but it is like upsetting a solid cube of granite. It is just as big one way as the<br />

other; and when you have upset it, it is right side up, and when you overturn<br />

it again, it is right side up still. Every little while somebody blows up the<br />

<strong>Bible</strong>; but when it comes down, it always lights on its feet, and runs faster<br />

than ever through the world. They overthrew the <strong>Bible</strong> a century ago. In less<br />

than a hundred years, said Voltaire, Christianity will have been swept from<br />

existence, and will have passed into history… But the word of God ‘liveth<br />

and abideth for ever’ ” (Will the Old <strong>Book</strong> Stand p. 11).<br />

Said Jesus 1900 years ago: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words<br />

shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35). At that moment nothing seemed more<br />

improbable. Yet time has proved the accuracy of His prediction. The synagogue<br />

in which He so often preached crumbled into ruin with the passing<br />

centuries; of the Jerusalem in which He walked, not one stone is left upon<br />

another; but His words remain to this day in the Holy Scriptures. As one<br />

commentator has written: “His words have passed into laws, they have<br />

passed into proverbs, they have passed into consolations, but they have<br />

never ‘passed away.’ ”<br />

If perchance, in spite of all the evidence offered above, you still have<br />

some lingering doubt whether your <strong>Bible</strong> is indeed God’s <strong>Book</strong>, consider<br />

this last impressive fact. Unlike any other book, this one is welcomed by<br />

the honest in heart in all the world. It has universal appeal. Its message<br />

is for all people.<br />

Many books, when translated, lose their original emphasis. Often the purpose<br />

of the author is lost altogether. Not so with the <strong>Bible</strong>. The Author’s<br />

message can always be understood in any language. It never loses its lifegiving<br />

power. Wherever it goes a river of life flows with it. It has a strange<br />

reforming influence, changing people’s lives, filling them with courage and<br />

hope, and helping them to live aright.<br />

Wonderful <strong>Book</strong>! Not only has God’s hand been over it down the ages,<br />

but His hand is over it now. Divinely inspired in the long ago, it has been<br />

divinely preserved-for you.
