Richland. The contractors
molded the city of Richland into a bedroom community
for the employees of the Hanford Nuclear Facility. By
the latter part of 1944, the first reactor had begun the
production of plutonium that was used in the second
atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, on August
9, 1945. It was at that time that the residents of the Tri-
Cities learned what purpose the Hanford site held. Until
the bombs were dropped, few knew what Hanford was
for. Hanford ended plutonium production in 1987.
The population of all three cities grew dramatically
between 1940 and 1950: Pasco +260% (3,913 to
10,200), Kennewick +526% (1,918 to 10,100), and
Richland +8,829% (247 to 21,809). During the 1970s
Kennewick overtook Richland as the biggest city and
has retained the title since. If the Tri-Cities were
counted as one city, it would be the fourth largest city
in Washington.
After the Cold War ended in the early 1990s, the need
for nuclear weapons technology dwindled. However,
the area has attracted other industries such as
Battelle, which operates the Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory, and many government contractors involved
in nuclear waste clean-up at Hanford that still to the
day keep the population of the rise every year.
The area has also acquired a sizable Hispanic
population due to the agricultural industry and the
weather’s similarity to many Latin American countries.
According to the 2000 Census, over half of Pasco’s
population is Hispanic.
