CINEMA
Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Architect: Hijman Louis
Lighting Designer: Grontmij TM
Tuschinski is a huge, Art Deco cinema palace conveniently located
between the Munt tower and the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. Built
by the immigrant from Poland Abraham Icek Tuschinski, the cinema
opened in 1921 and it remains until today with its Art Deco interior one
of the most cherished buildings in Amsterdam. Tuschinski has been
thoroughly modernized and is today one of the release cinemas in the
city.
During its 4 year restoration, the cinema was given an electrical
overhaul which included an iLight control system. There are 40.000
LED’s in the cinema controlled by 3 iLight SCD24 DMX controllers.
20.000 of which are white LED’s and the others are yellow.
Every light fitting has approx. 30 White LEDs and 30 Yellow LEDS.
The system allows control of the colours individually to create a range
of bright and warm light throughout.
With the use of iLight UIGs, the projector is linked directly to the
lighting control system allowing the control of the lights automatically
from the operation of the projector. The lights can also be manually
controlled by several push-button panels.
As well as the main theatre, iLight’s system was used to control all the
light fittings in the rest of the building, VIP room, dining room, entrance
area with its colour changing ceiling and the outdoor lighting.

Why the client chose iLight
This Art Deco cinema in the heart of
Amsterdam was subject to a 4 year
restoration. A sophisticated lighting control
system was needed to complement the
state of the art cinematic experience. The
main deciding factors for the client and
lighting designer were:
• Ability to of 3rd part equipment such as
projectors to control the lighting control
system
• Control of custom LED light fittings via DMX
• A DMX control units that ‘sit’ on the iCANnet
network enabling DMX to be integral to the
control system
• Design and manufacture of a bespoke wall
station for ease of scene selection
• Cost effective equipment and installation
