Steve Kurzman 

In my first communication to the 

Mishkan Tefila community as 

your President, I thought that I 

would recall some of the highlights 

of my remarks from my installation 

and then tell you some of what steps 

forward we’ve taken since June 4, 

2012. 

“It is with a great deal of humility 

and awe that I stand before you this 

evening. My becoming President 

of Congregation Mishkan Tefila 

is an honor, a challenge and an 

opportunity. 

More than one person has asked 

me why I was willing to become 

President of Mishkan Tefila. I have 

spent my life and professional career 

demonstrating the importance of 

learning as a lifelong endeavor – and 

clearly being your president will 

be a learning experience for me. 

I know that the Clergy and Tony 

Daniels and his staff will continue 

to perform magnificently and I 

have no doubt that the multitude of 

my fellow lay leaders and all of our 

active congregants will contribute 

untold hours toward the success of 

the Congregation.

Meet the CMT 

Jewish Educators 

Rabbi Marcia Plumb, Associate Rabbi, came to CMT from London’s Akiva 

School and Sha’arei Tsedek Synagogue. For 15 years, she served as the Director 

of Spiritual Formation at the Leo Baeck College, a rabbinic seminary in London, 

and prior to that, served as the Rabbi at the North London Progressive Synagogue 

and Congregation Beth Shalom in Connecticut. Hoping to lead others on a 

path towards spiritual enlightenment, Rabbi Plumb founded Neshama: For 

Spiritual Wellbeing, a center for spiritual reflection, meditation and the study of 

Mussar literature. Rabbi Plumb has recently moved to the Boston area, with her 

husband, Rabbi Dr. Michael Shire, and their two children, Anya and Micah. 

Rabbi Plumb will lead monthly Friday night and Saturday morning family 

services. She will also teach adult education courses, and lead occasional Nursery 

School Havdalah and Shabbat services. Rabbi Plumb’s vibrancy is the perfect 

match for Rabbi Gordon’s verve and we look forward to sharing Shabbat, holidays 

and classes with her. 

Wendy Handler, Director of Youth and Family Programs, is a longtime CMT 

member and has made a career out of touching lives, within our congregation and 

elsewhere. Wendy previously served as our Me’ah Coordinator, Family Educator 

and Youth Director, and currently volunteers on our Family Table Committee. 

Prior to Mishkan, Wendy was involved in Jewish academic outreach at Boston 

University Hillel. 

CMT has played an important role in Wendy’s life over the past 20 years; her 

children Michael, Jessie and Kayla are all graduates of our Nursery School. 

Michael and Jessie celebrated their bnei mitzvah at CMT, and Kayla will be 

celebrating hers shortly. Wendy is delighted to welcome back her husband, Steve, 

who just completed his term as a CMT Vice-President. She is looking forward 

to developing and managing all youth and family education programs, family 

services, and Bnei Mitzvah program – and contributing further to our vibrant and 

vital community. 

Erin Gubert, Religious School Director, is a much-loved and respected religious 

school teacher. Erin has been with Mishkan Tefila for six years in both the 

Nursery School and Religious School. She was the head teacher of the opening 

team at Gan Shelanu, the preschool at Solomon Schechter of Greater Boston, 

and spent many years leading junior congregation both in Newton and in Staten 

Island, NY. Erin is an alumna of Brandeis University, holds a Certificate in 

Early Childhood Jewish Education from Hebrew College, and is completing a 

M.A. in that field. 

Erin has three children: Daniel, Tristan and Mariana, all of whom attended 

Religious School at Mishkan Tefila. She loves giving children the opportunity 

to explore both their world and their Jewishness through fun, humor, joyful 

conversation and experiences.

PREPARING FOR THE HIGH 

HOLIDAYS, 5773

is right. None 

of us expects 

the single day of Yom 

Kippur to make us feel at 

one with ourselves, our 

families, our communities, 

or our God. By anticipating 

Yom Kippur months 

in advance and spreading 

the work of Yom Kippur 

over the face of the year, 

Amichai invites us to share his understanding that sins 

as ripe as grapes are not atoned for in a single day. But 

this work of anticipation fills the poet with a holy dread 

and he wants to be forgiven already, assured somehow 

that he will make it to Yom Kippur. 

