The Perfect Venue 32
Hello Neighbors,
It is that time again. Spring is on its way. The older I get, the
more I do not care for cold weather. I really do love how the seasons
change in northeast Georgia, especially fall. However, I do not like freezing rain or
snow unless it is Christmas day. We just had snow in some of our area this past weekend
and my kids begged us to go find more. We hopped in our car, and headed north.
My daughter Jessica took some great photos of our area. She is very talented and has
a great eye for taking photos. She is extremely creative, and a wonderful artist. It is funny
how all my children have different talents. Justin is the sweetest, kindest young man you
could ever find. I have people all the time tell me he is absolutely awesome, and they just
love him to death. Johnnie is extremely smart, and finishing his third year of college. He is
taking mechanical engineering, and some of the stuff he is taking looks like Greek to me.
God certainly makes us all different, and gives us all our own special gifts.
I guess if I have a special gift it would be talking to people. My kids ask me all the time
after talking with someone in a store, “Do you know them” I usually say no. I love people,
and getting to know them. Yes, I guess that is part of selling advertising, but it is more
than that for me. Most of my closest friends, started out as an advertisers. They really
love me, and were very worried about my health issues. I want to take this opportunity to
say a special thank you to them. I am feeling better. I still have more tests to run, but my
medication is helping now. I also want to thank those readers who emailed and called to
check on me. I didn’t realize I had so many friends that I have never even met.
God is so amazing. He puts the people we need here on earth to help one another
through trying times. As the Bible says, we are aliens to this earth, but one day all our
Christian brothers and sisters will meet again in heaven. Have a wonderful March, and
God bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
LL Farm Events
Michelle and David Gibbs opened LL Farm Events in October 2012. This unusual wedding and event venue is the
perfect place to host your next special occasion. The rustic refurbished barn can hold over 600 people. We sat down to
speak to Michelle about how the barn went from one idea to another.
HTN Magazine: What made you decide
to refurbish an old barn
Michelle: We bought an old farm a few
years ago. My husband, being a contractor,
decided that he and his crew could take
the old barn on the property and renovate
it into something unique. We first thought
it would make a great place to hold horse
shows and other horse events. After friends
began to look at the progress, they said what
a perfect place for a wedding.
HTN Magazine: What sets your business
apart from other businesses in the area
Michelle: It is a barn, but it actually
looks like an old western town inside. There
is a saloon and hotel with rocking chairs on
the front porch. It is over 40,000 square feet,
and we even have a 5,000 square feet dance
floor with old fashion string lights above.
There are two huge fireplaces and an old
41 Ford pick-up truck for ambience. There
is also a place upstairs with 2 bedrooms
where the bridal party can stay. It has a fully
equipped kitchen and bar to enjoy h’orderves
before the big event. It also has two full bathrooms
where everyone can get ready.
HTN Magazine: What type of services
are you offering the area
Michelle: We offer a custom unique
venue designed for all events. We have the
perfect setting for a wedding fit for a princess.
Approved caterers have a perfect place
in front of the hotel and saloon to set up the
perfect reception and food area.
HTN Magazine: How much planning,
renovation, work was involved in opening
your new business
Michelle: We worked for almost 2
years renovating the historic old barn. Every
piece of wood is refurbished and hand cut.
We wanted to keep the primitive authentic
look of the old barn.
HTN Magazine: Tell us about your
family, hobbies, and interests outside of the
business.
Michelle: We have four horses and a
mini donkey. They can even be brought over
to have photos taken with the bride and
groom. We love animals, and the farm life.
We have another building and flooring business.
Between the events and the contracting,
we keep busy.
HTN Magazine: Is there anything else
you think would be interesting to our read-
www.hometownneighbors.com
ers about your new venture
Michelle: Our daughter Tiffany was
the first one to use the facility for her own
wedding. We had to work feverishly to
get it ready for the big day on October 27th,
2012. We would like to have the venue used
for music videos, and other filming in the
area in the near future. We are conveniently
located between Cleveland and Gainesville.
We want to work with our bridal parties to
ensure that their day is the most perfect and
memorable day of their lives.
Vickery Place Personal Care Home
Jay and Jennifer Beck opened Vickery Place Personal Care Home on February 10th of this year. Jennifer, who
has worked in the medical field for over 20 years, has always had a passion for the elderly, who are often underappreciated
and neglected. Now that their children are grown, they realized they have the perfect home to start their
own personal care home, and moved forward with their plans of a quality personal care home in Lavonia.
