INTRODUCTION 

New London Hospital 

OUR MISSION: New London Hospital provides safe quality care for every patient, 

every time in partnership with patients, families and healthcare providers. 

New London Hospital is a 25-bed rural community hospital with a 58-bed long-term extended care center. 

In April of 2003 we became a Critical Access Hospital. The beds may be used for acute care as well as 

swing beds (for patients who need hospitalization, but are not considered acute care patients). 

New London Hospital is a member of the New England Alliance for Health (NEAH). NEAH is a consortium 

of 11 member organizations in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. It offers member services in 

the areas of quality improvement, financial planning, benchmarking, materials management, pharmacy 

services, education and development for professional staff and trustees, collaborative regional health 

planning, and access to property and casualty insurance. 

Collaborative agreements with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Concord Hospital help us 

meet the needs of those patients who require a tertiary care setting. These agreements also allow us to 

bring many services to our patients and the community that are usually only found in larger hospitals.

William P. Clough Extended Care Center 

At the William P. Clough Extended Care Center at New London Hospital, we are committed to high 

standards of care. We are small enough to know all of the residents and their families. Our skilled care 

program is designed as a transition program for patients who are able to return to their home or assisted 

care living situations. A group of three hospitalists (medical doctors with a special interest in geriatrics) 

provides on-site care to the residents five days a week. The facility has large spacious rooms with wide 

hallways and ramps for easy wheelchair access. Located in the same building as New London Hospital, 

emergency medical care is literally only seconds away. From the linen tablecloths in the dining room to 

daily one-on-one companionship and social activities, we make the William P. Clough Extended Care Center 

like home. The residents don’t live in our facility. We work in their home.

Physician Practices are located in New London Hospital. Services offered range from Primary Care to 

General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Audiology, Dermatology, Urology, Podiatry, 

Neurological and Neurosurgical Services. Pediatrics Services are provided in the Medical Associates 

Building on the New London Hospital campus. 

Newport Health Center 

Located in Newport, the Newport Health Center was completely renovated and expanded in June of 2003. 

The center offers Primary Care, Gynecology, Podiatry, Pediatrics, Occupational Health, Laboratory, X-ray, 

Mammography, Physical Therapy, and Sports Medicine services. The Center has extended hours on 

Mondays and Wednesdays for evening appointments.

INTRODUCTION

Located in the Medical Associates Building, the New London Pediatric Care Center (NLPCC) is a patientfocused 

medical practice specializing in pediatrics and adolescent health care for the Dartmouth-Lake 

Sunapee Region in collaboration with Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD). The goal of NLPCC is to 

provide high quality health care with an emphasis on preventive and primary care services. Pediatricians 

specialize in the sick and well care of children of any age, from infants to college. 

New London Hospital Sports Medicine 

and Physical Rehabilitation Center 

The Sports Medicine and Physical Rehabilitation Centers provide a wide range of services in coordination 

with other programs in the Lake Sunapee region. Services and programs are for people of all ages with a 

wide variety of conditions. State-of-the-art therapy and specialized services are provided. 

Rehabilitation services are located at New London Hospital and Newport Health Center in Newport.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT SERVICES 

New London Hospital’s Emergency Department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by physicians 

and nurses who are experienced in emergency medical care. The three-bed trauma room and five private 

exam rooms located in the upper level of the hospital are equipped to handle complex trauma, surgical and 

medical care, as well as routine emergencies. The emergency care services at New London Hospital work 

collaboratively with other facilities to ensure continuum of care for patients requiring transfer to a tertiary 

care hospital.

PRIMARY CARE 

Our primary care physicians (PCP’s) are located at New London Hospital, 273 County Road; and in 

Newport at the Newport Health Center, 11 John Stark Highway. PCP’s specialize in either Internal 

Medicine or Family Practice Medicine. Physicians who specialize in Family Practice have received training 

in treating and caring for the entire family from pediatrics to geriatrics. Internal Medicine physicians 

specialize in adult medicine. The primary care physician services provide high quality healthcare with an 

emphasis on preventive and primary care services. New London Hospital’s primary care service also has 

the ability to refer patients to specialists or diagnostic testing.

