Last fall, Cushing Academy dedicated
its newest dorm, Schottland
House, named for the Schottland
family, whose generous donation
made its construction possible. The
dorm sits on the site of the former
Mary Hare barn and included a
renovation of the faculty apartment
and the addition of new student
rooms.
“Susan and Peter’s vision in
creating a new dormitory to house
senior girls and a faculty family
has been guided at every step by
their commitment to the vital role
that dorm life plays in the Cushing
residential experience,” said
Headmaster Tracy. “… They have
seen firsthand that the friendships
among students and the studentteacher
bonds that are formed in
the dorm play a very important role
in the daily life of our boarding
students. The Schottlands set out
to design a space that would reflect
and nurture that important sense
of community, and this wonderful
dormitory is a result of their vision
and generosity.”
Following the ceremony, residents
gave tours to guests, showcasing
the many highlights such as the
large common space, outdoor patio,
sink and vanity in each room, radiant
heat flooring, air conditioning,
and extensive renovations in Mary
Hare House for faculty members.

Filling empty Bowls
A group of Cushing pottery students,
along with their teacher
Joan Hathaway, are working to feed
members of the Ashburnham community
who might otherwise go
hungry. The group created 75 colorful
bowls; for $5, supporters create
an ice cream sundae and then keep
the bowl they choose. The group
raised more than $300 for the Ashburnham
Community Church Food
Pantry. “This was a great opportunity
for the art students to see that
their work can be used for a good
cause and to learn to give something
of themselves to charity,” said
pottery instructor Joan Hathaway.

In December 2011, a multi-purpose
space that had been used for informal
gatherings, meetings, and
other types of events, was renovated
and named for Tom Poti ’96 whose
contributions to the space made
the renovation possible. Along
with friends, family, faculty, and
alumni, several of Poti’s Cushing
teammates and coaches gathered to
celebrate during the reception and
formal dedication of the redesigned
suite. Back on his home ice once
again, Poti dropped the puck for the
varsity boys hockey game vs. Avon
Old Farms, which resulted in a
hard-fought 4–4 overtime tie.
Since its rededication, the space
has been the site of a number of
events including a reception honoring
Cushing’s girls ice hockey team
and a reunion event.
