3rd WMRA GRAND PRIX RACE
13th Int’l Grintovic MR Race, Kamink, Slovenia
The uphill mountain challenge was in such
difficult conditions that for safety reasons the
course was altered to protect runners from the
severe weather on this exhausting course. David
Schneider and Lucija Krkoc lead the Grand Prix
with 200 points from the three races so far: the
series is decided by the best four races of six.
perfect summer-picnic-feeling in Mayrhofen with
runners from more than 20 nations coming
together to run up Mount Penken.
The silver medallist from last year Azarya
Weldemariam won after a hard fight with the
recently-crowned five-time European Mountain
In the women’s race we had the revenge of the
27th World Mountain
Running Championships
Tirana, Albania, 11 September 2011
A welcome from the Albanian President and
Minister of Sport was backed up with five
hours of live television covering the opening
ceremony of the first ever world sporting
event to be hosted in Albania.
The athletes’ village in the beach resort of Durres
offered cool accommodation from the oppressive
heat that many struggled with on race day. Albania
has the highest average altitude in Europe - so is a
perfect fitting for the sport of mountain running.
Many struggled in the hot and humid conditions on
a varied and technically demanding course.
The men’s race (13.1km) included 750m of
ascent/descent). Four of the Ugandan team set a
fierce early pace, but five-time European champion
Ahmet Arslan (TUR) and Max King (USA) were
never far behind. The Italian team packed well,
starting steadily but then moving up the field as
the Ugandans started to slow in the midday heat.
Heat exhaustion got the better of the prominent
leader Ayeko as he ground to a halt less than
1000m from the finish. Max King finished fastest
to win from Arslan.
In the women’s race, over 8.8km with 500m
ascent/descent, USA took top honours with Kasie
Enman winning by more than a minute. After
trying to make the American team for the past five
years all of Kasie’s dreams came true on this
poignant date of 9/11. She became a first-time
mother in 2010 and her family were on hand to
cheer her to victory.
Junior Men:
(8.8km, 500m ascent/descent)
The Turkish team attempted to dominate with a
furious start, and had four runners in the top six
after the first climb. Columbian Saul Padua
Rodriguez bided his time on the first lap but
started to force the pace after two laps. Only the
dusty descent allowed Turkey’s Adem Karagoz to
pull away for a comfortable victory. Turkey did
dominate the team category with an impressive 12
points to Poland’s 22 with Italy taking the bronze
medals with 32 points.
Junior Women
4.5km, 250m ascent/descent
Slovenian Lea Einfalt impressed as she took the
world title and led her team-mates to bronze team
medals. Turkey took second and fourth places to
secure the team gold.