This poem resonates with me. For me, too, holy 

dread sets in approximately three months before 

Rosh Hashanah. You may be reading these words in 

September, but I sit here writing them in July, feeling 

summer’s joys as I am already aware of summer’s 

inevitable surrender to fall. 

This year, I am not alone in anticipating the holidays. 

Preparing for the High Holidays is a professional/ 

volunteer partnership and you will be hearing many 

new voices this year at our services. Along with Cantor 

Finklestein, our organist Jonathan Barnhart, and the 

Choir, Dr. Wolok and myself, we will be joined by our 

new Associate Rabbi, Marcia Plumb. Rabbi Plumb will 

lead some of our services and deliver the main sermon 

on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. 

A Song of Yom Kippur

Forgive me now already, three months 

Before the Awesome days of forgiveness 

I fear I shall not get there. 

I spread out Yom Kippur over the face 

of the whole year. 

Grapes take a season to ripen. 

So how can sins and their 

atonement ripen in one day? 

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, we will again be 

joined by Israel’s council general in New England, Shai 

Bazak, to offer words of greeting and his own personal 

New Year message. Torah reading this year will be a 

shared responsibility, and we will hear from teens and 

adults who have learned the unique trop for these 

special days. The Haftorah readings will be chanted by 

Ronya Gordon, Judy Szathmary, Leo Karas and Walter 

Einstein. 

The opportunity to introduce our torah and haftorah 

readings will also be shared. Among those who have 

taken on this challenge are Miriam Druckman, Dan 

Kimmel, Lisa and David Rubinstein, Becca Heyman 

and one of our bnai mitzvah for the coming year, 

Andrew Steinberg. 

Joining the Cantor to lead parts of the davening will be 

Mack Rosenbaum, Jacob Starr and Becca Heyman.

CONGREGATION MISHKAN TEFILA September - November 2012

On Kol Nidre night, we will have a talk by our new 

President, Steve Kurzman on the state of the congregation 

at the New Year, and the next morning, Laurie 

Gerskowitz will speak about our programming for 

the coming year. During the holidays, we will also be 

sharing our program brochure with upcoming dates for 

classes and special events. 

Finally, throughout the services we will invite members 

of the congregation to join us on the bimah to lead 

English readings and introduce us to some of the special 

commentaries included in Mahzor Lev Shalem (our 

new High Holiday prayer book). 

Other highlights of the service will include a special 

New Year’s prayer for healing on the first day of Rosh 

Hashanah and the moment at the end of Yom Kippur 

when everyone is invited to step up to the bimah with 

family members or friends or alone, to share a quiet 

moment at the open ark. Jimmy Kurland will once 

again be blowing shofar on both Rosh Hashanah and to 

signal the end of the fast on Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur 

will end with a procession of our young people and a 

candle lit havdalah service. 

I look forward to seeing many of you at our programs 

that introduce the High Holidays, at services, and at 

adult education during the weeks to come. Lori, Ronya 

and Samara join me in wishing you all, and all of us 

collectively, a 5773 filled with accomplishment and 

blessing, health and peace, for us, for the State of Israel 

and for our World.

I have no illusions about the amount of time and effort 

which I will happily and proudly contribute. I will 

be available to our members and know with absolute 

certainty that they will call upon me. I shall listen to 

them with respect and interest and I shall try to the best 

of my ability to address their concerns. For some that 

alone might solve the problem for others it will not, but 

I will acknowledge you and I will endeavor to create an 

outcome which is satisfactory. 

