• Plant responses to trace element toxicity: cellular mechanisms for detoxification
and tolerance (PTDC/AGR-AAM/102821/2008). January 2010 to Janurary 2013
• Effect of phytochemicals on organic matter transformation and on key processes
of carbon and nitrogen cycles in soil (PTDC/AGR-AAM/102006/2008). To start
in September 2010
• "Green Dairy – Atlantic Dairy Systems and Environment” project financed by
INTERREG IIIB – Atlantic Area (FEDER). Started in June 2004 and ended in
May 2007. Participation as post-doctoral student from Universidade de Trás-os-
Montes e Alto Douro
4.2 Laboratory and Field activities
• Cattle manure and slurry treatment by separation and acidification: process
optimization and characterization of the fractions obtained.
• Quantification of the gaseous emissions (CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 O e NH 3 ) from treated and
untreated animal slurry and slurry fractions obtained after mechanical and
chemically enhanced separation during storage.
• Nitrogen, phosphorous and carbon turnover and gaseous emissions after
application to soil of treated and untreated organic residues (animal manure, olive
mill waste, sludges).
• Effect of the incorporation of nitrification inhibitors (DCD and DMPP) with cattle
slurry on the annual ryegrass yield and soil mineral N dynamics after application
to soil.
• Reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural purposes: influence on nutrient and
carbon turnover in soil.
