Hello Neighbors,
I can’t believe how time flies. I can remember
bringing each one of my children home from the
hospital. Of course, Justin didn’t come home as
early as the other two, but I can remember dragging
Johnnie, age 2, to the hospital again and this time bringing Justin home. Johnnie said,
“Is this the day, mom” I said yes! He said, “Do I have to share my toys” That was
18 years ago. Now, Justin is graduating, Johnnie is turning 20 this month, a junior in
college, and Jessica turns 16 on the 9th. Where did the time go
I can remember everyone telling me, the older you get, the faster TIME FLIES!
Boy, that is not a joke. It seems like we get a magazine out, and it is time to deliver
again. I am certainly ready to slow down a little. Rush here, rush there. I know God
did not intend on us rushing our lives away. (Ok, here is where I had to stop and rush
to get my daughter.)
Psalm 131 says,
“My heart is not proud, LORD, my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content. (NIV)
Basically, slow down and be content with what God has offered us daily. Do
not concern yourself with things that do not matter, but enjoy today. This is very
hard for me. I am always rushing around, and I usually miss out on the beauty God
has created around me. As Christians, we need to understand that God is still in
control. Rushing things can sometimes lead to poor judgment, and lead us into bad
decisions. Swiftness is one of the characteristics of sin in the Scripture. Whether it is
the adulterous woman in Proverbs 7 who runs to a young man or the depiction of the
wicked rushing to shed blood, “my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on
their paths; for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.” – Proverbs 1:15-16
(NIV)
There is an urgency that sin thrusts upon us. Sometimes it is better to purposely
wait, and pray about it. God did not intend on us to remain idle, but He also did not
intend on us to rush the days He has freely given us. My hope for you is that you take
time today to stop and smell the roses.
Sincerely,
Raina C. Troxell
F.A.I.T.H’s The Power House for Kids
1K/5K/10K on May 5th
The Power House for Kids is a child advocacy center in Northeast Georgia
that serves Stephens, Habersham and Rabun County. Other counties
are served upon request. It is the goal of The Power House to ensure
that children disclosing abuse are not further victimized by the intervention
systems designed to protect them. Children and teens coming to the Power
House may be victims of abuse and/or neglect, or may have witnessed a serious
crime.
The Power House is able to offer a "kid-focused" coordinated team response to
allegations of abuse by bringing together agencies and professionals involved in the investigation
and intervention system. The multidisciplinary approach means that The Power
House brings Law Enforcement, Child Protective Services, Medical Professionals, Forensic
Interviewers, Mental Health Professionals and Advocates into one location, reducing the need
for children and families to navigate a sometimes difficult and confusing system
All services are free and confidential to the child and his/her caregiver.
The Power House for Kids is a program of FAITH in Rabun County, Inc. and accredited member of the National
Children's Alliance and Children's Advocacy Centers of Georgia.
In 2011 alone, 393 children were served by The Power House for Kids. The number one reason for referal was sexual
abuse, with physical abuse as the second largest category of service rendered.
In 2009 The Power House for Kids saw 228 NEW cases, 2010-315 NEW cases, and in the year of 2011 there were 359
NEW cases. New cases refer to those that were previously unserved victims.
In an effort to help continue these services there will be a Road Race on May 5, 2012. All proceeds will go to The
Power House for Kids. The race will start at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Toccoa. The 1k begins at 8:30 am and the 5K
and 10K begin at 9 am. Call 706-599-6339 for more information.
CORNER
Hart County 4-H Successful At Project Achievement
Hart County 4-H’ers competed successfully
at Junior/Senior Project Achievement,
held at Rock Eagle near Eaton-
CORNER
ton, the weekend of March 9-11, 2012. There
are 39 counties in the Northeast District and
five-hundred sixty-five 4-H’ers, representing
grades 7-12, were at Rock Eagle to compete
for Project Achievement. Twenty-eight of
these were from Hart County, returning home
with seven Hart County 4-H’ers placing 1st,
eleven Hart County 4-H’ers placing 2nd, and
one Hart County 4-H’er placing 3rd.
