Reflections from
Your president
Steve Kurzman
IAs I started to write this article
I received a phone call from a
good friend who wanted to tell
me about a wonderful restaurant
which he and his wife had dined at
the night before. He characterized
the experience as probably “the best
meal he had ever had in his life”. He
asked to see the chef and told him
that his skills were unbelievable. He
thought that the wait staff could not
have been more efficient or friendly.
The menu was “unbelievable” in its
variety and sophistication; the
decor impeccable. In fact,
on the way out they actually
made reservations for
the following week.
He finished by telling
me that I had to try it!
After the conversation I thought
about our recent High Holiday
services. Many people told me that
the services and their experience was
the best in years. Rabbi Gordon
was applauded for his excellence in
conducting the service and for his
sermons and teachings which were
described as deep and meaningful.
continued on page 4
Oh dreidel,
dreidel, dreidel
Welcome back everyone and Happy
Chanukah! Fall at CMT was both
enriching and invigorating, from
the High Holidays to the Tichnor
Memorial Symposium to dinners in
the sukkah to celebrations honoring
Joe Miller and Steve Handler. The
next three months is filled with new
services and programs, including the
Brotherhood/Sisterhood Menorah
Fest, Jews in Sports, A Taste of
Mussar and special Family Shabbat
Services. We’re also including a new
column called “CMT’ers Reaching
Out” – Please send us summaries
of your good deeds for the next
newsletter. Take a look inside – mark
your calendars – and join us for all!
And before you know it – we’ll be
Reflections from your President
Steve Kurzman
Others raved that Rabbi Plumb’s teaching was warm
and spiritual. Many commented about how smoothly
the ushers had functioned in moving people to and
from the Bimah. I actually received emails complementing
how wonderful the building looked - sparkling
and inviting. Some were kind enough to mention
how handsome the president was (OK, I made that
up). All in all, the congregants who spoke to me had
a wonderful experience and I greatly appreciated the
feedback. So, I had to wonder why no one told me
that they were going to tell all their friends and that
they would be coming to services next Shabbat. Why
are we so eager to tell everyone about an experience
which fills our stomachs but do not spread the word
about an experience which fills our souls? Let me ask
you, did you tell any of your friends or family about
the wonderful experience which you had during Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur? Did you consider coming
back the following Shabbat, or for Sukkot, or to the
minyan one morning or evening? Let me assure you
that the conduct and tenor of the High Holiday service
is not a singular unique occurrence. All of the services
which our Rabbis lead are excellent. Our facilities are
warm and inviting all year long. So I challenge you -
invite one friend to accompany you to Mishkan Tefila
next Shabbat. Come to minyan one morning or evening
next week. Do not miss the joy and spirituality which
you experienced at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for
an entire year until next year’s High Holidays -- share it,
capture it, revel in it all year long.
Shabbat Service and a Musical Friday night service
will be offered by Rabbis Audrey Berkman and Jethro
Berkman, followed by an Oneg Shabbat. On February
18, 2013, Dena and Michael Rashes will be hosting our
annual Snowbirds Luncheon – please join us if you are
in south Florida then! On Saturday evening February
23, 2013, everyone is welcome to the Purim Megillah
reading - always a fun family event (be sure to wear
your costume).
I want to thank everyone who has already given to
the Annual Appeal. The initial response was unprecedented
- at the conclusion of Yom Kippur we had
pledges for more than 50% of our goal from 20% of
the Congregation. Larry Fischer and his crew have been
“working the phones” to raise that number even further.
If they have not yet reached out to you, do not fear --
they will --and when they do, please be generous.
With warm wishes for 2013,
You also can enjoy many varied events over the next
few months – to begin with, on December 11, 2012,
the Brotherhood and Sisterhood are co-sponsoring
Menorah Fest, featuring a klezmer band. On January
11, 2013, there are two great programs: beginning
at 6:15PM Rabbi Plumb will lead a Family Kabbalat
A Taste of Mussar
Rabbi Marcia Plumb
I am delighted to introduce myself to you as the new
Associate Rabbi at CMT. I will be working with
Wendy Handler to help create family services, and with
our nursery and religious schools, as well as with Rabbi
Gordon and the rest of the professional staff in teaching
and leading services. I look forward to meeting you.
One of my passions is Mussar literature. I know Rabbi
Gordon has taught Mussar here at CMT, and I am
pleased to continue this area of study for the congregation.
