CASE STUDY: Downtown Flushing As evidenced by the Queens Heat Map (page 5), Downtown Flushing and its vicinity account for among the densest concentration of pedestrian KSI crashes in the borough. Between 2009 and 2013, there were 835 crashes in the area involving pedestrians, resulting in 80 severe injuries and 11 fatalities. Nearly three out of four residents of Flushing were born outside of the United States, with almost half coming from China and about 10% from Korea. Accordingly, about eight out of 10 Flushing residents speak a language other than English at home. Though Flushing’s employment rate is comparable to that of Queens overall, incomes tend to be somewhat lower, with nearly one-third of households earning less than $25,000 per year (vs 22% for Queens overall).