Hart County 4-H also had three members
to campaign and run for NE District Junior
and Senior Boards. Senior 4-H’ers Abby Harrison
and Anna Holcombe campaigned for
Senior Board.
Finishing up a term on Senior District
Board were Hart County 4-H’ers Lucas Holcombe
and Wilson Pierce. Lucas is the son
of Billy and Christy Holcombe of Canon, and
Wilson’s parents are Mike and Linda Pierce
of Hartwell.
Also campaigning for the 2012-2013 District
Junior Board was Hart County 4-H’er
Zach Tellano. Zach is a home-schooled 7th
grader, the son of Ruth and Randy Daniel
of Hartwell. He was elected by his peers to
serve as Vice-President of the Northeast District
Junior Board. The Georgia 4-H Northeast
District Board of Directors plans and
organizes all district 4-H events and Board
Members serve as Representatives of the
Northeast District over the next year. David
Rice, Hart County 8th grade 4-H’er, is completing
his year as serving as President of the
Northeast District Junior Board. David, the
son of Charles and Caren Rice of Hartwell,
presided over junior assemblies during the
weekend.
One Hart County Senior 4-H’er, Holly
Verdell, placed First in her project, Food Fare,
and is now eligible to compete for “Master”
Status at 4-H State Congress to be held in
July in Atlanta. Holly prepared a turkey bean
chili recipe for the judges. Four other Hart
County Senior 4-H’ers, Abby Harrison, Ashley
Hollinshead, Anna Holcombe, and Lucas
Holcombe are invited to compete at State
Congress as Sweepstakes winners. Sweepstakes
winners are those who place 2nd in a
project which has a minimum of eight competitors.
Project Achievement requires 4-H’ers to
complete a Portfolio of the past year’s project
work and leadership and community
service. During the actual competition, each
4-H’er must present a prepared demonstration
on his/her selected project before judges.
The objectives of Project Achievement are
for the student to acquire an understanding
of the subject matter in a given project area;
develop skills in researching, assembling and
presenting information; stimulate interest in
continuing project work through 4-H experiences;
provide opportunities for members to
develop and enhance qualities of integrity,
sportsmanship, cooperation, poise, and selfconfidence;
and help 4-H’ers develop skills in
leadership and communication.
There is a $100 cost per child to compete
at Project Achievement. Hart County 4-H
covers the total amount for each child and
these monies are received through the fundraising
projects of 4-H and from 4-H donors.
Are You Really Ready For The Water
with
Rick
ith
By: Capt Rick Owen
R
With over thirty years of fishing
Lake Hartwell the one
thing that I often wonder
every time I see a fishing boat or
pleasure boat launched from one of
Lake Hartwell’s many boat ramps
is “ Are they really ready for the water”
It never fails when the weather
warms up, the boats get pulled out
of the garages or uncovered in the
backyard and off to the lake they
go. Many times without ever checking
the gear that is required for safe
boating. I’ve seen more tragic accidents
in my many years on the lake than
I care to remember, and many that I have
tried to forget. I would suggest lack of care
or alcohol contributed too many of these
accidents, and they were all preventable if
the right safety gear had been in working
condition. It’s heart breaking to me to be
headed to a boat ramp and see lifejackets
blown out of boats on the side of the road.
I think every time that I see this that the
lifejackets that are still in the boat are
most likely in very poor condition and
never taken seriously.
As a father, grandfather and a fishing
guide, I can assure you that those
who step into my boat are not going to
be handed a seven dollar life jacket
that has been stored away for years
in the event that a lifejacket becomes
necessary. Safety gear in your boat
should be the best that you can afford
and always checked and verified that
it is in perfect working condition
several times during a boating season.
It will always be my hope that
you will never need the first thing
that is required by law in your boat,
but if you do, I pray that it works. I
could tell you a few stories of safety
gear that have failed and these stories
have many tragic endings. I guess
over the years, I have become very observant
to my surrounding when I’m on the
dangerous, and anytime I see a child in a
dangerous position, such as letting a three
year old sit in your lap while driving down
I-85 at seventy miles and hour. This is not
a good idea, and if you pass a Georgia State
Trooper while doing this your day will not
be a good one. Well I will get off my soap
box and let you in on a secret.