I honestly believe that this moment in time is the most 

opportune that our Congregation has had to continue 

its march into the 21st century. This Congregation did 

not survive its first 154 years without changing. Last 

year I attended a conference on the management at 

which one of the speakers said: “You do not have to 

change – failure is always an option.” It is not an option 

for our temple and it is not an option for me! We must 

be a Congregation which is inclusive not exclusive; a 

Congregation which is warm and welcoming, not cold 

and stand offish. A Congregation which acknowledges 

the realities of the world in which we live; that not 

all families are mom, dad and the kids; that not all 

families are comprised of two Jewish spouses; that for 

some there is only one parent; that not all Conservative 

Jewish families practice their Judaism in the same way 

– but they all want to be part of a temple which accepts 

them and accepts them ungrudgingly. We know what 

worked 50 or 60 years ago and we know that much of 

that does not work today; so our success will depend 

entirely on our ability to retain that which still works 

and add to it that which people want in order to create 

21st century Conservative Judaism and that will only 

happen if we make our goal to be as much as we can be 

to as many as we can. We cannot succeed if we try to 

be everything to everybody, but we can be more than 

we are to more than we have. That is my challenge and 

with the guidance and vision of Rabbi Gordon, the 

support of our membership and the hard work and 

efforts of all of us I believe that it can be accomplished.” 

So, now, what has been accomplished since I delivered 

those remarks? 

First, and of this I am extremely proud, we have made 

a total commitment to education. By engaging Erin 

Gubert as our Religious School Director and Wendy 

Handler as Director of Youth and Family Programs, we 

have added to our staff two women with outstanding 

credentials, abilities and a history of success as educators 

at CMT. In addition, Rabbi Marcia Plumb will be 

devoting her extensive experience in religious education 

to our school programing. Rabbi Gordon will be 

directly supervising our Religious School staff. When 

our Hebrew School starts on September 9, our students 

will be welcomed and should be ready for an exciting 

and enriching year. 

Adding this talent and commitment to our already 

successful Nursery School under the direction of 

Lisa Kideckel, as well as the continuing adult course 

offerings of Dr. Davin Wolok and Rabbi Gordon, will 

ensure that we offer superior religious education for 

those from age 1 year and 9 months to 100 years. 

Second, it is my pleasure to announce that, through the 

largess of the Robert Boyer Scholarship Fund, we will 

be offering both new and continuing families a 50% 

reduction in Hebrew School tuition. 

Third, as I hope many of you have noticed, we have 

created unique approaches for publicizing our changes. 

Not only do we have vibrant people in place but we are 

using vibrant colors in our advertisements. Our ads also 

offer links to our website and online payment options 

and for the first time we will be using both online

and newspaper placements – as a leading 21st century 

Congregation should. This is but our first step to reach 

out to the Jewish community and I believe that it is the 

most important place to start. 

I look forward to reporting to you again soon of further 

progress in our educational and programming efforts. 

In the meantime, I look forward to greeting you on the 

High Holidays and wish you all Gemar Hatimah Tovah 

for the New Year from myself and the entire Kurzman 

family.

Tashlich is a short service 

where we throw bread into 

the water to symbolically 

represent the “casting off” 

of our sins. Bring your 

children for a family-friendly Tashlich service 

on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Monday, 

September 17th. Meet at CMT at 5pm or at

MOTHER’S SISTERHOOD 

As Co-Presidents of Sisterhood, we feel there is no 

better way to connect with fabulous women than 

joining the Sisterhood at Mishkan Tefila. Last year we 

tasted wine together, cruised down the Charles River, 

painted masterpieces and honored one of our own, 

along with supporting the Congregation in many ways. 

This year promises to be even better! Starting in 

October, we’ll challenge you at a Mah Jong tournament 

and then delight you in December at Menorahfest. 

January will be both tasty and inspiring, with an Iron 

Chef event with our Brotherhood friends and then our 

Tu B’shvat program “Figs, Faith and Fashion” that we 

share with Hadassah and Temple Emanuel Sisterhood. 

Springtime will bring 

a festive Purim Ball 

and a fun-filled trip 

to see The Book of 

Mormon, and our year will culminate with our Spring 

Celebration in May. 