HTN Magazine:
What made you decide
to open your own personal
care home
Jennifer: The house
was actually our home
for many years before
we converted it into
the personal care home,
and we wanted to give
it back to the community in a meaningful
way. We also saw a need for quality assisted
care options, and hope to make a
difference in the community by providing
these services.
HTN Magazine: What sets your
business apart from other businesses in
the area
Jennifer: We have an amazing staff.
Each staff member is
smart, compassionate
and energetic – they
are the foundation of
our home and we know
everyone will appreciate
them as much as we
do! The house is classic
and unique, and is in a
great location. We are in
downtown Lavonia, which is such a great
community, and only 2 miles from the
new hospital.
HTN Magazine: What type services
are you offering the area
Jennifer: The staff of Vickery Place
is available 24/7 and is trained to assist
residents with activities of daily living
(dressing, bathing, grooming, etc.). They
We’ve moved to historic
downtown Lavonia
also provide healthy, home cooked meals,
housekeeping and laundry services, fun
and therapeutic activities that promote
physical, mental and social well-being,
medication supervision, and facilitation of
supportive medical services. We also have
quality amenities including an indoor spa
for residents to enjoy.
HTN Magazine: How much planning,
renovation, work was involved in
opening your new business
Jennifer: It has taken 2 years to prepare
for opening. The house has been adapted
to suit to the physical and comfort needs
of senior adults, including a jetted, walkin
tub. We also had to obtain re-zoning
from the city of Lavonia, and complete the
state application and licensing process.
HTN Magazine: Is there anything
Jennifer: Due to recent changes in
Georgia legislature, there are defined
differences in assisted care facilities.
Personal care homes are usually small
and offer personal services, including
assistance with self-administration of
medications. Assisted living facilities
are larger and administer medications
by a certified medication aide. Nursing
homes offer skilled nursing care and
have a physician on staff at all times. We
are excited to bring a loving and caring
One of the greatest symbols of commitment
and love that married
couples have for one another is
a wedding ring. When two people wear
wedding bands, it means that there is an
endless bond that can never be broken; it
forms a deep bonding between a husband
and his wife.
The exchange of wedding rings between
two people getting married began
thousands of years ago. At that time,
though, the man used the ring as a gift to
the woman. When the woman accepts
the ring, it means that she is officially the
man’s property. During that time, only
women used wedding rings. Men began
using them around the 20th century, during
the Second World War, to show others
that he belonged to someone else.
One of the most important parts of
marriage is selecting the perfect
wedding ring. Couples always want
to purchase the best as it symbolizes their
love and union. Some couples spend a
lot of money for the best wedding rings.
Many rings are made of platinum or gold,
which are two of the most costly metals.
Others add precious stones like diamonds
to their rings. The most expensive rings
are made diamond studded platinum.
Since not many people can afford such
rings, some jewelry stores have offered lay
away services to couples who really want
pricey rings. The importance of wedding
rings should not be ignored, since most
people believe getting married happens
only once.
These special rings are placed on the
left hand’s fourth finger. This is so because
it was believed that the finger has the vein
dba AuntBee’s Place
A Flea An’tique
of love, which
is connected directly to the heart, therefore,
wearing a ring given by a lover on
that finger is linking him or her to one’s
heart. Some people nowadays do not believe
this, but for the romantic at heart,
the tradition still prevails and millions of
couples still follow the custom of wearing
the matrimonial rings. Wedding rings are
not only worn by married people to show
others their civil status. It is also done to
create a bond between the wife and her
husband.
Engagement rings also have an interesting
history. When a man gives a woman
an engagement ring, he conveys deep
emotions of love and eternal commitment
and happiness. In fact, the ring denotes
eternity between the ring’s giver and its
ecipient. Engagement rings have
been identified by various names. Also,
not all rings are made of stunning gems
and precious metals. In the Greek culture,
these rings were given as a token
of affection and care and were gifted
before marriage. However, it is sometimes
given as a symbol of friendship
and not necessarily a prerequisite to
marriage.
In Ancient Rome, their version of
an engagement ring had carved keys
on them, which is to symbolize the
woman’s right to own half of everything
her husband owns after marriage.
The sentimental people, though, think
that the key may have been for her husband’s
heart.
In the present day, engagement
rings and wedding bands are often
engraved with the wife and husband’s
names along with the anniversary date.
Some of these rings are custom-made
and intricately designed to add more
value to one of the most cherished
items anyone can have in a lifetime.