This article is being written because
today I saw a little kid loading up in a boat
at the marina with a bright orange (adult
size) seven dollar life jacket that she could
have slipped right out of at any time during
their day on the water. Now I make a
habit to keep several extra life jackets in
my boat that are much safer and without
a thought of making anyone mad, I passed
one over to the boaters. Luckily, I was not
told to mind my own business and they
willingly took the life jacket and thanked
me for it. They put it on this child who
thought it was really cool that she had a
new kid size life vest that looked much
nicer on her and would provide her for a
safe day on our beautiful lake. Now I was
able to take my trip out without having to
worry about this little girl.
So this short article is not so much
about fishing, even though the fishing
is great right now. It’s much more about
planning a fun day on Lake Hartwell that
does not turn out tragic because something
as simple as not having a safety
check list or making sure that water safety
gear was in good working order. My boat
has been used on several types of DNR investigations
or searches/rescue attempts
where proper safety rules and laws were
not followed. It is not a good feeling to
pull up in a dark cove to people in the water
and holding onto what’s left of an ice
chest, and yes this is one of those things
that I have tried to forget.
Let’s make this year a fun year on Lake
Hartwell and check and double check our
gear. If you ever need a hand in checking
your gear or have questions about quality
safety gear please call me. I will always
make myself available to help make
this year a safe year on the lake. Yes, I’m a
fishing guide and I love to fish and I love
to take people fishing, but I also want to
spend the day on the water without my
phone ringing about an emergency I need
to rush to on the lake. If this does happen,
I want to pull up and see everyone is safe
because their safety gear on board was in
good working condition.
This year will be an exciting year for
Rick’s Guide Service. We will have many
different events going on this year and
new equipment to fish from. You will not
recognize us on the water this year due
to many changes. The Instructional Trips
and regular guide trips will be much different
as many things have been upgraded
to offer newer classes and upgraded guide
trips. We will still offer the only Instructional
Trips on Lake Hartwell and as always
we will continue to provide Gift
Certificates for that special gift for your
loved ones. Corporate trips are still available
with as many boats that are required
to fish any big groups. Kids 12 and under
still fish free with parents and we still
guarantee fish. With today’s high gas prices
hiring a guide is a good investment for a
fun filled day of fishing on Lake Hartwell.
Log onto www.ricksguideservice.com and
win a free trip this year. To book a guide
trip or get the most up to date fishing report
Antiques: The Modern Day Treasure Hunt
In today's world, everything that’s old
can be described as antiques and generally
speaking that’s quite true. A product
is considered to be an antique if it is over a
hundred years old or is rare enough to have
some value. In other words, these are old
items that are in limited supply.
An antique is something collectible. It
may be a piece of antique furniture that you
want to collect to enhance the look of a room,
or a piece of antique pottery to decorate a
corner cupboard, or some antique books,
antique camera and photographs, antique
jewelry, antique money, antique car, antique
clocks, or antique watches that you want to
hand down to your grandchildren but the
items must be rare enough to be considered
an antique. The others are just secondhand
goods junk. Most people have a common misconception
about an antique: the older they
look, the more antique they must be. Appearance
has nothing to do with it, just because
a piece looks like it came out of grandma's
attic does not necessarily mean that it’s an
antique. The value of an antique is based on
demand due to suitability and limited supply.
By Tom Lange
Crazy For
a n t i q u e s
Most people become fascinated in an
antique for two reasons; either they have an
interest in collecting antique purely for personal
enjoyment and are willing to shell out
money for antique restoration or they inherited
it from a family member. The most common
are antique pottery, antique car, antique
furniture, antique books, antique camera and
photographs, antique clocks, antique money,
antique jewelry and antique watches. However
they came about it, everyone wants to
be sure of one thing that what they buy or
inherit will escalate in value as time goes by.
That is what antique collection is all about.