Mussar is a genre of Jewish literature that
was written from the 11th century onwards. The first
Mussar book was written by Bahya ibn Pakuda in
Spain. Pakuda, who was an observant Jew, saw his
Jewish compatriots focussing a great deal on fulfilling
mitzvot, but very little on treating others with kindness.
He also noticed that many observant Jews at the time
were keeping the commandments but with little interest
or motivation. Pakuda realised that something was
missing from Jewish life -- the intention behind the
actions. He wrote a book called Duties of the Heart
(Hovot ha Levavot). The book instructed people to
focus on our hearts and our behaviour when we lived
our daily lives.
In the 18th century, Rabbi Israel Salanter in Lithuania,
created a Mussar yeshiva and spread the word about
Mussar. Mussar is still being written today. It is still a
school of thought which teaches that Jews must be as
concerned with the inner life as well as the outer life;
as much with our soul as with mitzvot (commandments).
Mussar instructs us to work on our personality
traits so that we can be the best human beings possible,
and cultivate our souls so that we are always in balance
emotionally and spiritually. According to Mussar, we
become close to God when we feel whole, and behave
in the best way possible.
In order to create a life in
which we feel balanced,
measured, calm and joyful,
Mussar gives us texts to study
and spiritual practices to
follow. For example, we might wish to be more content
with our lives. Mussar would suggest that we work on
cultivating gratitude. We would study texts from Bible,
Talmud, and Mussar about gratitude, and we would be
asked to list 5 things we were grateful for every day. We
would practice being grateful. Eventually, according to
Mussar, we would begin to see the world and our lives
with appreciation rather than discontent. Mussar is
meant to transform the way we see ourselves, others and
the world at large.
Member Spotlight:
CMT PRESIDENT STEPHEN KURZMAN
It is four months into his Presidency, and President
Steve Kurzman finds his job even more enjoyable
and challenging than expected. Steve’s wanted to
be President because he knew it was the right thing to
do and was confident that, with support from staff and
congregants, he could succeed in this job. According to
Steve, there are two skills necessary to succeed and have
fun with a responsibility like this: being organized and
being able to delegate. Steve, you’re looking great so far!
Steve grew up in Brookline, started his undergraduate
studies at University of Michigan and graduated
from Northeastern University. He received a Masters
Degree in Taxation from Bentley University. Steve is
a partner in the accounting firm, Kurzman, Dempsey
and Kowalker, which he started in 1976. Steve spends
most of his professional time in the tax area particularly
with estates and trusts. Since 1977, Steve has served as
an Adjunct Professor at Bentley University, teaching a
graduate course in the Law Department entitled “The
Income Taxation of Estates, Trusts and Beneficiaries”.
He gets a great deal of pleasure teaching these graduate
students as it allows him to interact with bright, young
professionals who offer different insights and perspectives
from the people he deals with in his daily work.
Steve’s teaching experiences have allowed him to learn,
teach and laugh with his students, all at the same time.
In the limited spare time that he has, Steve enjoys
reading, particularly history, walking and spending time
with his grandson Finnley.
Steve and wife Marilyn have been members of CMT for
29 years, and celebrated both of their children’s b’nei
mitzvoth here. Steve has filled many roles at CMT:
Brotherhood President, Forum co-President, PTO
Treasurer, and Chairman of the Finance Committee for
10 years. He has been on the Cemetery Committee,
Endowment
Committee,
Strategic Planning
Committee and
even co-produced
five plays at CMT,
most recently the
smash hit Guys
and Dolls!
Steve feels that
CMT’s greatest
strength is our
Stephen Kurzman
people – staff
and members
alike – and he never ceases to be impressed by their
intelligence and commitment, which have directly led
to our success. He is excited to work with our great
staff, and appreciates both the pleasant and professional
atmosphere in our office, as well as the strong,
cordial relationships between our clergy. Having just
completed one cycle of the high holidays, witnessing
the enormous time, effort and hard work that is
required, Steve has found an even greater respect for our
entire staff.
Steve’s goals for Mishkan Tefila include greater
congregant attendance and participation at Shabbat
and at minyan, a strong commitment to a Shul-based
Hebrew School, and expanded partnerships with other
Jewish organizations and synagogues in programming
and religious services. All of us wish Steve well in his
Presidency and thank Marilyn, son David, daughter
Jessica, daughter-in-law Stacie, and especially Finnley
for sharing Steve with us for the next three years. We
look forward to working with him and know that he
will see great progress. See you in Shul, Steve!
Religious School Highlights
Chanukah is almost here, but it seems like only
yesterday that we were enjoying our Back to
School luncheon!