Freeman Martin releases Woodshed Wisdom, Vol. 1
Imagine growing
up in a clapboard
farmhouse without
running water,
without an inside
bathroom, where the
sole source of heat
was a two-sided fireplace
and a woodburning
cook stove
in the kitchen, and
where air conditioning
was non-existent.
Now, with all the
technological advances
of the twenty-first
century that
allow us to communicate
instantly with
people all over the world, it’s no surprise
that we, as the most blessed nation on the
face of the earth, are light years removed
from the simpler time in which people
looked to and depended on God’s Word
for answers to life’s questions. Only history
will determine if these
powerful distractions
have led to the extinction
of the wisdom of the
woodshed.
In Woodshed Wisdom,
Vol. 1, Freeman
Martin gives his personal
account of how he experienced
God and His
Word while growing up
on a southern farm in the
1950’s. While reading, you
will be transported to a
humbler way of life and
you will find yourself desiring
a simpler daily communion
with God over
the static of modern life.
ENDORSEMENTS:
Freeman Martin is a gifted man of God
who is able to encourage, challenge, and
make you think and laugh with the wit
and wisdom God has given him. You will
be blessed by his words of inspiration
and homespun humor. --Dr. David Gallamore,
Senior Pastor, Rock Springs Baptist
Church, Easley, SC
Freeman Martin has hit it out of the
ballpark with Woodshed Wisdom, Vol.
1. With a healthy dose of humor and rare
spiritual insight, Woodshed Wisdom, Vol.
1 serves up a delightful slice of American.
Every visit to the woodshed will simultaneously
tug at your heart and make you
want to stand and applaud. This book is
a must-read! - J. Gresham Barrett, former
U. S. Congressman, South Carolina, Third
District.
Jesus perfected the art of parable telling
– earthly stories revealing heavenly truths.
In Woodshed Wisdom, Vol. 1, Freeman
Martin follows that tradition, plucking
heavenly truths for today from his wellworn
memories of growing up in Appalachia.
– Houston T. Hawkins, Colonel,
USAF (retired).
After a forty-year career in radio and
Final Voyage
with
Rick
By: Professional Fishing Guide and Instructor Rick Owen
Every now and then we all run
across that special person in our
lives that just seems to make a difference
in how we look at things. That
person becomes someone special to us
even to the point that they go beyond
friendship and just become a part of our
family. One of those people was not only
a friend to me, but also one of the guides
who helped me over several years operate
Rick’s Guide Service. Billy McLeroy, who
fished many guide trips for me and many
of our HomeTown Neighbors, lost his life
to an inoperable brain tumor right before
Thanksgiving. I finally found the courage
to write this article on a man who knew
how to really live life to its fullest. You
will see in this month’s article a picture
of Billy with a young man that fished with
us last year, right before his illness. It was
my great privilege to take part in Billy’s eulogy,
and it was easy to let his family and
friends know that Billy finished this life
with a “winning attitude” which set the
ith
stage for his “heroic finish.”
If you had been on Main
Street in Anderson South
Carolina on November
14th, you would have seen
something that most people will never
see again. As we loaded Billy’s coffin into
the back of a brand new boat, he was carried
to his final resting place. On that day
Brian Kelly, who has helped me run Rick’s
Guide Service since January of 2006, was
also Billy’s best friend. He was there to
finish this last voyage with Billy. Now to
say that Brian and Billy were best friends is
an understatement. Brian took care of Billy
from the minute that Billy was diagnosed
in February with the brain tumor. He
was there right up until Billy took his last
breath on this side of eternity. The two
spent Billy’s final moments alone in the
hospital room with Brian by his bed side.
The day we took Billy to the grave side was
a bitter cold day, but Brian would not let
our friend take this Final Voyage alone.
Brian climbed into the boat
and wrapped an arm around
Billy’s coffin for the long
R
cold ride to the cemetery.
Every day Brian or I take
the time to remember some
of the fun times we both
spent fishing with our good
friend and fellow guide Billy
McLeroy. We both had a
nickname for him that always
brought a smile to Billy’s face. We
called him Big Fish McLeroy! Now that’s
something that every fisherman would like
to be called or remembered by. I’m writing
this article not only as a memorial to Billy,
but to also take a few minutes to reflect
on just what is important in life. It seems
like everyone has so much going on in their
lives that family and friends, as well as
fun times and creating memories, are old
school ideas. Let me help remind each of
you that the people that we love and those
that we consider special in our lives need
telling. The memories that we create today
are gifts that no one can ever take away
from us.
