Bennett might have added gang violence, prostitution, unwanted pregnancies,<br />
abortion, and prison records. With so much against them, what can<br />
these youth do but fail Many commit suicide. Others reach for stronger<br />
drugs, cocaine and crack. The evils of these drugs is so much in the news that<br />
little need be added here.<br />
With so much evidence to prove the harmfulness of tobacco and drugs it<br />
is surely high time for all sensible, reasonable men and women to give up<br />
these costly, health-destroying habits. And for all who love God and desire<br />
to present their bodies “a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,” this<br />
becomes an urgent imperative. No one who regards his body as the temple<br />
of the Holy Spirit could deliberately destroy it with harmful substances.<br />
Certainly he won’t want to influence children and youth to do so.<br />
But how to break the habit<br />
Medical authorities have made these suggestions:<br />
When you decide to stop, stop. Do it at once. Make a complete break.<br />
Destroy every evidence of the habit, including cigarettes, cigars, ashtrays,<br />
lighters, and all drug paraphernalia.<br />
Get professional counseling. There are many local therapists to help<br />
you overcome smoking. The Seventh-day Adventists have helped<br />
tens of thousands with their Five-Day Plan to Stop Smoking, now<br />
known as Breathe-Free. They’ll help you, too, if you ask. Or join a<br />
self-help group like Narcotics Anonymous or Cocaine Anonymous.<br />
More effective still is earnest prayer for divine help. Tell God about your<br />
desire and your resolve. <strong>Open</strong> the door of your heart heavenward, and the<br />
Holy Spirit, flowing in, will bring you both strength and victory.
