Alkyl Acid Phosphate Catalyst

NACURE ® 4000
NACURE ® 4000 is a 100% active alkyl acid
phosphate catalyst designed for use with high imino
(NH) or polymeric melamines and phenolic resins for
promoting adhesion to a variety of
substrates. It offers:

Excellent adhesion to metal and
aluminum substrates
Lower VOCs
Low temperature cures
Good long term package stability
The typical use levels of NACURE 4000 is 0.5 to 3.0% as supplied on total resin solids (TRS).
2.0 - 4.0% (TRS)
It is recommended to use a relatively high molecular weight acrylic resin for ambient cure conditions to
achieve films with optimum tack-free and through-cure properties.
Adhesion
NACURE 4000 offers excellent adhesion properties
to a variety of substrates. The formulation shown
in Graph 1.1 demonstrates excellent adhesion
properties found when using this catalyst to
accelerate the cure of a polymeric melamine resin
with a short oil alkyd. NACURE 4000 is compared
to several commercial acid phosphate products.
Catalyst dosages are adjusted to give the same
equivalents of phosphate in each formulation.
Formulations containing any of these weak acids
gives good adhesion to iron phosphate treated cold
rolled steel. However, significant advantages to
coating adhesion on aluminum are found with
NACURE 4000.
Cure Response
NACURE 4000 can be utilized with amino resins
that are available for coatings that need ambient
cure response. A solventbased clearcoat
demonstrating this is shown in Table 2.1. Ineos
Resimene 717 is a partially alkylated, high imino
melamine resin. This is combined with a high
molecular weight acrylic resin, using both 2% and
4% NACURE 4000 catalyst as supplied on total
resin solids to drive the reaction under ambient
conditions (25 - 28˚C).
coating are tack free after 20 minutes at ambient
temperatures. After one week of ambient cure time
the MEK solvent rub resistance shows a significant
improvement using NACURE 4000, indicating films
are more highly crosslinked than the control.
Additional improvements in crosshatch adhesion
are also evident in the catalyzed coatings.
NACURE 4000 is a free alkyl acid phosphate catalyst. It
can provide extended storage stability in formulations with
common techniques used to prolong catalyzed
coating shelf life. This includes the use of a minimum of
10% alcohol solvent to reduce premature amino resin
crosslinking and self-condensation reactions during storage.
This catalyst can provide superior storage stability at low
dosages in comparison to a variety of other acid
phosphate catalysts available. Graph 2.2 demonstrates
smaller viscosity increases using NACURE 4000 after 57
days of ambient storage in the coating shown in Table 1.1.
For optimum stability the catalyst can be added to the
coating at the time of application to avoid any shelf life
issues.
