F STUDY MEDICINE AT SYDNEY Sydney Medical Program is a four-year graduate entry course with three primary aims for graduates: excellent clinical skills and preparedness for practice; experience in research; and experience and awareness of health in an international setting. Years 1 & 2 are spent on the main university campus at Camperdown, with one day each week spent in clinical schools. For years 3 & 4, students are based in their clinical school. Clinical learning occurs at multiple widely-dispersed sites (hospitals and community, metropolitan, urban and rural). The program is accredited by the Australian Medical Council.
G WHY SYDNEY 10 REASONS TO STUDY MEDICINE AT SYDNEY 1. A graduate program with a diverse student community. Students come from different cultural, academic and professional backgrounds, providing a dynamic and interesting perspective in tutorials and clinical groups. In 2013, close to 30 percent of students starting medicine at Sydney had completed degrees in law, business, arts, music or engineering, with the remainder having completed degrees in science, medical sciences, health sciences or allied health. 2. A curriculum which provides a strong base in medical sciences and clinical skills, while fostering problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 3. Excellent clinical training facilities at leading NSW hospitals, urban and rural. Sydney has clinical schools at Royal North Shore Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Concord Hospital, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Westmead Hospital, Sydney Adventist Hospital, Nepean Hospital, and in the country, medical students are based at Orange, Dubbo, Broken Hill and Lismore Base Hospitals. 5. Outstanding teachers, with many experts in their fields. Sydney academic staff include leading clinicians and researchers. 6. Integration with research and opportunities for all students to participate in research. Sydney Medical School is one of Australia’s leading research organisations, recognised for the quality and impact of its research. Students are encouraged to develop their research skills by participating in a research project and have access to a wide array of opportunities. 7. International connections and the opportunity to experience placements in a wide number of international settings. Sydney has extensive international connections in developed and developing countries, including many in our region, and students are encouraged to spend at least some of the time as a medical student in an international setting. 8. Interaction between students and staff and student participation in committee and planning forums. 9. An active student-run society, MedSoc, to unite the student community. 10. Sydney Medical School is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the world. In 2012, the School was ranked: – – 25th in the world in Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE). – – 21st in the world in Life Sciences and Medicine by the QS World University Rankings.