We look forward to seeing old friends and welcoming 

new ones at all of our programs. Please join us for our 

first meet and greet on September 23rd at 10:30 in the

SHABBAT FOR FAMILIES 

Join your CMT friends for a family-friendly Shabbat experience. 

Meet in the Library from 10am - 11:15am on the following 

Shabbat mornings: November 3rd; January 26th; March 2nd and 

April 20th. Rabbi Plumb will lead services – we’ll sing, dance, tell 

stories and lots more! And birthdays will definitely be celebrated! 

All participants are invited to join the main service, for the 

conclusion of our Shabbat service, and then everyone is 

invited to a festive Kiddush. For more information, contact

Children and their parents are invited to a 

series of Family Kabbalat Shabbat services 

led by Rabbi Marcia. These services will take 

place at 6pm in the library on the following 

Friday evenings.....November 16th, December 

14th, January 11th, February 8th, March 8th 

and April 5th. Younger children can arrive at 

5:40pm for a pre-service snack. Experience

YOUTH NEWS 

CMT has four different youth groups to allow our 

children to get involved in social, community service 

and religious activities. Our youngest children, in grades 

2 and 3, are part of the pre-USY youth group called 

Hanoar (loosely translated as ‘the youth’). Children 

in grades 4 and 5 are part of the Kadima group; preteens 

in grades 6, 7 and 8 are Jr. USYers and teens in 

grades 9 – 12 are Sr. USYers. This year’s calendar will 

include chapter programs, programs with children 

from neighboring conservative synagogues and regional 

events. We will keep you posted on upcoming events! 

In terms of community service, CMT kids will work 

this year to combat hunger…..and they will make a 

real difference! Our theme will be HUNGER IS NO 

GAME and there are several ways that our children will 

participate: 

• CMT Sr. USYers will lead the way with a new 

initiative for Family Table called Teens Deliver. 

Family Table co-chairs will stock our food 

pantry and Mishkan Tefila teens will pack our 

boxes of cereal and cans of soup and deliver 

these items to the food pantry once Sunday 

each month. 

• CMT teens and pre-teens will also be 

encouraged to take a food stamp challenge. 

They will participate in a program that helps 

them to understand what it’s like to purchase 

food on a food stamp program and to have 

limited means and choices. 

• Our younger children will participate in an 

“empty bowls banquet” where we will create 

and design bowls and then donate the utensils 

and foods to fill them to families in need. 

• Our children’s community service activities 

will culminate in early May as they take part in 

Boston’s Walk for Hunger.

We are looking forward to a year filled with learning 

and fun for both students and teachers. All that we 

teach and study this year will be infused with Jewish 

values and derekh eretz: behavior built on the fact that 

each person is created in God’s image. 

This year, we will be piloting a program where students 

from the area’s day schools join us on Sunday mornings 

to assist in our classes. This will be a wonderful 

opportunity to learn together and make new friends. 

We’re also looking for some of our own CMT Religious 

School graduates to join us on Tuesday afternoons as 

teachers’ aides. If you happen to know an interested 

student in 5th grade or older, please send him or her my 

way! 

and learn with other teens. Through Mitzvah Menshes, 

kids learn about mitzvot and social action while 

practicing their social skills.

Teachers will be continuing their professional 

development through our partnership with Gateways 

professionals who will be guiding them both in and 

out of the classroom in areas such as cooperative 

learning, curriculum mapping and sharing best practice. 

Classroom dynamics, mentoring, and lesson planning 

will be just a few of the topics that we study through 

our Gateways grant and CJP grant. On Wednesday 

afternoons, CMT hosts Mitzvah Mensches -- an 

integrated program where teens with special needs work

USY REGIONAL NEWS - Mazel Tov to Josh and Ben 

Freier on their attendance at USY Encampment, August 

20-26th at Camp Ramah in Palmer, MA. Josh and Ben 

spent the week at USY camp participating in outdoor 

activities, day trips, Shabbat experiences and leadership 

activities. 

