SYDNEY MEDICAL PROGRAM SNAPSHOT<br />

Four main themes provide the framework for the goals <strong>of</strong> the program, the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> the curriculum and assessment. Students are required to demonstrate satisfactory<br />

performance in all four themes in order to progress.<br />

Program themes<br />

Basic and Clinical Sciences ensures a strong foundation<br />

in science.<br />

Patient and Doctor teaches clinical skills, diagnostic<br />

methods, patient communication and patient safety.<br />

Population Medicine introduces public health, evidencebased<br />

medicine, statistics and health economics.<br />

Personal and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development includes medical<br />

ethics, medico-legal issues and doctors’ health.<br />

in Vietnam).<br />

Years 3 & 4<br />

<strong>The</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> students spend their Elective Block at<br />

the start <strong>of</strong> Year 4 gaining clinical experience at overseas<br />

sites. Some are affiliated, others organised by students<br />

independently.<br />

International students may undertake approved<br />

substitute terms for a maximum <strong>of</strong> one Block, usually in<br />

their country <strong>of</strong> origin.