The students have come so far and learned
so much. We have had so much to celebrate
from birthdays, to meals in the sukkah, to
praying and singing together in the chapelall
this as we build up our Hebrew School
community and look for opportunities to
come together. We’ve been learning how
to express joy by showing our gratitude to
God through our music and tefila (prayer)
program. If you haven’t stopped by for
havdalla on a Sunday morning or services
Tuesday afternoon, please feel free to do so.
Our Tuesday afternoon service is modeled
after the Saturday morning one so that
kids will feel comfortable when they come
on Shabbat. Speaking of Shabbat, please
join us for the many family services we
have and help your children fulfill their
Shabbat attendance requirement. There are
weekly Tot Shabbat services from 10-11:15
in the Nursery School, Family Kabbalat
Shabbats (Friday evenings) with an oneg/
dinner on 12/4, 1/11, 2/8, 3/8 and 4/15. We
also have family-friendly Shabbat morning
and birthday celebrations on 1/26, 3/2, and
4/20. If you or your post-bar or bat mitzvah
age child would like to read all or part of
the Torah or Haftarah portion please be in
touch with Dr. Wolok. Parents, students
and friends are welcome to share readings.
There are prizes being offered this year to
the students who do the most readings this
year! There is something for every age, level of
involvement, and ability.
At this time of year when the hours of daylight are so
short, we look forward to the brightness of Chanukah.
This holiday is all about increasing the lightboth
actually and metaphorically. In fact
when determining how best to celebrate the
holiday many years ago, the Rabbis had a
discussion as to whether it would be best
to begin with eight lights and count down
to just one, or to begin with one light and
add another each night. The
latter was agreed upon because
as the light should grow,
“holiness is something that must
grow, not become smaller”.
We all want to welcome the fifth
graders from Temple Emeth who
have joined our Hebrew School.
We know they will be a great
addition to our student body and
are so happy to have their families
as part of our school community.
In addition to thanking our
families for all their support, a
big todah rabah to Jessica Freier
who, on behalf of our PTO, comes every
Tuesday to sell healthy snacks to our
Hebrew School students.
Finally, I would like to thank our teacher’s
aides: Bella, Emma, Kayla, Lexi, Mariana,
Michaela, Nicole, Rebecca, Sara, Tal, Tristan
and Zoe. All of you are such a great helpyou
bring so much love and fun to our
school!!
All the best,
Where to Find It In The
Feinberg Library
The Feinberg Library is open when the
synagogue is open, and we encourage
members to come in any time to browse
and check out materials. (Checkout forms
are on the desk.) The Library provides all
congregants with a wide variety of Judaic
materials, popular Jewish authors, recent
best sellers, and a large collection of young
adult and children’s books.
The Library is easy to navigate, with signs
to help you in your search . Recent books
and Book Club selections are in the New
Books section to the left of the front door.
Fiction and biography are on the righthand
wall. To your left is non-fiction.
Shelves are marked with signs showing
subject categories. Inside the back door is
the children’s corner. On the left are books
for older children and young adults.
notebook with listings by call number
and title, is opposite the librarian’s desk.
Please note: Titles starting with “A” and
“The” are listed under those words.
Still can’t find it? Look in our special
display bookcases for books on Israeli
Culture and Jews in Sports, and the
CMT’ers Reaching Out
Last Fall, I saw a notice in the CMT order of service requesting volunteers for Families Connecting with Families
International Conference, co-sponsored by NAPVI Jewish Guild for the Blind at the Perkins School. This conference
was designed to meet many goals to enhance and support the growth and lifelong skills needed by youth who are
visually impaired. It covers all aspects of raising and educating a child with visual impairment. I signed up to help and
it turned out to be an amazing memorable and emotional experience.
My job was to help with the barbeque. On the day of the conference, unfortunately, it started to rain. Volunteers had
to carry all the supplies inside, and set up 25 tables to accommodate the 250 kids and parents. One of my tasks was to
hold 2 umbrellas and escort the families from the bus into the dining room. I met many wonderful families but one
that I became especially close to was the Kulh family from Charleston, West Virginia. The parents Sigal and Charles
have 3 boys: Liad, 13, Ben 11, and Ely 9. Liad is both deaf and legally blind.
Sigal is originally from Haifa and works as an Occupational Therapist in the school system and Charles is a pharmacy
manager. In February, their son Liad celebrated his Bar Mitzvah using sign language while his brothers acted as interpreters.