There are two main principles that apply
when collecting an antique: The first is
to know everything that you can about the
antique that interests you and second is to
obtain them at the lowest possible price. Doing
so will not only give you satisfaction and
enjoyment, but at the same time you will also
be assured that your investment will appreciate
in value.
Some people only developed an interest
in antiques because they inherited an item
or a whole house full of antiques from a relative.
The dollar signs started to appear and
they began their hunt for some antique appraisals
and antique auctions. But what most
failed to consider is that much of what Great
Grandmother had is probably just junk, unless
she was a seasoned collector who’s into
antique restoration or an expert in antique
appraisals.
It’s true that people could have bought a
piece of furniture to decorate their home a
long time ago and that furniture, if it were of
fine quality, would now be worth something.
But only a professional appraiser can guarantee
that, and appraising costs about $100-
$150 an hour. So if you are keen on bringing
your item in an antique auction and contemplating
about asking someone how much an
item is worth, be prepared to shell out a few
bucks for the information. Appraisers charge
so much because they shoulder the lion’s
share for insurance companies and lawyers
settling estates. Although appraising is not
an exact science, it still requires an appraiser
to do lots of research and then prepare a detailed
report that’s acceptable in a court of
law.
Ideal Weight Loss
If your New Year’s Resolution was to lose weight and get healthy, but you are already getting discouraged Ideal Weight
Loss of Habersham can help. Lila Wiese opened Ideal Weight Loss on December 26, 2011. She was looking for an avenue
to lose weight quickly and safely. She also wanted to maintain muscle while burning fat. After finding out about Ideal
protein, her world changed and so can yours. We sat down with Lila to learn more about this amazing product.
HTN Magazine: What made you
decide to start your new business
Lila: I believe most people desire to be
healthier but don’t know how to go about
it. They’re accustomed to taking prescriptions
for symptoms that many times
can be alleviated by addressing their root
cause. When I learned of the additional
health benefits people achieve while losing
weight on Ideal Protein, I realized this
is something I could be passionate about.
HTN Magazine: What sets your
business apart from other businesses in
the area
Lila: Ideal Protein is unique. We’ve
done plentiful research of other types of
diets and are unable to find any compara-
ble to Ideal Protein when it comes to addressing
the CAUSE of having gained the
weight, and letting one’s health get away
from them, while providing a method to
lose the weight and address the risk factors
associated with metabolic syndrome.
HTN Magazine: What type of
merchandise or services are you offering
the area
Lila: (1) Education on how to lose
weight and get healthy in a safe, effective
way, and (2) the method to achieve
it including the necessary high quality
protein products and supplements. The
Ideal Protein process has a beginning, and
an end. It is not a lifetime process. Once
the desired results are achieved, dieters
phase out and are finished.
HTN Magazine: How much planning,
renovation, work was involved in
opening your new business
Lila: Starting a new business has been
a learning experience and we’ve been
blessed by many helpful people along the
way. One aspect of preparation for me included
spending a week in Louisiana with
my brother, a doctor, who’s had over 3000
people complete the Ideal Protein protocol
in his clinic. Observing the day-today
process as well as meeting many of his
dieters and listening as they shared their
experiences, and told me what they like
most about Ideal Protein confirmed for
me that I’m going in the right direction.
SUMMER.
without using drugs or injections. This diet forces
the body to burn only fat, while preserving muscle
mass. The average weight loss is 3-7 pounds per week
and our system is 100% effective for people who
follow the rules. We’ll teach you how to keep it off!
Lila: My husband and I have two
Cotton States Insurance
Cotton States Insurance has provided for the insurance needs of residents in Franklin
County and surrounding communities for more than 50 years. After Paul Crawford
and Bobby Sullivan retired from their Cotton State offices, Ryan Swails decided
to follow in their tradition by opening an office in Royston to continue providing
excellent customer service to the area. We sat down with Ryan to talk about his new
agency, and what Cotton States has to offer the community.
HTN Magazine: What made you decide
to start your new business
Ryan: Paul Crawford and Bobby Sullivan
operated Cotton States agencies in Royston
and Carnesville, respectively. Their integrity
and genuine love for people has produced lasting
relationships with so many in the community.
