World record
Patrick Makau set a new
world record of 2:03:38 in the
38th BMW Berlin Marathon
on 25 September.
It was Berlin Marathon’s seventh
world record in 13 years. The man
who set the previous two records, in
2007 and 2008, Haile Gebreselassie,
dropped back with breathing
problems at 27km as Makau
recorded a particularly fast 28th
kilometre, and then dropped out at
Two marathons will be held to mark
the 20th anniversary of the Jungfrau
Marathon in 2012, and twice the
usual number of entries will be
available. The World Long Distance
Mountain Running Challenge will
also take place in conjunction.
Jungfrau is the biggest Swiss
marathon and the world’s biggest
mountain marathon. Entries have
been snapped up very quickly in
recent years and many runners lose
out. But thanks to next year's
anniversary, and the "double" event,
8,000 starting places will be on offer.
The marathons will be held on
Saturday 8 September and Sunday 9
around 35km. One of the
pacemakers, Stephen Chemlany,
came through to finish second, over
four minutes behind Makau.
Florence Kiplagat won the women's
race in 2:19:44, the second sub-2:20
time this year after Mary Keitany’s
2:19:19 in London. World record
holder Paula Radcliffe came third in
2:23:46, behind local heroine Irina
Mikitenko (2:22:18) one year after
giving birth to her second child.
Women’s world road records
At the 2011 IAAF World
Championships in Athletics held
in Daegu, South Korea, IAAF
Congress changed the rule for
recognizing women’s world records
in road races. From 1 January
IAAF will only recognize times
achieved in women-only
competitions; performances
achieved in mixed races will be
referred to only as a “world best”.
This decision means that Paula
Radcliffe’s 2003 marathon mark of
2:15:25 will no longer be the world
record but a world best, and that
her 2005 time of 2:17:42 will the
world record.
The boards of both AIMS and World
Marathon Majors (WMM) believe
that the Congress decision does not
meet the requirements of road
running as a sport. Both AIMS and
WMM will acknowledge two world
records for women’s road running
events: those achieved in mixed
competition and those recorded in
women-only races.
[Note: Performances considered for
records, rankings and qualifying
purposes must be achieved in
accordance with IAAF Competition
Rules. These include rules on course
measurement, decrease in elevation
between the start and finish,
maximum distance between the start
and finish lines. An application for a
world record will only be considered
if the athlete concerned undertook
doping control at the event.]
