Special issue of Hydropower & Dams
ICOLD 2011 will be the most significant event of
the year for the international dam engineering
profession; about 700 delegates are expected to
attend. In accordance with usual tradition,
the editorial team of Hydropower & Dams is
working closely with the National Committee of the
host country, Switzerland, to prepare a major
special issue of the <strong>Journal</strong> to commemorate the
meeting in Lucerne.
Switzerland, one of Europe’s pioneering countries
for hydropower development at the time of its
industrial development, is today renowned for its
major concentration of dam engineering expertise.
A ‘new wave’ of pumped-storage development is
also under way, with projects like Nant de Drance
and Linth Limmern under construction.
A wealth of information of interest for the dam
engineering profession worldwide is currently
being prepared for the special issue of
Hydropower & Dams, by experts from Switzerland,
and from some neighbouring countries.

Complimentary copies of the special issue will be
distributed to all delegates attending the Lucerne
Meeting, as well as to our international readership
worldwide. This issue of H&D thus represents one

New major dam and hydro projects are under construction in more than
10 European countries, with the largest amount of activity under way on
the Iberian peninsula and some southeastern countries. Meanwhile,

attractive source of reference on this current activity.

Special ICOLD issue of
Hydropower & Dams
79 th Annual
Meeting of ICOLD
Representatives of ICOLD’s 93 Member Countries will assemble
for six days of high level discussions at the Annual Meeting in
Lucerne. This will be one of the main highlights of the year for the
international dam engineering profession.
Meetings of the Technical Committees will focus on the
preparation of reports and bulletins which will advance the stateof-the-art
of dam engineering, and related topics such as finance,
economics, environmental aspects, and impacts of climate change.
‘Dams and Reservoirs under Changing Conditions’ will be the
subject of a one-day Symposium on 1 June. Four technical
excursions are offered on 2 June, and on 3 June the 79th
Executive Meeting will review the Commission’s current and
future strategy and activities.
An Exhibition will take place concurrently with the meetings.
Pre- and post-meeting study tours will give delegates the
opportunity to visit major dams and hydro/pumped-storage plants
in western, southern or eastern Switzerland.
Our special issue of H&D will be distributed to all participants.
A major focus of our special issue will be dam engineering
expertise, and current hydropower and dam developments in
Switzerland, as host country of the ICOLD Annual Meeting.
T<strong>here</strong> will also be papers from experts in neighbouring countries,
on topics of special relevance to ICOLD delegates.
Articles from Switzerland will focus on the following topics:
Dam monitoring and safety
• Dam monitoring as a basis for numerical back analyses using the
FE method
• Abutment stability assessment at the Hongrin arch dam
Sedimentation
• Swiss research on sedimentation management
• New sediment discharge gallery at the Solis dam
Refurbishment and upgrading
• Update on various projects w<strong>here</strong> dams are being heightened or
strengthened, such as Göschneralp, Serra, Les Toules, Spitallam
and Seeuferegg
Pumped storage
• Updates on the Hongrin-Léman capacity increase; status reports
on Nant de Drance and Linth Limmern, and plans for the Lago
Bianco scheme
Materials for dams
• Asphalt concrete lining for a snow production reservoir
• The use of geomembranes at some European dams
The pan-European section of the special issue will include
articles from leading European manufacturers on: Pelton turbine
technology; French research on the piping flow erosion process
in hydraulic structures; and, reports from a recent dam safety
conference in Lisbon, Portugal, and a workshop on labyrinth
spillways and PK weirs which took place in Liège, Belgium.

REGIONAL MAP: Hydro & Dams in Europe 2011
Hydropower & Dams will be publishing the next in its series
of Regional Maps, to accompany the special issue for the
ICOLD Annual Meeting in Lucerne.
10,000 copies of the Map will be printed. They will be
distributed to all delegates at the ICOLD Meeting, as well as
to H&D readers worldwide, and delegates attending other
major events later this year, such as HYDRO 2011 in Prague,
Czech Republic and Green Power VI in India.
The locations of major dams, hydro stations and pumpedstorage
plants will be shown. Criteria for inclusion will be:
In operation: dams ≥ 100 m high, or volume of ≥ 20 × 10 6 m 3 ;
powerplants ≥ 100 MW;
Under construction/planned: dams ≥ 60 m, or volume of
≥ 20 × 10 6 m 3 ; hydro and pumped-storage plants ≥ 50 MW
A Table of data will accompany the Map, giving technical
data for the projects shown (dam height, type and purpose;
hydro plant capacity if applicable; completion date or
current status)
Our regional Maps are displayed prominently on the walls
of hydropower and water utilities worldwide. Sponsorship

Sponsors of the Map are entitled to a full-page advertisement
in the special ICOLD Issue of Hydropower & Dams, which
will be distributed to all Annual Meeting participants.

A limited number of major international companies active in the
hydro/dam engineering profession have the opportunity to co-sponsor
the Map.
Co-sponsorship involves booking a box (77 mm wide x 60 mm high) in
which the company name and colour logo will appear prominently, along
with full contact details and a short description (up to 30 words) of the
company’s scope of services. Text will be printed in black in a white
box, to ensure a consistent style, in fairness to all companies, and also
to ensure that the colour logo has maximum prominence on the Map.
Please note that we will not accept photos or images within the design.
As part of the Map sponsorship package, companies are entitled
to a full-page colour advertisement in the special ICOLD issue of H&D
(No. 3, 2011), in addition to the box on the Map. Sponsors also receive
100 complimentary copies of the Map, which can be used for personal
circulation to key clients, or for other promotional purposes.
Some boxes on the Map have already been sold or reserved,
(the picture below shows the position in early March); so, to guarantee

overleaf. The price to co-sponsor the Map is UK£ 3800 / EU 4800 /
US$ 6200 and includes a full-page colour advertisement in Issue No. 3
