Terry’s Wishes
In accordance with Terry’s wishes, the Foundation will not accept support from those who derive financial
profit from their association with The Terry Fox Foundation or any event hosted in Terry’s name (i.e. The Great
Canadian Hair “DO”, The Terry Fox Run, Team Up For Terry, or National School Run Day).
We recognize and accept that there is a variety of ways in which a
company’s support of The Terry Fox Foundation or participation in Terry
Fox fundraising events will be seen by the public. For example: media
coverage of a firm’s participation, listing of company names on Run site
boards and Terry Fox Foundation produced publications.
The Foundation logo and annual Terry Fox design will not coexist on any
item (printed or otherwise) with any for profit entity. Terry Fox promotional
and merchandise materials will not bear the name or logo of any firm,
with the exception of customizing t-shirts for corporate teams to include
team names on back.
The Foundation may approach companies for donated products and services that are in keeping with the
image and atmosphere of the Foundation.
Change Your Look, Change Cancer Research
In comparing the research contributions of different world regions in the top 50 biomedical journals from
1995 to 2002, Canadian researchers lead the world in the number of research publications produced
per billion dollars of funding. That means we are getting more “bang for our bucks” in terms of how much
money is going into research and the discoveries being made.
Canadian researchers have been involved with breakthroughs such as discovering stem cells in blood,
discovering the “language” of cell growth communication, discovering the BRCA1 breast cancer
susceptibility gene, developing a technique to easily insert mutations into genes (Nobel Prize), the HPV
vaccine, and using viruses to target and destroy tumour tissue.
This remarkable progress in cancer research by Canadians is in no small part due to Terry Fox’s legacy.
Why We “DO” It: Don a “DO”, Save a Life
As per Terry’s wishes, The Terry Fox Foundation funds only the best research programs available,
regardless of the cancer “site”. This means that our funds impact research programs into a wide variety of
cancers, such as breast, prostate, lung, ovarian, pancreas, leukemia and more.
Funds are currently allocated by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and The Terry Fox Research
Institute, which has launched a groundbreaking study into lung cancer. The discoveries made in cancer
research labs have a very real, and positive, impact on cancer patients.
The most recent results for 5-Year Survival Rates indicate the great progress that has been made,
with rates of higher than 80% for breast, prostate, melanoma, testicular, Hodgkin’s, bladder, cervical and