I really enjoyed meeting all the Kuhls so much and learning about them that I returned to the conference on
Sunday for the final program and drove the entire family to the Science Museum.
I am so glad that I had the opportunity to help others.
Our Fourth Annual Alan J. Tichnor
Memorial Symposium
On Thursday, October 11th, hundreds of people
attended the Alan J. Tichnor Memorial Symposium
and enjoyed an inspiring and lively panel presentation
on “Conservative Judaism: Directions for Today and
Tomorrow”. Chancellor Arnold Eisen of the Jewish
Theological Seminary first addressed our group, and
was followed by responses and vision statements from
Rabbi Steve Wernick, CEO of the United Synagogue
of Conservative Judaism and Rabbi Julie Schonfeld,
Executive Vice President of the Rabbinical Assembly.
Professor Jonathan Sarna from Brandeis University
provided the introduction and history of the conservative
movement and our congregation. He then
moderated a discussion and question and answer from
the audience, and participants then enjoyed a wonderful
dessert reception.
This program was funded by the Tichnor family to remember Alan’s
many years of philanthropy and leadership in the Jewish Community.
CMT appreciates the efforts of Sid & Nancy Lejfer, Program Chairs,
and the entire Tichnor family for putting this together.
News from CMT Nursery School
Dear friends,
As a preschool, we said shalom to the high holidays.
The highlight for us was a nursery school family “nosh
in the sukkah (LOBBY)”. Over 100 people attended
and a joyous time was had by all.
For the next several weeks, teachers and children alike,
brought nature into the classroom. The youngsters
used pine needles instead of paint brushes and printed
with gourds. We cut open pumpkins and “sold” the
seeds at the faux classroom fruit stands that were
equipped with orchard shopping bags, faux money
in the cash registers and real scales to weigh the
goods. Some teachers made pumpkin bread with the
preschoolers. Others cleaned and baked the seeds for
snack. Of course, the Pilgrims and Native Americans
were excited about sharing a feast together.
Our Brotherhood donated new tricycles to the nursery
school this year. The children have been enjoying those
since opening day and continue to do so. On school
days when it is wet and soggy, our
children go outside with rags and
towels to dry off the shiny new
bikes. They love taking care of their
new vehicles.
Come upstairs and visit us anytime.
We will always greet you with a
smile and may even ask you to read
us a story. We love having visitors!
I hope you enjoyed being with
family and friends at Thanksgiving.
CMT Teens participate in Gateways
Gateways is the organization that enables children
with a range of special needs to receive a quality
Jewish education with the intent and hope that these
children will become integrated members of the Jewish
community.
Mishkan Tefila teens have a long history of working as
teen aides in the Gateways Sunday morning Hebrew
School program. Carrying on this tradition is Polly
Lejfer, Brianna Gershkowitz and Jessica Handler.
youth group, teens learn about mitzvot, social action
and social skills. These peer relationships promote
friendship, responsibility and Jewish values. Kudos
to Jeremy Glickman, Brianna Gershkowitz, Lexi
Gershkowitz, Emma Kaitz and Sam Stein for their
participation in the Mitzvah Mensches program.
We are proud of our teens and their commitment to
mitzvot and Jewish values!
Gateways also organizes a youth group program called
Mitzvah Mensches. In this integrated, social action
Revitalized Youth Committee
Sharon Cohen, the newly appointed Youth
Committee Chair, has worked diligently to fill
this committee with a diverse group of committed
parents from the Hebrew School and from Day
Schools. Members include Diane Jaye, Laura Lerner,
David Ball, Lisa Liss and Jessica Freier, who is the
Vice President of Youth and Education. The first
meeting was held in November and a lively discussed
ensued. The second meeting is scheduled for late
March. Sharon can be reached at cohenmsj@comcast.
net and your feedback and comments are welcome.
Myra and Robert Kraft
Passport to Israel Program
The Myra and Robert Kraft Passport to Israel
program is a unique savings plan to help parents
send their children on a life-changing teen Israel
experience. The program is designed so that our
community, CMT and CJP, helps families make a
trip to Israel during the high school years a reality. It
is open to all CMT families with children in grades 3
through 7. CJP, together with CMT, will contribute
up to $1400 towards your child’s trip. And you can
even help sponsor another child’s trip by buying a
gift certificate for them!
Give your child a gift that lasts a lifetime – as one
recent teen traveler said: “In the United States, I
know I’m Jewish. But in Israel, I FEEL that I’m
Jewish”.