That legacy and Cotton States’ commitment
to excellence was what drew me to work
with Cotton States.
HTN Magazine: What sets your business
apart from other businesses in the area
Ryan: Cotton States has always offered a
variety of quality insurance products. As an affiliate
of COUNTRY Financial, Cotton States
offers a wide range of insurance and financial
services. As a financial representative, I help
people set and meet their own financial security
goals. Everyone’s definition of financial
security is different. For some, it may mean
planning for retirement. Others may be more
focused on protecting their home and family
now. By providing both insurance and finan-
cial solutions, I can help people develop a tangible
plan that works for them.
HTN Magazine: What type of merchandise
or services are you offering the area
Ryan: In addition to providing auto, home,
and life insurance, we offer disability income
insurance, long-term care insurance, farm insurance
and commercial insurance. There are
also many financial services products available.
From IRAs to annuities, we have great options.
HTN Magazine: How much planning,
renovation, and work was involved in opening
your new business
Ryan: Cotton States had an established
office located on HWY 29 across from the
Roystonian. Paul and Teresa Crawford have
poured so much into the Royston Cotton
States office and managed its operations for
many years. Teresa, our agency assistant, is the
rock of our office.
HTN Magazine: Tell us about your family,
hobbies and interests outside of the business
Ryan: My wife Ginny and I recently added
a new member to the family. Afton Swails was
born December 1, 2011. She is the light of our
lives. We’re active members of Lifesprings
Community Church in Franklin Springs. I’m a
volunteer firefighter with the Franklin Springs
Fire Department and serve as Chairman for the
Royston Downtown Development Authority.
I recently completed two triathlons and would
one day like to participate in an Ironman.
HTN Magazine: Is there anything else
you think would be interesting to our readers
about your new venture
Ryan: The personal connection that comes
from meeting people and discovering their
interests and needs is what matters the most
to me. I love it when people stop by to chat
or simply review their policy. When you talk
/ Ann Pitts Sister Mary. Leo - Ashley Tucker Father Virgil Manly Trott - W. J. Harrell III Sister. Mary Regina (Mother
Superior)- Ann Pitts “Stage Manager” - Margaret O’Neal.
Sister Amnesia will be coming to the Hart County Community Theatre as part of the promotional tour for her debut album, I
Could Have Gone to Nashville. This wacky nun was first introduced in Hartwell fifteen years ago in the original Nunsense which
was also written by Dan Goggin. As you may recall, her real name is Sister Mary Paul, but she was nicknamed Sister Amnesia after a
crucifix fell on her head and she couldn’t remember who she was. Joining Sister Amnesia for the tour in Hartwell will be Sister Robert
Anne (Kelley Higginbotham), Sister Mary Leo (Ashley Tucker), and two new friends; Father Virgil Trott (Wil Harrell) who is Sister
Mary Leo’s real life brother - a Franciscan priest with his own country radio show, and Sister Mary Wilhelm (Victoria Young) the
Superintendant of Nursing at the convent.
Since March 1, this cast has been dedicating three nights a week to rehearsals preparing to learn the 24 new musical numbers and
the faced paced one-liners. During Act One you will be introduced to each character with a re-appearance of Sister Mary Annette (a
nun puppet)who sneaks in to shake things up and ends with a hilarious finale, a salute to the patron Saint of Nursing, Saint Catherine
Laboure. In Act Two there will be opportunities for audience participation to help raise funds to send Sister Amnesia to Nashville for
an awards ceremony and to sing along during a tribute to the Grand Ole Opry. As part of both acts, Mother Superior calls in to check
to see how the show is going. Along the way you will learn the roots of each of the characters and how they each chose the life they
now live. The show ends with a foot-stomping, hand-clapping finale called, Do Unto Others.
Joining our cast is Wanda Cavitt on the piano. Put on your cowboy boots and join us for a fun evening as HCCT presents Sister
Amnesia’s Country Western Nunsense Jamboree.
