Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery:
Technique and Management
of Complications
Presenters: Arif Adenwala, Mahesh Dalvi, Tasneem Parkar
Objective: To Explain to the Target Audience the Technique of
the Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery and its Importance
During Transition from Conventional Cataract Surgery
to Phacoemulsification.
Summary of Content: Manual small incision cataract surgery
(SICS) offers similar advantages of Phacoemulsification with
the merits of wider applicability, better safety, a shorter learning
curve and lower cost. It can be performed in almost all types of
cataracts. Transition to phacoemulsification is easier if one has
mastered manual SICS, as familiarity of steps common to both
technique helps reduce the incidence of complications.
The Important steps of making sclerocorneal pocket tunnel
incision, delivery of nucleus in to the anterior chamber and wound,
implantation of lens and wound closure would be discussed.
The different methods of nucleus delivery out of the AC by
hydro-expression, visco-expression, vectis assisted delivery,
or the fish-hook technique would be explained.
An open minded approach and perseverance will ensure
smooth learning and eventual mastery. Management and
Prevention of Complications, occurring at each step of surgery
would be discussed.
Target Audience: General Ophthalmologist and Cataract
Surgeons
Educational Level: Beginners and Intermediate
