RUTA DE LAS IGLESIAS 10km, ECUADOR
“The Path of the Churches” is a nocturnal 10km race
involving the entire city of Quito. Locals and tourists
gather to run or to join the fun as spectators in this
race that is also a celebration of culture and athletics.
6000 runners registered for the seventh edition.
At the start line the Special Olympics choir sung the
Quito anthem, starting a theme which is maintained
throughout the entire race. The sky is lit up with
fireworks and stars as the runners take off. Along the
way bands play typical Ecuadorian music and along
the route there are 10 beautiful colonial churches,
mostly from the 16th and 17th centuries, which stand
out against the starlit Andes sky.
There are all types of runners from the elite to
families and those in fancy dress. At the finish line the
celebrations continue as once again the fireworks fill
the sky and people reuniting with their families and
friends are everywhere to be seen. The night is vibrant
with an experience no one should miss and no one
will forget.

Harun Njoroge moved into top gear at 39km to claim
the men’s title. In the women’s race Tomoko Morimoto
overtook front-running Kaori Yoshida with just over
2km to go.
