To provide care to patients, families <strong>and</strong> carers, across a variety of care settings, who have<br />

complex pain, symptom, spiritual <strong>and</strong> psychosocial needs which require Specialist Palliative<br />

Care interventions<br />

To ensure <strong>the</strong> provision of high quality multi-professional care to patients with complex<br />

palliative care needs, including non cancer conditions, e.g. COPD <strong>and</strong> heart failure <strong>and</strong><br />

neurological conditions such as MND<br />

To ensure <strong>the</strong> implementation of clinical governance activities e.g. audit of clinical practice,<br />

implementation of best practice statements<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> advancement of palliative care through an extensive outreach programme of<br />

6) Key Results<br />

This job description is not exhaustive <strong>and</strong> is accompanied by a sample job plan for <strong>the</strong> position of<br />

<strong>Specialty</strong> <strong>Doctor</strong>. The final job plan will be agreed depending upon <strong>the</strong> successful c<strong>and</strong>idate’s<br />

experience. There is flexibility to change <strong>the</strong> hours of work as well as days of work to suit <strong>the</strong> successful<br />

c<strong>and</strong>idate. The final agreed job plan will be reviewed on an annual basis.<br />

General<br />

1. To provide continuity of medical care for in-patient services on an agreed sessional basis.<br />

2. To assess patients at home, hospice or hospital.<br />

3. To take clinical responsibility for patients as directed by <strong>the</strong> Consultant.<br />

4. To liaise with o<strong>the</strong>r members of <strong>the</strong> multidisciplinary team, patients’ families, Primary<br />

Healthcare teams <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospital services.<br />

5. To participate in <strong>the</strong> 1:5 (effectively 1:4) on-call rota with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r medical staff within <strong>the</strong><br />

Hospice.<br />

6. To fully participate in educational activities including <strong>the</strong> training of junior medical staff as<br />

<strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y are in post.<br />

7. To develop high professional st<strong>and</strong>ards within <strong>the</strong> Hospice <strong>and</strong> promote multi-professional<br />

8. To promote an ethos of audit throughout <strong>the</strong> services.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> past year <strong>the</strong> 14-bedded in-patient unit at <strong>the</strong> hospice received 278 admissions from a total<br />

of 791 referrals of which <strong>the</strong> acute sector accounts for 491.<br />

Our Team<br />

Dedicated staff are <strong>the</strong> Hospice's greatest asset in its mission to provide consistently high<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards of patient <strong>and</strong> family care. The Hospice invests time <strong>and</strong> effort in maintaining a culture<br />

that encourages staff to develop <strong>the</strong>ir skills <strong>and</strong> strive to continually achieve high st<strong>and</strong>ards of<br />

service. We currently have over 140 staff, both full <strong>and</strong> part time, supported by nearly 700<br />

volunteers.<br />

We employ a wide variety of professionals including doctors, registered nurses, healthcare<br />

assistants, allied health professionals <strong>and</strong> a family support team all directly involved in <strong>the</strong> care of<br />

patients <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir families. Behind <strong>the</strong> scenes, administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff keep <strong>the</strong> Hospice<br />

running smoothly, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are working in administration, fundraising, finance or in domestic<br />

<strong>and</strong> portering roles.<br />

How <strong>the</strong> Hospice is funded<br />

Our services are provided in partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow <strong>and</strong> Clyde. The balance of<br />

funding will be sourced from charitable donations <strong>and</strong> will call on significant innovation to meet <strong>the</strong><br />

funding challenges ahead. Increasing <strong>the</strong> level of predictable income will remain an ongoing<br />

priority so that we may bring forward greater financial security for <strong>the</strong> Hospice. We depend on <strong>the</strong><br />

generosity of our supporters to raise <strong>the</strong> £2.6 million that is required annually to maintain our<br />

invaluable services.<br />
