Hello Neighbors, 

It is that time again. Spring is on its way. The older I get, the 

more I do not care for cold weather. I really do love how the seasons 

change in northeast Georgia, especially fall. However, I do not like freezing rain or 

snow unless it is Christmas day. We just had snow in some of our area this past weekend 

and my kids begged us to go find more. We hopped in our car, and headed north. 

My daughter Jessica took some great photos of our area. She is very talented and has 

a great eye for taking photos. She is extremely creative, and a wonderful artist. It is funny 

how all my children have different talents. Justin is the sweetest, kindest young man you 

could ever find. I have people all the time tell me he is absolutely awesome, and they just 

love him to death. Johnnie is extremely smart, and finishing his third year of college. He is 

taking mechanical engineering, and some of the stuff he is taking looks like Greek to me. 

God certainly makes us all different, and gives us all our own special gifts. 

I guess if I have a special gift it would be talking to people. My kids ask me all the time 

after talking with someone in a store, “Do you know them” I usually say no. I love people, 

and getting to know them. Yes, I guess that is part of selling advertising, but it is more 

than that for me. Most of my closest friends, started out as an advertisers. They really 

love me, and were very worried about my health issues. I want to take this opportunity to 

say a special thank you to them. I am feeling better. I still have more tests to run, but my 

medication is helping now. I also want to thank those readers who emailed and called to 

check on me. I didn’t realize I had so many friends that I have never even met. 

God is so amazing. He puts the people we need here on earth to help one another 

through trying times. As the Bible says, we are aliens to this earth, but one day all our 

Christian brothers and sisters will meet again in heaven. Have a wonderful March, and 

God bless you and your family.

LL Farm Events 

Michelle and David Gibbs opened LL Farm Events in October 2012. This unusual wedding and event venue is the 

perfect place to host your next special occasion. The rustic refurbished barn can hold over 600 people. We sat down to 

speak to Michelle about how the barn went from one idea to another. 

HTN Magazine: What made you decide 

to refurbish an old barn 

Michelle: We bought an old farm a few 

years ago. My husband, being a contractor, 

decided that he and his crew could take 

the old barn on the property and renovate 

it into something unique. We first thought 

it would make a great place to hold horse 

shows and other horse events. After friends 

began to look at the progress, they said what 

a perfect place for a wedding. 

HTN Magazine: What sets your business 

apart from other businesses in the area 

Michelle: It is a barn, but it actually 

looks like an old western town inside. There 

is a saloon and hotel with rocking chairs on 

the front porch. It is over 40,000 square feet, 

and we even have a 5,000 square feet dance 

floor with old fashion string lights above. 

There are two huge fireplaces and an old 

41 Ford pick-up truck for ambience. There 

is also a place upstairs with 2 bedrooms 

where the bridal party can stay. It has a fully 

equipped kitchen and bar to enjoy h’orderves 

before the big event. It also has two full bathrooms 

where everyone can get ready. 

HTN Magazine: What type of services 

are you offering the area 

Michelle: We offer a custom unique 

venue designed for all events. We have the 

perfect setting for a wedding fit for a princess. 

Approved caterers have a perfect place 

in front of the hotel and saloon to set up the 

perfect reception and food area. 

HTN Magazine: How much planning, 

renovation, work was involved in opening 

your new business 

Michelle: We worked for almost 2 

years renovating the historic old barn. Every 

piece of wood is refurbished and hand cut. 

We wanted to keep the primitive authentic 

look of the old barn. 

HTN Magazine: Tell us about your 

family, hobbies, and interests outside of the 

business. 

Michelle: We have four horses and a 

mini donkey. They can even be brought over 

to have photos taken with the bride and 

groom. We love animals, and the farm life. 

We have another building and flooring business. 

Between the events and the contracting, 

we keep busy.

you think would be interesting to our read- 


ers about your new venture 

Michelle: Our daughter Tiffany was 

the first one to use the facility for her own 

wedding. We had to work feverishly to 

get it ready for the big day on October 27th, 

2012. We would like to have the venue used 

for music videos, and other filming in the 

area in the near future. We are conveniently 

located between Cleveland and Gainesville. 

We want to work with our bridal parties to 

ensure that their day is the most perfect and 

memorable day of their lives.

