It will be accompanied by a Map<br />

Special issue of <strong>Hydropower</strong> & <strong>Dams</strong><br />
ICOLD 2011 will be the most significant event of<br />
the year for the internati<strong>on</strong>al dam engineering<br />
professi<strong>on</strong>; about 700 delegates are expected to<br />
attend. In accordance with usual traditi<strong>on</strong>,<br />
the editorial team of <strong>Hydropower</strong> & <strong>Dams</strong> is<br />
working closely with the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Committee of the<br />
host country, Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, to prepare a major<br />
special issue of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Journal</str<strong>on</strong>g> to commemorate the<br />
meeting in Lucerne.<br />
Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>on</strong>e of Europe’s pi<strong>on</strong>eering countries<br />
for hydropower development at the time of its<br />
industrial development, is today renowned for its<br />
major c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> of dam engineering expertise.<br />
A ‘new wave’ of pumped-storage development is<br />
also under way, with projects like Nant de Drance<br />
<strong>and</strong> Linth Limmern under c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
A wealth of informati<strong>on</strong> of interest for the dam<br />
engineering professi<strong>on</strong> worldwide is currently<br />
being prepared for the special issue of<br />
<strong>Hydropower</strong> & <strong>Dams</strong>, by experts from Switzerl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
<strong>and</strong> from some neighbouring countries.<br />

Complimentary copies of the special issue will be<br />
distributed to all delegates attending the Lucerne<br />
Meeting, as well as to our internati<strong>on</strong>al readership<br />
worldwide. This issue of H&D thus represents <strong>on</strong>e<br />

Special ICOLD issue of<br />
<strong>Hydropower</strong> & <strong>Dams</strong><br />
79 th Annual<br />
Meeting of ICOLD<br />
Representatives of ICOLD’s 93 Member Countries will assemble<br />
for six days of high level discussi<strong>on</strong>s at the Annual Meeting in<br />
Lucerne. This will be <strong>on</strong>e of the main highlights of the year for the<br />
internati<strong>on</strong>al dam engineering professi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Meetings of the Technical Committees will focus <strong>on</strong> the<br />
preparati<strong>on</strong> of reports <strong>and</strong> bulletins which will advance the stateof-the-art<br />
of dam engineering, <strong>and</strong> related topics such as finance,<br />
ec<strong>on</strong>omics, envir<strong>on</strong>mental aspects, <strong>and</strong> impacts of climate change.<br />
‘<strong>Dams</strong> <strong>and</strong> Reservoirs under Changing C<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s’ will be the<br />
subject of a <strong>on</strong>e-day Symposium <strong>on</strong> 1 June. Four technical<br />
excursi<strong>on</strong>s are offered <strong>on</strong> 2 June, <strong>and</strong> <strong>on</strong> 3 June the 79th<br />
Executive Meeting will review the Commissi<strong>on</strong>’s current <strong>and</strong><br />
future strategy <strong>and</strong> activities.<br />
An Exhibiti<strong>on</strong> will take place c<strong>on</strong>currently with the meetings.<br />
Pre- <strong>and</strong> post-meeting study tours will give delegates the<br />
opportunity to visit major dams <strong>and</strong> hydro/pumped-storage plants<br />
in western, southern or eastern Switzerl<strong>and</strong>.<br />
Our special issue of H&D will be distributed to all participants.<br />
A major focus of our special issue will be dam engineering<br />
expertise, <strong>and</strong> current hydropower <strong>and</strong> dam developments in<br />
Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, as host country of the ICOLD Annual Meeting.<br />
T<str<strong>on</strong>g>here</str<strong>on</strong>g> will also be papers from experts in neighbouring countries,<br />
<strong>on</strong> topics of special relevance to ICOLD delegates.<br />

• Swiss research <strong>on</strong> sedimentati<strong>on</strong> management<br />
• New sediment discharge gallery at the Solis dam<br />
Refurbishment <strong>and</strong> upgrading<br />
• Update <strong>on</strong> various projects w<str<strong>on</strong>g>here</str<strong>on</strong>g> dams are being heightened or<br />
strengthened, such as Göschneralp, Serra, Les Toules, Spitallam<br />
<strong>and</strong> Seeuferegg<br />
Pumped storage<br />
• Updates <strong>on</strong> the H<strong>on</strong>grin-Léman capacity increase; status reports<br />
<strong>on</strong> Nant de Drance <strong>and</strong> Linth Limmern, <strong>and</strong> plans for the Lago<br />
Bianco scheme<br />
Materials for dams<br />
• Asphalt c<strong>on</strong>crete lining for a snow producti<strong>on</strong> reservoir<br />
• The use of geomembranes at some European dams<br />
The pan-European secti<strong>on</strong> of the special issue will include<br />
articles from leading European manufacturers <strong>on</strong>: Pelt<strong>on</strong> turbine<br />
technology; French research <strong>on</strong> the piping flow erosi<strong>on</strong> process<br />
in hydraulic structures; <strong>and</strong>, reports from a recent dam safety<br />
c<strong>on</strong>ference in Lisb<strong>on</strong>, Portugal, <strong>and</strong> a workshop <strong>on</strong> labyrinth<br />
spillways <strong>and</strong> PK weirs which took place in Liège, Belgium.
REGIONAL MAP: Hydro & <strong>Dams</strong> in Europe 2011<br />
<strong>Hydropower</strong> & <strong>Dams</strong> will be publishing the next in its series<br />
of Regi<strong>on</strong>al Maps, to accompany the special issue for the<br />
ICOLD Annual Meeting in Lucerne.<br />
10,000 copies of the Map will be printed. They will be<br />
distributed to all delegates at the ICOLD Meeting, as well as<br />
to H&D readers worldwide, <strong>and</strong> delegates attending other<br />
major events later this year, such as HYDRO 2011 in Prague,<br />
Czech Republic <strong>and</strong> Green Power VI in India.<br />
The locati<strong>on</strong>s of major dams, hydro stati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> pumpedstorage<br />
plants will be shown. Criteria for inclusi<strong>on</strong> will be:<br />
In operati<strong>on</strong>: dams ≥ 100 m high, or volume of ≥ 20 × 10 6 m 3 ;<br />
powerplants ≥ 100 MW;<br />
Under c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>/planned: dams ≥ 60 m, or volume of<br />
≥ 20 × 10 6 m 3 ; hydro <strong>and</strong> pumped-storage plants ≥ 50 MW<br />
A Table of data will accompany the Map, giving technical<br />
data for the projects shown (dam height, type <strong>and</strong> purpose;<br />
hydro plant capacity if applicable; completi<strong>on</strong> date or<br />
current status)<br />
