Water Reclamation
As the pioneer of the commercial reclamation
of water from municipal and industrial
wastewater effluent in Singapore, Sembcorp
is capable of turning effluent into high-purity
water for power and steam generation, as well
as process industry operations. The company
is also the developer, owner and operator of
one of the world’s largest water reclamation
plants in Singapore. This plant, the Sembcorp
NEWater Plant, was the winner of the 2010
Global Water Intelligence Global Water Awards
“Water Reuse Project of the Year” and received
the “2010 WateReuse International Award”
from the WateReuse Association.
Wastewater Treatment
Applying a suite of wastewater treatment technologies ranging from filtration
to biological treatment, Sembcorp has the expertise to integrate these
technologies into a seamless system, managing and customising the processes
to effectively treat wastewater of different profiles from both industrial and
municipal customers. With the technical expertise and operational scale in
treating multiple streams of complex industrial wastewater, Sembcorp can
treat all types of wastewater directly from source, without the need for any
pre-treatment on the part of its customers.
Desalination
Sembcorp develops, owns and operates large-scale integrated power-anddesalination
plants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, which use
various seawater desalination technologies such as Multi-Stage Flash and
Reverse Osmosis. Its facility in the UAE, the Fujairah 1 Independent Water and
Power Plant, is the world’s largest operating hybrid desalination plant. It also
received a Distinction at the 2007 Global Water Intelligence Global Water
Awards “Power and Water Deal of the Year”.
Sembcorp owns and operates facilities capable of treating high organic
concentration industrial wastewater with Chemical Oxygen Demand of more
than 14,000 milligrammes per litre and high salinity industrial wastewater
with salinity of up to 50,000 milligrammes per litre. The company is also
the developer, owner and operator of China’s first facility treating high
concentration industrial wastewater without pre-treatment required by
customers. This facility in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province was conferred
Honour Awards in the International Water Association’s Global as well as
East Asian Regional Project Innovation Awards 2010.
6 7
Focus on Process & Technology
Sembcorp’s global facilities consist of diverse models of water and wastewater
treatment plants. Sembcorp uses its extensive experience to apply best available
technology and the most appropriate solutions to meet customers’ needs.
Technologies and solutions adopted include:
n Anaerobic biological treatment processes
for complex industrial wastewater
n Low fouling, high flux membranes for increased water recovery
n Energy-efficient seawater desalination
Membrane Bioreactor
Technology
Sembcorp is the first company to apply
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology
for the treatment of high salinity
industrial wastewater in Singapore.
Advantages of MBR:
n Produces consistently good quality
effluent
n Uses less chemicals and energy
n Plant footprint can be reduced
by up to about 25% compared to
conventional aerobic systems
n Reduction of sludge generation
Application of MBR technology
in Singapore
Track Record in Applying Advanced Technologies
Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment Systems
Since 1999, Sembcorp has been applying the anaerobic wastewater treatment
system developed by the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2009 winner, Professor
Gatze Lettinga. Sembcorp has applied the Expanded Granular Sludge Bed
(EGSB) technology at its facilities both in Singapore and China and is to-date the
only company to have used this technology in Singapore.
Advanced Membrane Systems
Sembcorp pioneered the commercial reclamation of municipal and industrial
wastewater effluent into high purity reclaimed water in Singapore using
advanced membrane systems such as microfiltration and reverse osmosis.
In addition, the company has developed and now owns and operates the
Sembcorp NEWater Plant, the largest NEWater plant in Singapore and one of
the world’s largest membrane-based water reclamation plants.
Advantages of EGSB:
n
n
n
Capable of treating high concentration industrial wastewater, Sembcorp’s
facilities are capable of treating industrial wastewater with Chemical
Oxygen Demand (COD) above 10,000 milligrammes per litre.
Sludge generation can be reduced by up to approximately 10 times
compared to conventional aerobic systems
Potential for the recovery of renewable energy
