Presents
The
Children’s
Hour
By Lillian Hellman
Directed by
Renee Balencie Saussaye
March 5– 21, 2010

Director’s note
Words. Words are very powerful things. Words can praise, honor,
congratulate, comment, observe, exaggerate, mock, ridicule, scorn,
demolish, devastate and destroy. Words, once uttered and heard by
others, can be retracted but cannot be forgotten. The damage has
been done.
“The Children’s Hour”, written in 1934 by world-renowned author
Lillian Hellman, is a serious tale about how false words and lies, when
used maliciously, can cause great harm to others. Ms. Hellman was
born in New Orleans and split most of her childhood between New
Orleans and New York. Throughout her adult years, she was linked to
many left-wing causes. She appeared before the House Un-American
Activities Committee in 1950, and as a result, was blacklisted by the
Hollywood movie studios for many years. Ms. Hellman was very liberal
for her time, so it comes as no surprise to me her choice as the
theme of the lies told in this play.
My thirty plus years involvement in local theatre has concentrated
heavily on musicals and comedy, so I don’t have a lot of experience in
the drama genre. I approached directing “The Children’s Hour” as a
challenge and an opportunity to expand my horizons. This extremely
talented group of actors has certainly exceeded my expectations, and
I sincerely hope that we have at least met yours. Enjoy!
Renee Balencie Saussaye
Melissa Ogren-Benson (Karen Wright) Melissa, a Ginny Award winning actress,
started her acting career in the first grade and has loved being onstage ever
since. She was most recently seen as Chris Gorman in this season’s SLT production of
Rumors and at Luke’s Brisket and Broadway in Love, Sex and the IRS. Melissa was
nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy for her role as Amanda in Private Lives by
Gambit Magazine’s Big Easy Awards in 2007. Melissa and her husband, Kirk, directed
last season’s very popular Little Shop of Horrors. Although she misses having him on
stage with her for this show, she is thrilled to be working with her daughter Penny
and pleased to be directed by Renee….again.
Suzette Ferrari, nee Songy (Martha Dobie) Suzette is an appellate
attorney and former teacher. She last appeared on the SLT stage "many
moons ago" when she was a teenager. Suzette is thrilled (and terrified) at her
Gabrielle, and her parents for indulging her love of the theater, and to Renee
for this opportunity.
William J. Saussaye (Joseph Cardin) William was last seen on the SLT
stage as Sancho in Man of LaMancha. He has been a member of the SLT community
serves on the SLT board as Vice President of Marketing, would like to thank
his wife for her loving support and direction. William is always thankful for
the opportunity to participate on stage with wonderful and talented people,
and this show is no exception. William gives thanks to God in whom all
things are possible.
Julie Vorus (Mrs. Amelia Tilford) This is Julie’s fourth appearance on
the SLT stage. Previously she was seen in Plaza Suite, Steel Magnolias and
Noises Off. She has performed in over 45 plays in Michigan and Louisiana in
roles ranging from Bobbi Michelle in Last of the Red Hot Lovers to Mother
Julie dedicates her performance to her husband and number one fan,
Professor Bill Vorus.
Judy Rushton (Lily Mortar) Judy is a retired librarian. She has been
seen on the stage at Slidell Little Theatre in Hotel Paradiso, Steel Magnolias,
Rose Kennedy (Agatha) Many SLT newcomers remember Rose mostly for her
role as SLT’s box office chairperson for 5 ½ years, but she did start here as a performer…
back in 1974. She’s served in numerous capacities across the years, including
actress, stage manager, light technician, set decorator, producer, director and
board member. She thanks Renee for allowing her to “get her feet wet” once again
on stage.
Myra Duffour (Mary Tilford) is a seventeen year old senior who has had
enough experience with evil in high school to be able to play it well. She
survived that dark time by having two strong women at her back: her
mother, Sherry Rowland, and her theatre mother, Julie Faust. Love and Bubbles!
Gabrielle Ferrari (Peggy) Gabrielle is extremely excited to be Peggy in
The Children's Hour with her fantastic mother and so many of her friends.
This is her second show at SLT, the previous one being Godspell. She would
like to thank Mrs. Renee, all her friends and her wonderful and talented
mother, who has been supporting her from the very beginning.
Penny Metzger (Catherine) Penny can’t say she’s been around the theatre
since she was a baby, but she can say the time she has spent here has been
some of the most fun. She is very excited to have her very first speaking role
in her second main stage production. She is very happy and excited to be
with such a great cast, and would like to thank them all, as well as her parents.
Jenna Losh ( Lois) This is Jenna's first main stage production at SLT. She
has done YATS and several plays at Northshore High. She is having a gay time
in this show where some really queer things go on, but there will be more on
that later.

Jenna Grant (Evelyn) Jenna is fifteen years old and is in the ninth grade.
The Children's Hour is her second main stage show at Slidell Little Theatre.
She was last seen as Watchman 1 in Much Ado About Nothing on the SLT
stage. She has been acting for many years and enjoys it very much. She
would like to thank Ms. Renee for casting her and her fellow actors for being
so great!
Courtney Stephens (Helen) Courtney is 14 years old and a freshman at
Slidell High School. She has been in talented theatre for 6 years and is so excited
to finally be in her first main stage production at SLT! She would like to
thank her parents, especially her mother for being her chauffeur. She would
also like to thank all her amazing friends, the new and not so new. She loves
you all and wants to thank you for your support. She is ecstatic to be a part of
The Childrens Hour!
Anna Gowin ( Rosalie) Anna would like to thank her parents and all her
theatrical friends for their support. She would also like to thank Mrs. Renee
for her first acting opportunity. Anna would love to be in more plays in the
future. Just so long as they are not musicals, that is!
Valerie Aucoin (Janet) Valerie is a freshman at Slidell High School. This is
her third main stage production including A Christmas Carol and The Sound
of Music. She has also participated in YATS for two years as well as Christmas
YATS. She would like to thank Mrs. Renee for this wonderful opportunity.
She would also like to thank her family and friends for always believing in her.
Caroline Gelvin (Leslie) Caroline has been acting since the age of five, but
took a three year hiatus to focus on her studies. Recently, she was in Beauty
and the Beast with Slidell High School as a chorus member. Aside from acting,
she enjoys playing her ukulele, music, and reading. Caroline is happy to
make The Children's Hour her seventh play.
Chris Milligan (Grocery Boy) is a 14 year old student at Slidell High
School. He loves entertaining and performing for varieties of audiences. His
last debut on the SLT stage was a part of the ensemble in Godspell. He hopes
to pursue his acting, singing, and music career in a few years. He would like
to thank his wonderful family, his friends, and his directors for their support.