Jay and Jennifer Beck opened Vickery Place Personal Care Home on February 10th of this year. Jennifer, who 

has worked in the medical field for over 20 years, has always had a passion for the elderly, who are often underappreciated 

and neglected. Now that their children are grown, they realized they have the perfect home to start their 

own personal care home, and moved forward with their plans of a quality personal care home in Lavonia.

Georgia legislature, there are defined 

differences in assisted care facilities. 

Personal care homes are usually small 

and offer personal services, including

are larger and administer medications 

by a certified medication aide. Nursing 

homes offer skilled nursing care and 

have a physician on staff at all times. We

forms a deep bonding between a husband

Every now and then we all run 

across that special person in our 

lives that just seems to make a difference 

in how we look at things. That 

person becomes someone special to us 

even to the point that they go beyond 

friendship and just become a part of our 

family. One of those people was not only 

a friend to me, but also one of the guides 

who helped me over several years operate 

Rick’s Guide Service. Billy McLeroy, who 

fished many guide trips for me and many 

of our HomeTown Neighbors, lost his life 

to an inoperable brain tumor right before 

Thanksgiving. I finally found the courage 

to write this article on a man who knew 

how to really live life to its fullest. You 

will see in this month’s article a picture 

of Billy with a young man that fished with 

us last year, right before his illness. It was 

my great privilege to take part in Billy’s eulogy, 

and it was easy to let his family and 

friends know that Billy finished this life 

with a “winning attitude” which set the

If you had been on Main 

Street in Anderson South 

Carolina on November 

14th, you would have seen 

something that most people will never 

see again. As we loaded Billy’s coffin into 

the back of a brand new boat, he was carried 

to his final resting place. On that day 

Brian Kelly, who has helped me run Rick’s 

Guide Service since January of 2006, was 

also Billy’s best friend. He was there to 

finish this last voyage with Billy. Now to 

say that Brian and Billy were best friends is 

an understatement. Brian took care of Billy 

from the minute that Billy was diagnosed 

in February with the brain tumor. He 

was there right up until Billy took his last 

breath on this side of eternity. The two 

spent Billy’s final moments alone in the 

hospital room with Brian by his bed side. 

The day we took Billy to the grave side was 

a bitter cold day, but Brian would not let 

our friend take this Final Voyage alone.

and wrapped an arm around 

Billy’s coffin for the long

cold ride to the cemetery. 

Every day Brian or I take 

the time to remember some 

of the fun times we both 

spent fishing with our good 

friend and fellow guide Billy 

McLeroy. We both had a 

nickname for him that always 

brought a smile to Billy’s face. We 

called him Big Fish McLeroy! Now that’s 

something that every fisherman would like 

to be called or remembered by. I’m writing 

this article not only as a memorial to Billy, 

but to also take a few minutes to reflect 

on just what is important in life. It seems 

like everyone has so much going on in their 

lives that family and friends, as well as 

fun times and creating memories, are old 

school ideas. Let me help remind each of 

you that the people that we love and those 

that we consider special in our lives need 

telling. The memories that we create today 

are gifts that no one can ever take away 

from us. 

I have had a wonderful God given gift 

to be able to get out on Lake Hartwell with 

families and friends, and to take part in

helping create some of those memories. 

I can still hear the laughter of some of 

these people that have also left us, but 

their memories remain on. Billy McLeroy 

had a huge influence on my life and 

the lives of many others. 

As a tribute to him, I will not follow 

up this article with anything other than 

a quote from one of my favorite authors 

and pastors, Dr. Charles F. Stanley who 

wrote. “Everyone makes decisions that 

impact his or her life – and the consequences 

of these decisions spill over 

into the lives of others. That is why 

you can’t say, It’s my own life, and I 

will do with it whatever I please. You 

and I can’t live that way because we all 

have influence.” Billy was a huge influence 

on all those that his life touched. 

He will be missed by all of us that knew 

and loved him. At his eulogy, I made a 

closing remark that I have heard several 

times. “Nothing is lost when you know 

where it is.” We know where our good 

friend and fellow guide has gone, and 

we will see our friend again someday. 

On that day we will all sit down and 

remember those great memories. Rest
