25th IAU 100km
World Championships
Winschoten, Netherlands, 10 September 2011
Winschoten is a small town
about three hours from
Amsterdam that hosts many
races in conjunction with the
IAU World and European
Championships. The
Championships had a record
entry of 285 athletes from 34
countries and were run on a
10km loop course in warm
conditions (mid 20s C)
2008 World champion Giorgio
Calcaterra took the title after running
stride for stride with Fanie Matshipa
(RSA) until 40km. He then made a
decisive move and went on alone. His
winning time is one of several sub-
6:30 performances during his career.
Michael Wardian ran a more
conservative race compared to his
bronze medal finish last year. He
came from behind in the second half,
Garmins allowed
these are not used to
communicate (in accordance with
the IAAF policy review).
finishing fast and strong to take
silver. The race also doubled as the
European Championship and behind
Calcaterra Pieter Vermeesch (BEL)
took silver and two-time World and
European Champion, Jonas Buud
(SWE) took the bronze, finishing
seventh overall 6:52:19
In the women’s race, Marina
Bychkova (RUS) won the women’s
World Championship with a time of
7:27:19. She was followed by the
bronze medallist from the 50km
World Trophy Final Joanna Zakrzewski
(GBR) in 7:41:06. Lindsay Anne van
Aswegen (RSA) took the bronze
medal in her first international IAU
event in 7:42:05. Bychkova ran a
steady pace for the first 50km and
seemed to get stronger as the race
went on. She passed last year’s World
champion Ellie Greenwood (GBR) at
halfway and went on to win in
impressive style. Joanna Zakrzewski
ran conservatively and worked her
way through the field as the race
progressed to finish second overall,
while Lindsay Anne Van Aswegen did
not feature in the top five until
reaching 80km, but then worked her
way through on the last loop to third
place. Bychkova and Zakrzewski won
European gold and silver respectively.
Irina Vishnevskaya, fourth overall,
won the bronze.
IAU WORLD TRAIL
CHAMPIONSHIPS,
CONNEMARA, IRELAND
France took team and individual titles
in both men’s and women’s races. Race
day conditions were near ideal, with
sunny breaks and cooler temperatures
in the morning followed by warmer
temperatures in the afternoon.
Continued on page 41
“It was a good race for me because I won. My ankles swelled up for the
last 14km but I carried on for the team.
I will take a break, [to rest] my ankles. I also have three daughters and
I want to be with them. The French Championships are coming up but
if it is not possible for my ankle then I will not do the race.
I thought I could win from the start, apart from the ankle problem.. I
know Cecilia, and we were running back and fore throughout the race. I
really wanted to win. I think I need to get more speed.”
