Director’s note
I have always adored the music of Godspell. It was one of the few musical
theatre CDs that I could listen to straight through without skipping at least one of
the songs. When began the task of directing Godspell I knew the music had to be
strong but that wasn't all. This production was about so much more than the music.
The real goal of this project was to create a sense of community within the
cast. This community would be lead by Jesus and his right hand man, John the
Baptist. Each member of the community had to fully experience their own journey
to or away from Jesus.
In order to better paint this picture of community I used what I knew best, the
theatre. There is no other place I’ve ever worked or can even imagine that
brought such wildly different individuals together to work tirelessly toward a
common goal. From this thought came the idea that we would all enter the bare
stage as an acting troupe lead by Jesus (the director) and John the Baptist (the
stage manager). The troupe has entered from a time unknown and a space that
could be an old theatre or the remains of a circus. Either way, what is important
to them is the message they have to get across.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my cast who has worked so
hard to bring the pictures in my head to life. I thank them for their patience, enthusiasm,
kindness, commitment and unwavering ability to make me laugh. I
must thank Bonnie Macloud who has not only made this production happen but
has taught me so much in the process. Also, I thank Dana Guidroz for her encouragement
and perspective. You are all the salt of the earth.
So much work has gone into the creation of this production by so many people.
I hope you enjoy, have fun, and learn your lessons well!