COUMADIN SERVICES 

Coumadin Services are designed to help patients manage anticoagulation medication. Once Coumadin is 

prescribed, it is very important to regularly check the medication's effect on the blood's clotting tendency. 

Offered in New London and at the Newport Health Center, the program is staffed by an experienced 

Registered Nurse Clinician who obtains International Normalized Ratio (INR) measurements using a fast 

and simple fingerstick method. Results are immediate, and any change of Coumadin dosage is made on the 

spot. Data from each visit including INR, patient assessment and dosage changes are sent to the referring 

physician the same day.

New London Hospital has two operating room suites and a special procedure suite offering traditional 

surgical services for both inpatient and same day surgeries. The operating room is staffed by highly trained 

surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and surgical scrub technicians.

The Radiology Department, in conjunction with Valley Radiologists Professional Association, offers routine 

radiology services, digital mammography, ultrasonography, MRI, 16-slice CT Scan, bone density analysis, 

and Digital Fluoroscopy. We offer radiological services at New London Hospital and at the Newport Health 

Center. 

DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY 

New London Hospital was the first in the State of New Hampshire to offer digital mammography. Digital 

mammography is accurate, fast, and offers greater flexibility and magnification for women with denser 

breast tissue. Breast images produced through computerization rather than X-ray film are clear, easy to 

read, and can be viewed within seconds. NLH also uses I-CAD which is a computer aided detection 

system. This provides a computerized analysis of a patient’s mammogram to supplement the radiologist’s 

interpretation. 

Our technologists are all registered radiologic technologists certified in mammography, and all films are 

interpreted by Board Certified Radiologists. 

We are an American College of Radiology accredited mammography site. 

ULTRASONOGRAPHY 

Our equipment is an ATL HDI3000 Ultrasound machine. All technologists are registered diagnostic medical 

sonographers. 

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (M.R.I.) 

The 1.5T MRI services are available one day every week and two days every other week.

HOSPITALIST 

A hospitalist is an internal medicine physician who specializes in the care of patients in the acute care 

setting. New London Hospital began a hospitalist program in August of 2004 designed to improve care for 

patients admitted to the hospital, as well as improve care for patients in the outpatient setting. Upon 

admission to the hospital as a medical patient, the hospitalist will manage all aspects of the hospitalization, 

including admission and discharge, ordering tests, lab work and coordinate care with specialists as needed. 

The hospitalist communicates care plans with the patient, the family and the primary care physician. The 

surgical specialists utilize the hospitalist for consultations on medical issues. The surgical specialist utilize

SKILLED/SWING BEDS 

Skilled/Swing Beds allow patients who need a short period of skilled nursing or rehabilitation services 

following discharge from an acute care setting to stay at New London Hospital, rather than being moved to 

an out-of-town nursing facility. Some patients may be transferred from another acute care facility for a 

short recovery period prior to returning to their home. 

SOCIAL SERVICES 

This department provides Social Services to the inpatient population, ambulatory setting, and extended 

care residents. Collaborating with the health care team, patients, their families and the community, Social 

Services provides a continuity of care that promotes a smooth transition from the hospital to home or elder 

care setting. 

WILLIAM P. CLOUGH EXTENDED CARE CENTER 

“The residents don’t live in our facility. We work in their home.” More than words, these thoughts reflect 

the way we work at The William P. Clough Extended Care Center of New London Hospital. Our 58-bed 

facility is small and our staff-to-resident ratio is higher than many other elder care facilities. A group of 

three hospitalists (medical doctors with a special interest in geriatrics) provides on-site care to the 

residents five days a week. There is never a lengthy ambulance ride to a distant hospital or confusion due 

to unavailable medical records, as emergent care with the New London Hospital Emergency Services is in 

the same building.

SKILLED CARE PROGRAM 

The Skilled Care Program is designed as a transitional program for patients following surgery or treatment 

in the hospital. Fifty-six percent of our skilled care residents are able to return to their home environment.

of any source of health insurance. New London Hospital also participates in the New Hampshire Health 

Access Network, a group of hospitals, doctors and other health care providers in New Hampshire that 

work together to help children and adults when they can’t afford the health care they need.