Upcoming Regional Activities for Mishkan Tefila youth 

include the annual Jr. and Sr. USY Boat cruise (Sunday, 

September 23rd), Kadima-It’s 2Cool Event in Canton 

(Sunday, October 28th), Jr. and Sr. USY Turkey 

Dance (Wednesday, November 21st) and International 

Convention, (December 23rd - December 27th). 

International Convention is being held in Boston this 

year! If you’re here over break, consider being a host 

family - it’s a wonderful and enriching experience! For

HAZAK IS HERE FOR YOU! 

We have just completed our fifth year as a HAZAK 

Chapter of the United Synagogue of America, and have 

much about which to reflect and take pride. 

This past year, we experienced entertaining, stimulating, 

educational, social and spiritual programs. Over the 

summer, we enjoyed our “Wednesday Afternoon at 

the Movies” series, showing films with Jewish content. 

Our films included “A Matter of Size”; “The Imported 

Bridegroom”, “A Case for Israel” with a stimulating 

discussion led by Rob Feinberg, and more. 

Our program committee recently met and planned 

exciting programs going forward for the 2012--2013 

HAZAK year, the first of which will be on September 

23rd. On that day, Rabbi Gordon will lead a discussion 

“Reinventing The Synagogue: Mishkan Tefila, a Case 

Study”. 

At our next program on Sunday, November 11th, we 

will be showing the film Unmasked, Judeophobia, 

A Threat to Civilizations, hosted by producer Gloria 

Greenfield. Beyond that, we are looking forward to a 

year of entertaining and stimulating programming.

If you are you single and between 35 and 65, CMT 

invites you to help us become a local hub for singles 

programming. Starting this fall, we’ll have monthly 

gatherings both at the synagogue and at local venues. 

Our opening event will be on Thursday, Sept. 13th for 

an ice cream social and game night, followed by the 

first meeting of a bi-monthly book club on Thursday, 

October 11th. We’ll talk about our favorite authors and 

plan a great year-long series. 

And help us choose a place for dinner on Thursday, 

November 15th – but not too rich or fattening with 

Thanksgiving coming just a week later …! 

Spring will bring a variety of singles programs – from a 

cooking class, to Friday Night Live, the possibilities are

JEWS IN SPORTS PROGRAM 2012- 

2013...THE SERIES CONTINUES..... 

It’s Time for Football! Watch the Pats take on Miami on Sunday, 

December 2nd at 1:00pm. This is open to all CMT sports fans and their 

families. We’ll meet at a congregant’s home to cheer them on …. date and 

details to follow. 

As the weather changes, so do our sports! CMT students are going to a 

basketball game at Boston College; date and details to follow. 

Baseball’s coming…. Saturday, February 2nd in the evening, CMT 

families and friends will start with a Havdalah Service and then supper. 

Together we’ll watch the movie The Field of Dreams and then all look 

forward to Red Sox Opening Day in April 2013. 

CMT Library is getting into the action as well …. Watch for details on 

our One Synagogue-One Book program as we read and discuss The Art of 

Fielding by Chad Harbach. All congregants and friends are welcome. For

Spring will truly begin when CMT Brotherhood Softball team, former

2011 ANNUAL APPEAL 

Record setting, yes record setting is the only way in which 

to describe our 2011-2012 Annual Appeal. Over half of 

our members contributed almost $450,000 – the largest 

amount of dollars and the greatest percentage of participation ever! 

I want to thank all of those who contributed and I want to also 

thank those who worked so tirelessly to achieve this result. We 

are indebted to Rabbi Gordon, Chuck Diamond, Dena Rashes, 

Larry Fischer and Gary Miller and all of the other individuals 

who assisted, for their never-flagging energy and enthusiasm that 

allowed us to reach so many congregants and achieve this breathtaking 

result. I apologize to anyone who I failed to identify; this 

was a team effort and all of the team deserves credit. 

Your generosity allows us to continue to expand our programs for 

all CMT members while holding the line of dues and fees. I know 

that we are a unique Congregation in many ways, not the least of
