FERNANDA MARIA MIRANDA CABRAL is an Agronomist graduated in 1974 at the Instituto 

Superior de Agronomia, and took her PhD Degree in Agriculture Sciences in 1990 at the 

Technical University of Lisbon – Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA). In 1996, she frequented 

the International Postgraduate Training Course on Soil Pollution and Soil Protection at the 

University of Ghent-Belgium, and in 1997 she made a training stage supported by the OECD 

program “Biological Resource Management for Sustainable Agricultural Systems” at the 

Department of Land Resource Science - University of Guelph, Canada. In 1999 she completed 

the “Agregação” (“Habilitation degree”) at ISA - Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. 

She currently holds the position of Associate Professor at the Biosystems Engineering 

Department at ISA, and has been involved in the teaching of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, 

Biochemistry, Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition and Soil Pollution. 

Since 2003 she is the Scientific Coordinator of the Research Unit “Química Ambiental” 

(“Environmental Chemistry”), and the principal investigator responsible for the research 

group: “Best Management Strategies for Agricultural Utilization of Organic Wastes” 

She has been involved as coordinator or team member in several national and international 

R&D projects and EU concerted actions, studying new approaches dealing with Waste 

Management and Soil Quality and Fertility to assess the agronomic value and 

environmental impacts related to the application to soils of -on and -off farm organic wastes 

in raw or after being submitted to different treatments in conventional and organic farming 

systems, to assess: (i) recycling of nutrients (namely carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) via 

crop residues or organic amendments; (ii) chemical, biochemical and biological methods to 

assess C and N mineralization from organic amendments; (iii) application of C and N-models 

to meet the environmental diagnosis requirements; (iv) approaches to N management in 

order to improve N-use efficiency; (v) indicators of soil quality; (vi) diagnostics tools for 

fertilisers recommendation and fertilisation strategies to reduce environmental impacts 

(controlling N and P flows and losses); (vii) assessment of aesthetic crop quality parameters. 

In this research area she was the supervisor/co-supervisor of several undergraduate and 

Master theses at the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) already completed. Currently she is 

responsible for the supervision of 1 Master thesis and 1 PhD thesis still in progress at the 

Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) and co-supervisor of 2 PhD theses in progress at the 

University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) 

Professor Fernanda Cabral belongs to the Grant Review Committee as scientific advisor of 

the Italian Ministry for Education University and Research (MIUR) in the cluster of projects 

identified as "Soil Integrated Management", and functions as regular referee of several 

scientific journals (e.g.: Environmental Pollution; Journal of Environmental Quality, Soil Science 

Society of American Journal, Waste Management & Research, Bioresouce Technology etc..). 

Between 2006-2010 was President of the Portuguese Soil Science Society (SPCS). 

She is author/co-author of several publications in international and national peer review 

journals, chapters in books and proceedings of international meetings.