I have had a wonderful God given gift
to be able to get out on Lake Hartwell with
families and friends, and to take part in
helping create some of those memories.
I can still hear the laughter of some of
these people that have also left us, but
their memories remain on. Billy McLeroy
had a huge influence on my life and
the lives of many others.
As a tribute to him, I will not follow
up this article with anything other than
a quote from one of my favorite authors
and pastors, Dr. Charles F. Stanley who
wrote. “Everyone makes decisions that
impact his or her life – and the consequences
of these decisions spill over
into the lives of others. That is why
you can’t say, It’s my own life, and I
will do with it whatever I please. You
and I can’t live that way because we all
have influence.” Billy was a huge influence
on all those that his life touched.
He will be missed by all of us that knew
and loved him. At his eulogy, I made a
closing remark that I have heard several
times. “Nothing is lost when you know
where it is.” We know where our good
friend and fellow guide has gone, and
we will see our friend again someday.
On that day we will all sit down and
remember those great memories. Rest
in peace my friend. www.ricksguideservice.com
Local eye doctor, Dr. Jing Dong of
Georgia Center for Sight, is now
offering a new bladeless cataract
surgery.
Alcon’s LenSx laser, a bladeless, computer-controlled
laser allows Dr. Dong
to plan and perform cataract surgery to
exact individualized specifications not
attainable with other surgical methods.
By adding computer control to key
steps of cataract surgery the LenSx laser
helps ensure the highest precision surgical
incisions.
The LenSx laser is the most technologically
advanced option for cataract
surgery.
Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s
natural lens that tend to occur in people
ages 55 and older.
Half of all Americans have them or
have had cataract surgery by age 80.
Cataracts can make objects appear
blurry, make colors look dull, and cause
trouble seeing at night.
In traditional cataract surgery, doctors
make an incision, break up, and remove
the natural lens by hand.
While all human eyes share the same
basic anatomical structure, every eye is a
bit different in terms of size, depth, curvature
of the cornea and other key features.
The LenSx is laser assisted surgery and
FDA approved to perform the most vital
steps of cataract surgery by using realtime
imaging technology.
Using the images, measurements and
data it provides, the ability to plan and
perform cataract surgery to exacting
specifications is not attainable with traditional
surgery.
Georgia Center for Sight is excited to
announce this latest high tech procedure.
If you are in need of cataract surgery or
just have questions about this new procedure,
please feel free to contact one of the
convenient offices located in the area. The
friendly staff of Georgia Center for Sight
will be happy to assist you.
Hartwell Liberty Tax Service
Tim Strickland opened Hartwell Liberty Tax Service on January 8th, 2013. We sat down to speak with Tim about his
new business and his plans for the future.
HTN Magazine: What made you
decide to start your new business
Tim: When I contacted Liberty Tax service
about franchise opportunities, I was
impressed with their commitment to customer
service.
HTN Magazine: What sets your
business apart from other businesses in
the area
Tim: We offer a relaxed atmosphere,
where kids are welcome. We even have a
kids’ room with activities and offer complimentary
refreshments while you wait
for your tax return. We offer a variety of
incentives for customers including” a refer
a friend program” where customers
receive $50 cash for each referral, as well
as cash in a flash, where customers receive
$50 instant cash just for preparing their
taxes.
HTN Magazine: What type of
merchandise or services are you offering
Time To Get Your
Hands Dirty!
the area
Tim: Liberty Tax will provide a special
promotion during the month of March
for military personnel, fire fighters, law
enforcement, teachers and healthcare professionals.
HTN Magazine: How much planning,
renovation, work was involved in
opening your new business
Tim: I had been planning on opening a
new location for my tax service after last
year’s partnership, when I received a flyer
in the mail about Liberty Tax Franchise
opportunities. I attended a seminar in
Atlanta GA where I met John Hewitt, the
CEO of Liberty Tax. After talking to him
and hearing their commitment to customer
service I was excited to become part of
the team as it fit into my plan of upholding
excellent customer service. I didn’t really
have to renovate my new office as much
as having to decorate and prepare an office
that would have a welcoming family
atmosphere.
HTN Magazine: Tell us about your
family, hobbies, and interests outside of
the business.
Tim: I have been a post man in Hartwell
GA for the last 23 years. I have been professionally
doing taxes for 10 years. I have
been married to my wife Sue for almost 11
years; we are raising our 6 year old granddaughter
Jaden. In my off time, I enjoy
traveling and playing softball.