TLC Tips for Lawn and Garden Maintenance
Whether you’re considering the
resale value of your home or are
simply resigned to doing maintenance
projects to keep your house in good
condition, your lawn and garden could
certainly benefit from some TLC of the
home improvement variety.
The exterior of your house commands
most first impressions, and even mild
winters inflict seasonal damage. If you
don’t know where to start, a home improvement
project checklist may help.
Consider the following lawn and garden
maintenance tips from home and garden
experts at HGTV and MarthaStewart.
com:
Start gently. Remove piles of dead
leaves from the lawn. Not only will your
grass grow greener, a clean lawn helps
maximize fertilizers and pesticides. Don’t
fertilize your grass too early though. April
is the general benchmark; any sooner
might result in yellow spots.
Check gutters for leaks and debris.
Loose gutters cause improper drainage, so
water can collect in basements and crawl
spaces. Downspouts should point away
from the foundation of the house and
must be clear of all debris.
Start a roof fund. It’s a good rule of
thumb to check your roof for rotted, buckled,
loose or missing shingles after winter
because summer sun will only worsen the
damage. Since roof maintenance is expensive,
it’s also smart to start a fund or consider
replacing your shingle roof with long
lasting metal roofing.
Remove piles of wood or debris
stacked near the home. It should be kept
far away from the foundation and stacked
18 inches off the ground. These preventative
measures help keep insect pests from
exploring your home.
Don’t strain yourself, and stay hydrated.
This might be the first time you’ve
done any heavy lifting or spent hours in
the sun for months. Remember to drink
plenty of fluids, take breaks and stretch
your muscles. If you suffer from backaches
and muscle strains, keep some relief like
Absorbine Jr. (www.absorbinejr.com) on
hand. Its herbal ingredients and uncanny
ability to ease muscle and back pain make
it a must-have for yard work.
Call a professional to clean your
AC unit. Heating and cooling experts recommend
an annual servicing since clean
coils work more efficiently. When the
summer’s blazing heat drives you indoors,
your family will appreciate having an AC
operating at peak levels.
A
lot of people would love to have a
front yard garden that has the most
incredible hydrangeas or azaleas
growing beautifully. This dream takes a
lot of time and effort, however, so if you
are among those that want to achieve it,
you will have to work hard starting today.
Starting small is definitely the way to
go, especially if you are a novice in this
particular craft. One of the things you
can concentrate on first is the choice in
plants you wish to grow, i.e. flowers, trees,
or even vegetables. It is definitely wise
to choose plants that do not require too
much maintenance but if you are confident
enough about your growing skills,
roses, orchids, and bonsai trees make for
great options.
Getting the soil ready is essential in
order that you can grow beautiful things
in the garden. Using organic fertilizers is
Top Tips for Garden Landscaping
the best way to go because they do not
pose any threat to the environment or to
human health. Becoming familiar with
different types of organic fertilizers like
horse manure or steer manure will help
you do a great job in preparing the garden
soil for excellent growing conditions.
Naturally, a rich and well decorated
lawn is what you would want which calls
for different garden landscaping ideas
such as fountains, fences, and lighting.
The idea is to incorporate as much of your
personality into the design so as to make
it a little haven that is not only beautiful
to look at but is also a quintessential reflection
of you.
Outdoor furniture is a very common
garden landscaping feature which also
happens to be quite practical. If you have
the space to accommodate a full set, you
might as well go for it, especially if you
wish to have a proper area to accommodate
your guests during the day when the
sun is out but it is not too hot.
Proper illumination is a large part
of decorating your garden. The patio is
where it all starts so you might want to
invest in a great pair of sconces or wall
lamps that illuminate the space and highlight
naturally beauty. Garden lights are
recommended not only for practical purposes
but also for highlighting the best
features of the area even at night.
In order to keep your garden in great
shape, it is necessary to understand its
needs such as regular and controlled watering,
tilling, mowing, and weed removal.
Watering has to be season and weather
appropriate because gardens which are
too dry or too wet will never thrive so
make certain that you adjust accordingly.