HTN Magazine: Is there anything
else you think would be interesting to our
readers about your new venture
Tim: Our Goal is to provide superb customer
service and a friendly, comfortable
atmosphere for having your taxes prepared.
Come in and try us out, meet our
friendly and qualified staff, we offer a different
yet enjoyable experience while we
Giving plenty of gifts
to a newly betrothed
couple has been tradition
for many centuries
and is the main reason why
the wedding gift business
has remained profitable
despite changing business
conditions. A wedding gift
is a tangible representation
of support and love for the
couple to help them start
their new life on a positive
note.
Wedding etiquette dictates
that guests officially
invited to the wedding ceremony and reception
are required to send a gift, regardless
if they attend or not. However, those
invited but live very far and have not been
in close contact with the couple for several
years have the option not to follow
the tradition.
Gift Giving Etiquette
A guest requested to attend a shower
should present a gift but does not have to
if he/she cannot attend the event. A close
family member of friend will likely send
something despite not attending.
Ideal wedding gifts can range from expensive
china, gift certificates, camping
equipment, gardening tools and household
appliances. Choosing a gift should
be an enjoyable activity except for those
“shopping-challenged”. The gift registry is
very helpful in determining what to give
the couple. Couples usually register for
gifts with two or more retail stores, online
shops or even brokerage houses and
travel agents.
Normally, a gift should be delivered to
the bride’s home before the wedding addressed
to her. Gifts sent after the wedding
should be addressed to the couple’s
new home or the house of the bride’s parents.
Some cultures require the gift to be
brought to the wedding home instead of
sending it ahead of the ceremony.
Guests may send the gifts immediately
after they receive the invitation. Guests
who do this gift giving practice will spare
the couple from worrying about how to
transport huge packages coming from the
reception site.
Proper etiquette dictates that the
couple should immediately write a thankyou
note to the sender upon receiving the
wedding gift and before the fourth month
after the wedding at the most.
FAQ’s
When does the gift need to be sent
The gift for the bride should be given
before the wedding or shortly after the
couple marries. If the gift cannot be sent
anytime soon, it must be sent before three
months after the ceremony. This goes
against hearsay that it can be sent even
shortly before the first year anniversary of
the newlyweds.
Are the gift options limited to those
listed in the registry
No, a registry only serves as a guide
for the gift giver. Any wedding gift will as
long as it comes from the heart.
Is there an ideal budget for a wedding gift
The budget is entirely up to the gift
giver. One’s love for the bride and groom
should serve as the basis on how much a
gift should cost.
Is money an appropriate gift
Money is the traditional gift in some
cultures. Giving a gift certificate to their
favorite store is a nice option if you are
comfortable giving cash.
The Perfect Venue for Your Special Day
It should be noted that planning about a
venue for your wedding should be given
the same importance as talking about the
manner in which the wedding is going to be
conducted. Your wedding location determines
guest size and sometimes the dress of the
guests. Such as, if you choose a wedding venue
outside during the fall, you may encourage
your guests to dress warmly or to bring a coat.
A summer beach wedding, guests may dress in
more comfortable clothing and wear sandals
instead of heels. However arranging for a very
special venue is something that will add more
fun to your wedding.
Remember that if you do decide to book
your wedding at a beach or venue miles from
most of your guests, you need to take these
into consideration. Lodging, activities, food
and relaxation time for your guests are just a
few things that need to be arranged before the
guests arrive.
Outdoor activities could take into account
a cooking exhibition, boating excursion,
games and other activities. Also think of so
many other options in which the scenery of
your wedding venue can be replicated in your
activities. For example, you can device a game
such as that of “passing the shell”. This is a
type of activity in which a shell is passed over
from person to person. Every person pretends
to listen to one or two counseling from the unknown.
This counseling is later made open to
the public and offered to the couple. This can
either be expressly done in the presence of the
entire guest or it can be later written and presented
as a gift to the couple.
There are many local venues where numerous
activities can also be included in your wedding.
The real idea at the back of such events
is to add some more fun to your party. For example,
you can plan games at your reception
that involve your surroundings. You could
orchestrate a treasure hunt where guests will
find clues of where the happy couple is going
on their honeymoon.
Your venue sets the stage for what type of
wedding you can plan. From a farm, Victorian
mansion to a community event center, you can
design the perfect wedding celebrating your
new life together.
Every new bride wants
to be a
princess!
